    SpeechJammer is a system that can be used to disturb people's speech. In general, human speech is jammed by giving back to the speakers their own utterances at a delay of a few hundred milliseconds. This effect can disturb people without any physical discomfort, and disappears immediately by stop speaking. Furthermore, this effect does not involve anyone but the speaker. We utilize this phenomenon and implemented two prototype versions by combining a direction-sensitive microphone and a direction-sensitive speaker, enabling the speech of a specific person to be disturbed. See detail in our paper on the pre-print server: arxiv.org/abs/1202.6106

    It's not meant to stop you from hearing your own voice, it plays your voice back to you with a delay of several milliseconds which, believe it or not, makes it very difficult to speak.

    Taken from an article on NYTimes: « When you aim the SpeechJammer at someone, it records that person’s voice and plays it back to him with a delay of a few hundred milliseconds. This seems to gum up the brain’s cognitive processes - a phenomenon known as delayed auditory feedback - and can painlessly render the person unable to speak.»
    So while it might be deemed psychological, the effect seems pretty efficient.

    If you've ever called into a radio talk show that has voice delay and you left your radio playing where you can hear it while you talk on the phone, you probably have experienced this effect. I can testify that it is distracting, though with sufficient concentration, one can overcome it.

    They use directional speakers that transmit most if not all of the sound in the direction of the person the gun is pointed at. So probably those standing behind the person could hear it. Notice that the camera is always behind the gun so the directional speakers prevent it from picking up the sound.
    There is also the fact that it is the speaker's own voice that is amplified and fed back. So even if the sound reflects around the room to the camera it mixes with the original voice of the speaker.

    the principle is completely functional, its a forwards mic to pick up the voice of the target only, and a speaker to play it back, the timing is probably just a bit of wiring, you could make it quite easily i could think with the right knowledge,

    Radio call in shows tell the caller to turn down the radio in their home for the same reason. If you hear yourself delayed on the phone it stops you as well, used to have that at work from time to time. Most likely it will be used to silence someone making a public disruption before they can be humanely tazered, sprayed and wisked away.

    This video makes it seem like the device affects the brain and vocal box itself, when in reality all it does is replay the persons speaking BACK to the person, in an much louder audible fashion. Its no different from a megaphone at a protest shouting to the protestors. Except This megaphone is pointed at your face, and plays your own voice. It operates on ultrasonic levels so that the audio out of the speaker is like an arrow. Raytheon has a device that actually interupts your voice box.

    In the girl's case it appears that after the initial confusion (and those weird question marks that magically appear over her head and then vanish) her adaptive human brain kicks in and compensates for the unexplained audio anomaly and she continues to discuss what happened last week on Jersey Shores with renewed reckless vigor. Much to the dismay of her co-workers I'm sure. So by definition would it not be a disruptor as opposed to a jammer?

  • @twsafarn
    @twsafarn 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    well that's a pretty good explanation... but the cancelation of the frequency by inverted phase is just pretty impossible to do in a real enviroment (is like putting 2 amps facing each other with a mic conected to both trying to not hear anything)... But well... as andrew quoted "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"... let's see how true it is

  • @Spartan043
    @Spartan043 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @zezuntxiduntxi Yeah. My first thought was something along the lines of "vehicle-mounted, scaled-up variant used by police to silence protesters". When the device is used, you hear an echo of your own voice, delayed by a few hundred milliseconds. If you've ever used XBL voice chat and heard your own voice sent back through someone else's mic, you've been exposed to this effect.
    This thing is hella simple to build. You could construct one at home, using a parabolic speaker/mic and an Arduino.

  • @ericcsuf
