This is the best video if you like me, knows what the pyrometric cones are and do but have never used them and want to learn how to set them up in the kiln. Thanks for the excellent explanation.

A really good video! thank you, as I no longer feel mystified about how cones work and why. Thanks again!

You are welcome, cones are your view into exactly what is happening inside each firing!

Could you say if those cones have an expiry date

I don't think they do, as long as they are kept dry.

So how do you check? Do I fire. Let us cool down and look each time? Do I watch through a peep hole?

Put the cones in the kiln and take a look at them after the firing. Watching them through a peep hole is the way they were used many years ago, and you could do that if you were curious, generally you would only check them once the kiln has cooled.

Hi, help me understand…. At the end you say that the coolest witness cone (O7) should meld into the floor yet the hotter (05) won’t budge. (??). The 06 is perfect.
Unless i’m having a brain fart, 05 is hotter than 07 so the one on the right must be the 07 and the cone that melted into itself should be the 05. I think you started the video saying it correctly, but ended it switched! Please please please clarify as I’m trying to prove a point to a potter mate! Thank you so much.

05 hotter than 06 so will should not bend in a 06 firing. 07 lower temp so bends and lays flat in an 06 firing. Make Sense??

higher number - lower temp: ...018, 017, etc, 'up' in temp to 07 then up to 06 then up to 05. So, 05 is the higher temp than 06. These are "low fire" numbers, up to Cone 1. Then beyond that, on up in temp firing above typical bisque temp of 04, on to Cones 1,2,3,4...etc... mid-fire and high fire... hope that helps?
