  • Dr. Ebraheim’s educational animated video describes Thoracic Disc Herniation.
    There are 12 vertebrae in the thoracic region. The spinal canal in the thoracic region is relatively small. The spinal cord could be easily compressed or injured in this area.
    Pain in the thoracic region can occur from:
    •Cardiovascular origin.
    •Pulmonary
    •Tumors
    •Infection
    •Compression fractures
    •Mediastinal structures.
    Point of consideration is thoracic disc herniation
    It occurs more in the lower thoracic region usually during the fifth decade of life.
    Pain radiates to the ribs and anteriorly at the same level.
    Disc herniation is uncommon and most are asymptomatic
    Radicular pain anteriorly towards the rib (nerve root irritation).
    Myelopathy can occur from spinal cord compression.
    The patient could have gait disturbance, leg weakness as well as bladder and bowel dysfunction.
    Myelopathic findings are usually subtle. Look for upper motor neuron signs such as hyperreflexia, clonus and Babinski.
    Diagnosis is usually by MRI. MRI will help in ruling out the presence of fractures, tumors or infections. Although MRI is the study of choice, it has a high false positive rate. Asymptomatic patients may show thoracic disc abnormality on their MRI.
    Conservative treatment includes:
    •NSAIDs
    •Physical therapy
    Surgery is indicated when the patient has pain that is not responding to conservative treatment for 6 months. Thoracic disc herniation with myelopathy.
    Most of the surgeries are done by anterior approach with or without fusion. Fusion is done for spine instability and for significant pain. Laminectomy is contraindicated.

    AhHA! I had acdf surgery a little over a year ago, and have been having problems again, with the addition of some pain and spasms that weren't there before when I was diagnosed with cervical myelopathy with radiculopathy (and polyneuropathy). One of the weirder and more painful things has been the pain/spasms that wrap from my spine to my ribs on my right side. We've never even done MRIs on anything but my head and neck. THANK YOU for pointing me in the right direction! Your videos are short, but very informative and concise. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!

    I’m having these symptoms pain in the back left side that radiates to the ribs. Sometimes the spot in the back will pop or crack and the pain goes away temporarily. Is there a way to fix it without surgery?

      @@BNFA187wooo hey I had MRI and barium swallow since, they’ve come to the conclusion that I need to strengthen my abdominal muscles since my back is overly developed and work out other muscle imbalances. Everyday Foam rolling, hangs from a pull-up bar, and this device called spine worx have been helping. Hope you can get some relief with what I recommended.

    I have a pain on my lateral side of my Thoracic spine. It's more near the spine than the shoulder blade. The pain radiates from a certain point in my back to the chest just behind my sternum. Is this a disc herniation? It goes away when I bend towards my left side (Where the pain originates). I just got it right after I was done using the restroom and I was pulling my pants up then all of a sudden the pain happened. Please I need help and I don't want to go visit a doctor yet. The pain is not that sever although it's annoying. Pain level: 5/10

      +Moka Bokal Me too, my life has been destroyed by a suck chiropractor. My T7-T10 got protrusion after his manipulation, and my legs are numbness and weak.
      Are you going to sue the chiropractor ?

    Hi!! I am a 30 year old female experiencing severe pain in my mid/ upper back. I woke up 1 week ago with this severe pain and after a chiropractor visit, 2 dr. Visits and an ER visit I finally had an MRI! The MRI showed herniated disc from T8 - T9 and Early DDD between T7 - T10. Did the DDD contribute to the herniation? I am very active and workout 5-6 days a week. I have been slightly lax on working out over the last month or two but normally workout regularly. I have not had an injury, I wasn't in an accident or hurt in any way. I literally woke up with the pain and it has been so severe that I am unable to work or move much at all without crying! I'm someone tha th never sits still so resting is killing me!! What should I do? Do i need surgery since i have DDD?!

      @brijeshrudani1764 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cassi Johnson . I also have herniation on T6 to T8. How you feeling now . DDD is very rare at thoracic level due to lack of movement

    • @natao89
      @natao89 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Cassi Johnson I feel sorry for you. I'm on a similar condition, but in my case the pain is tolerable (but even so disturbing). Did your disc herniation heal on its own or are you still suffering in pain? Or did you undergo surgery? There isn't much information about thoracic disc herniation out there so for me it would be useful to know how other people are dealing with this issue. I wish you all the best!
