  • Two years before he first donned The Count's cloak for Dracula, Christopher Lee had one of his earliest leading roles in this fascinating low budget short subject. Arguably Lee's first venture into Gothic territory on screen, it memorably features the camera - perhaps for the very first time - zooming in for a chilling close up of those unforgettably steely eyes.

So cool to see the famous vampires Count Dracula and Count von Krolock in the same scenes together! Also great because of the story behind it. Ferdy Mayne got himself and Christopher Lee both in serious trouble because Ferdy told a raucous joke behind the set, causing him and Lee both to lose it. They were howling so loudly that both were thrown off the set and put on temporary report with Equity for misbehavior in a studio!

From when the police spot him speeding is filmed in Bushey Hertfordshire where I was born and bred. A lot of the buildings are still there to this day. Although some are not. Also much more built up now. Amazing to see my home town in an old movie.

And I'm still there today! Now the clips are just a tour of long gone pubs.

I have this on DVD and as always Christopher delivers top class performances in his films.I noticed on his right hand his baby finger he must of done this before the film called The Warriors where Christopher has a sword fight with a broadsword to Errol Flynn and had Errol Flynn slice his finger and made poor Christopher with a crooked bent baby finger.

Nice little early potboiler Christopher Lee giving off her some charisma vibes. Nice opposition from Ferdy Mayne

Very good. Interesting that in these earlier films, Christopher Lee's voice is markedly less deep than he made it become in much later years. Also, I suspect that this is his real hair (later, he always wore a hair piece), as one can see an incipient bald patch (very slight) at the back of his head (unless I am mistaken!).
Anyway, it's a treat to be able to watch this well-made little film. Even in 1955, Lee clearly had screen presence. And I had never seen this film before (or even heard of it) - after being a huge fan of Lee's for more than half a century!
