  • In Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, each fire engine is identified with the same number as the station it is assigned to, so Station 68’s engine is Engine 68. In addition to that number, each apparatus has a unique identifier for maintenance. Engine 68’s maintenance number for the past seven years has been E03-1.
E03-1 was commissioned in 2003 to serve the citizens of Parkland. It was housed at Station 61 from 2003-2015, where it responded to roughly 43,600 calls.
In 2015, it was rehoused to Station 68, where it responded to an additional 12,000 + incidents. Because of where this fire engine was housed, it was privileged to respond to most of the multi-company incidents in our department over the past 19 years, including the three alarm Canyon Rd Storage Fire, 3 Alarm Cold Storage Fire, Labor Day Fire Storm, as well as countless motor vehicle accidents, cardiac arrests, and EMS calls. Scores of lives and property have been saved by E03-1, delivering responders safely to the scene.
Its 19 years of frontline service could not have been possible without the hard work from our dedicated Fleet Maintenance personnel, whose motto is “Provide Pride with a Reliable Ride.” This Pumper has over 218,000 miles and over 14,000 hours on it. Each hour on a fire engine equates to roughly 30 miles of use, so the number of hours on E03-1 equals over 400,000 miles of actual wear and tear!
A condensed list of some of the more extensive repairs are:
    · Front and rear suspension replacement
    · Four radiators replaced
    · Replaced alternator
    · Six battery replacements
    · Three starter motors
    · Two turbochargers
    · Twenty-six scheduled services and repairs
    · Two transmission replacements
    - Dozens of tires and many other repairs.
This fire engine’s story isn’t done just yet. It will now go into a reserve engine status, where it will be placed into service at any one of our 12 stations, including the Puyallup Fairgrounds. Because of continued pride in ownership, it will function as a reliable backup for our newer engines when they need maintenance or repairs.
With the dedication of our new 2021 KME Predator, E68 will continue to provide thousands of responses to the people of Central Pierce. The modern safety features and improved lighting systems will provide crew safety, while the increased compartment and cabin space will enhance our crews. It is identical to the other engines in our fleet, adds consistency for all crews, and increases efficiency.
We want to thank the Commissioners and our Citizens for their continued support and for providing us with a fire engine that will serve the community for many years to come.
We also would like to recognize the extraordinary efforts of our Apparatus Spec Team and the Fleet personnel at the Shop for getting this engine safety checked and final outfitting. Lieutenant Todd Noll for assisting the crews in the last training. West Side Vinyl and Engraving for marking all the tools and equipment.
    History of the Push-in Ceremony:
In the 1800s, horse-drawn steam pumpers would return to the firehouse but could not back themselves up. The firefighters would wash the pump and horses, then detach the pumper from the horses and work together to push the heavy pump into the firehouse by hand.
The transfer of tank water is symbolic of the passing of the torch to the next apparatus.
