- Pro Mountain Bike racers & riders across all disciplines have top-end bikes, we all know that! However, nowadays you can buy some pretty incredible bikes just off the shelf, so whilst Rich Payne was out at the first round of the EWS in Tweed Valley Scotland, He got to thinking - Are Pro bikes any different to yours or his?

"Necessity is the mother of all inventions," the adage states.
In my view, it's always of question of satisfying specific needs of one user (pro or not) so that he/she can make the most use out of the bike. If it necessitates to put this or that on a bike so to increase the potential of a biker, say, on winning a race, then it's a necessity to put it on the bike.
Lots'a love, cheers, & Mabuhay, from tropical Philippines! #KeepBiking
Rich and Neil need to race each other in an EWS race.
it's up to other riders to judge, here's mine custom YT Tues and my friend has a custom Slash 2022...th-cam.com/video/6Y-X1pkic8M/w-d-xo.html
Really interesting. The EWS racers seem to take a step back from the slackness race.
Narrower bars too!
@@mybadvideos Lotta trees on the track so even shorter normal bars help. But most of my customers run their bars too wide. Watch Lee likes bikes video with the the joy of bike TH-cam channel will show you how to size yours correctly
Interesting to see some diversity in the setups. 29 vs. mullet and coil vs. air.
Seems like the actual enduro racing requires quite much more nimble bike than what most manufacturers try to sell as a enduro bike.
Consumer enduro bikes (/setup) are for us regular folk who won’t be able to control these setups. We’d simply be slower/sketchier if we ride one of these
@@nathancheung3601 They also have to cast a wide net (spec/setup wise) that works well for most consumers without any modifications.
really interesting vid, can you continue this at the next round covering some of the other bikes, and also at xc and downhill events as i think it will be quite interesting and also give an inside in who is testing next years products etc?
Loving Noga's livery. Reminds me of my 90's Karakoram.
Tequila Sunrise baby!
I had a pantera a bit similar remind me of that.
Noga is a megahit!!!! great video, love the pro's bikes, thanks and cheers
Thanks for the support, Andres! Glad to see you're loving the pro bike content! 👊
Focusing on the differences rather than on all the technology at once really makes things both understandable and interesting.
So the take-away would be: get the best bike you can afford but put in the time and effort to set it up to work best for you?
Yep a good suspension tune can make a value bike into a great bike and bad one can make a top of the line dream machine ride like crap on a cracker.
Buying the correct coil for your shock or setting the correct air pressure is critical but don't forget to adjust your compression and remound damping too. If you race making adjustments for the tracks will be real advantage.
Really enjoyed this, more so than I thought I would if I was to be totally honest. Good work team!!
Interesting to see more mullets bikes under some of the top pro riders.
2:35 whoops :D
1992 Karakoram paintjob on the GT! Love it!
Cheers Richiardo
I think one key difference in terms of an off the shelf, top end enduro bike, and one run by a race team, is suspension tuning. They have every aspect of the suspension optimized for them more so than adjusting a few dials, changing the amount or weight of oil in the lowers, and adding or removing volume reducers could do.
Any suspension tuning shop is able to tune your suspension for you and your bike if you wanted to.
@@Pienimusta but not tuned for every race type and data acquired over time. I’m sure team Altheron will pay more attention than my local suspension shop lol
@@Pienimusta if I had the money for it and my local shop offered that I would. The most they can do right now are rebuilds
Some one needs to show the pro mechanic that’s “all about the details” how to cut a zip tie properly.
Looks like the trend to wider bars has truly reversed. Charlie on 740mm.
If they were as slow as me then they'd all have 800mm wide bars!
Nice to see several of the boys rocking the Rock Shox Zeb, now I feel kinda proud that I have the same front fork lol
I ride a 2011 Giant Talon so yes, they are
2013 Talon here!! 😬
I might be wrong but i tend to think the biggest differences in standard bikes vs pro bikes would be seen in UCI Downhill, & freeride comps like DarkFest or Rampage, or in Crankworx Slopestyle.. Still cool to see all the details though..
Every one’s putting 180mm discs on the front these days
Meanwhile 90% of us over 80kg we will stick to 200/220 😅
Only for Tweed, which is apparently not as hard on brakes as other races. you can bet it will be 203s and 220s in the Alps and Whistler.
@@mrvwbug4423 doesn’t make any difference. You have more control and better feel with smaller rotors. It’s better for braking over rough loose ground and you’re never really braking hard or coming to a full stop at this level just scrubbing speed so power isn’t a massive requirement so bigger rotors are unnecessary for quite a lot of people. All personal preference though.
so back to alloy for rims - nice :D
big travel mountainbikes look similar to motocross bikes from the side witout the engines
I've wanted to try a dirtbike since I was a kid (and never got to) and when I tried my uncles Trek Rail coming from a 26.5" I was like "okay I feel like I just tried my first dirt bike" lol Definitely made me NOT want a 50 pound bike and has me considering my lightest options in mixed wheel or even a 27.5" like a Transistion Scout or Patrol
I was really intrigued about the single wall rims to be honest, wouldn't mind trying a set of high quality single wall rims myself!
Let’s get some more detail, rider weight fork and shock set up, flats or clipless, tyres, casings, pressures, pad types etc 👍
Man i really need subtitles to understand the mechanic. 😮
I run a pumptrack setup on the enduro trails, or so my speed would have you believe
Now the question is, the bikes that were pretty much stock… are they closer to perfect from factory than the counterparts, and that’s why the rest are changed
Great and interesting video! Had to search how those bikes with custom CNC linkage look like.
You cannot buy three of the parts on Elliot’s bike. Forks and shock are the new rs and you cannot buy a 27.5 Michelin dh tyre for love nor money.
10:10 what are those grips? the look mint
Felt like Rich was rushing everyone on this video. 🤔
Enlightening. It does make me laugh when pros say that their frame provider has allowed them to tweak the setup .. I would be aghast if that wasn’t the case
Surprised to see so many sponsored bikes running X01 instead of XX1
Just curious but what bar ends were they running. I've never seen that brand.
LoamLab components makes them, called the CounterPunch and they go well!
Where can I get the barends at 7:48? Looks like a good idea.
Loamlab components
suspension looks same on outside but is it same on inside?
Where’s PIVOT??
The biggest difference between the pro's bikes and ours!!!! An unlimited budget 💲💲💵💵
Only here for the Tequila Sunrise 🍹👍🏿
5:46 giggity
The line is so blurred from Pro bike to Joe bike nowadays!
nice pinkbike segment!!
So are the biked with custom tweaks, especially geometry and suspension tweaks just showing us that the manufacturer didn't get it exactly right?
More like tweaking the bike to the rider, most of the custom tweaks shown here, aside from the custom mullet links and prototype parts are things anyone can do. Anglesets are readily available, and a good shop can do a custom tune on the fork and shock for anyone
I'd race any of them on my San quentin 😂😂😂
I ride a £300 hardtail. I can't afford even the cheapest pro bike.
Great bikes! So not too slack and overbraked. Lol
Wtf. Your shots are too wide! A plane can fit the top and sides. 🤣🤣🤣 You could've shot closer to the owner and the bike. I was half expecting Blake to appear somewhere in those spaces.🤷♂️😆
Can't be ripping off Bernard's "sports fans"...
It is all about shock tune, racers have fty build shocks and forks for them, we dont!
to?
Looks nothing like a Mountain Bike from the 70s and 80s which were just really Gravel bikes.
Yes they are ten times more expensive
3rd
🥉👍
Ya mine some cheap parts good frame thier full on
Food for algorithm ;-)
I'd love to know if Spectrals used by pros (if there are still such) get this horseshit of headset as the rest of us
Pretty sure the Canyon Collectiv riders are on Strives, Moir is on a Strive for sure.
@@mrvwbug4423 He tested a Spectral too and also had a dream bike made up. Didn't look like a crap headset in that.
I can’t take a man seriously while he’s wearing ugg boots
I do really like this channel but just getting bored of seeing expensive bikes that the vast majority of people cant afford. Also let's be real here, almost all of your viewers 1.87 million viewers are riding for exercise and fun not racing.
Can we just get excited about going for rides on our bikes no matter what the cost, I want to know about all the cool trails around the country not another 10 grand bike with carbon blah blah blah ....
Well said
And who actually wants to watch videos of cheap bikes that break at any opportunity
Some people watch these videos because they incorporate some of these setups. The pros are on the cutting edge and it’s fun to keep one’s personal rig on point. It’s another way of having fun on a bike
pro this pro that why even bother almost all of us ride to have fun not to qualify for EWS wtf
Someone needs to make a "Lazy mountain biker" youtube channel. One man one hor...bike! Who just drives and does basic maintenance!
@@Zetbo try watching hardtail party great channel
Check out Spindatt, also you did read the title before you clicked eh?
The literal point of the channel is to show the new tech in mtb’s
I ride a lot of elements of a pro setup and that is how I have fun
HEY RICCI I WAS FIRST
🥇🙌
I'll save you 20 minutes, no.
First ngl nice vid
12 seconds late than the first comment
I see mtb’s as dirt bikes baby brother. They pretty much dirt bikes without engines. I ride and follow MX, stock dirt bikes are more than enough for the majority of people so what’s the difference between a stock dirt bike & a factory one? The engines will be tuned to the riders style, parts that are unavailable to the general public. Same with the suspension, brakes & even the handlebars & foot pegs will be tailor made. A lot of the stuff will be handmade like foot begs & triple clamps. These bikes are a work of art. It’s no different in the mtb world, component’s are tailor made for the rider & some stuff isn’t available to the public (yet).
The second-year I was riding that was the bomb:
