  • Aang handled one of the most difficult tasks any Avatar has ever faced at an incredibly young age, and he did it all while remaining true to his own moral compass. I believe he's the most compassionate Avatar we've ever seen.
Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra make up my favorite franchise of all time. Oddly enough, I haven't talked about it all that much here on my channel. WELL that's about to change, I'm in the Avatar State and going hard to bring you tons of Avatar and Korra content. This is one of many to come, expect breakdowns on Avatars Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk and Wan coming soon, in addition to tons of other ATLA and LoK videos.

Aang not killing Ozai works twofold: One, it's a decidedly non-Western solution to a problem in a show made by Western creators. It shows the kids watching that no, a real hero doesn't kill or even make someone fall from a cliff. Sometimes bringing them down to normal and locking them away is the answer.
Two, killing Ozai would have made him a martyr. He would have died a hero in the eyes of his followers and they'd keep the war going to avenge him. Yes, his being spared did lead to some conflict down the line, but it was in the vein of "what do we do going forward, the world needs to change". It let the story move on rather than keep it in an endless cycle of war and revenge, which imo would be boring.

Not to mention that his core values come from his genocided culture & preserving his moral code is also preserving a place in the world for the values of Airbenders. The avatar didn’t kill the Firelord, an Airbender, who just so happens to also be the Avatar avenged his people, deposed the firelord & spared his life in the ultimate act of pacifism.

The funny thing is, as much as Aang was an amazingly kind person 4 so many people - as a dad.......he kinda sucked 😕
Now I am NOT saying he didn’t love all his kids but his (understandably) obsessive desire 2 restore Air Nomad culture thru his son Tenzin meant Kya & Bumi were essentially neglected emotionally. But that’s the thing - even tho they weren’t airbenders they were still Air NATION - just as Tenzin & his siblings were all Water Tribe as well thru Katara. But they were so detached from their Air Nomad heritage, the Air Acolytes weren’t even aware Aang had other children 😞 which all but confirms Aang never took them 2 the Air Temples like he did Tenzin & that’s just.......REALLY sad 😞
Tenzin had his own burdens placed upon him by Aang & I think that actively shaped his no-nonsense attitude growing up. And he never got 2 explore other parts of himself like his Water Tribe culture (something I believe Kya & Bumi got 2 do)
I’m of mixed heritage (South American & English) & I firmly believe it’s important 2 experience ALL parts of your heritage - not just b placed in 1 part due 2 appearance or talents that lend themselves 2 a particular culture. That can limit your opportunities 2 explore different parts of yourself & unfortunately - I think Aang’s kids most likely never really felt that they were part of both the Air Nation & Water Tribe.
A person can b absolutely amazing at what they do, but that doesn’t mean it’ll transfer 2 EVERY role they take on 🤷‍♀️
But that’s just what I took away from it.
If u have a different take - that’s more than okay.

He's clearly capable of great anger in the moment (consider also the moment in "The Avatar State" when Katara is buried alive and for all Aang knows she might be dead) but it's also clear from The Guru that he feels incredibly guilty about these bursts of anger, and he does try to forgive.

In my mind Compassion is one of the strongest emotions any person could possess. It one of the reasons, Anng as a Cartoon character stood out from others, even from superheros, in my child hood.
Kinda off topic and I don't know if anyone is into DC Comics or the Green Lantern Mythos, but there these things known as Emotional Entities, in DC Comics. Each the physical embodiment of a specific emotion, more specifically Rage, Greed, Fear, Will, Hope, Compassion, and Love.
Long Story Short, in the comics when asked how these emotions were born. Compassion's answer was simple "That rage grows Murder, Hope from Prayer, But Compassion is offered To All."
I know this sounds Cheesy, but I believe True Compassion is a lesson we could all learn greatly from, in such trying times.

that's why I like Aang because he's a friend to all living things from spirits, animals, and to the fire nation (except Ozai and a few others). Even when he was 140, he never resorted to killing and instead took Yokone's bending like he did to Ozai. if he had met Wan, he would of known that the two of them were similar. Wan also was friendly to animals and spirits. and considering Wan is from the fire nation (well before it became a nation), it's sorta funny. not only that, Aang would of been proud of Korra when she chose to leave the spirit portals open (proving Old Iron wrong) and talking Kuvira down and even showed her compassion. (unlike Ozai who continued to fight him)

There is a difference between compassion and attachment. First is beneficial for one's spiritual and/or psychic health while second breeds fear and hatred when something threatens to break an attachment. You can seriously dig and dig for ideas of buddhist philosophy in this cartoon. No other like it.

Aang's compassion made him a great avatar, but the manner in which he dealt with the firelord was arguably inhumane because it amounts to maiming someone. It's not all that dissimilar to how slave owners used to cut off a slave's foot as punishment for attempting to run away. Furthermore, if we're going to cite Iroh's lessons as such a significant part of what constitutes the show's message on ethics and how life should be lived, then Aang totally ignored one of the most prevalent and implicit lessons Iroh taught us all during the show: discretion is the better part of valor. Iroh knows there's no need to exacerbate a situation with violence, but he also recognizes when he's dealing with a zealot. Iroh knew Azula and Ozai needed to be dealt with through force, not compassion. I really believe that while Aang's compassion was both his best and worst quality. It helped him to do so many amazing things during life, but it also made his life so much more difficult than it needed to be in places. Korra was obviously meant to be an illustration of the opposite philosophy and a response to what would have happened if Aang had thrown around his power as the avatar more readily.

    • @vianjelos
      @vianjelos 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

THIS is how I feel. If bending is a part of someone, its a natrual part of their physical and spiritual beings..then taking it away is the same as taking away a pianist hands or a runners legs. And in a way it looks simmilar to how a person used to be lobotimized(the whole forhead thing being that lobotomies were done to destroy the prefrontal cortext which is right behind the forehead) it is in my opinion far more crule to take someones bending away and let them live than it is to just kill them. You mentioned Korra and thats a great point..not only was Amon being able to take bending away depicted as sinister and creepy(a mirror to how crooks would have seen Aang) but Korra herself saw no value in herlife without her bending...and we dont know how many took their lives after Amon stole their bending away. We see in S1 of korra the negative affects of removing ones bending, the victims are shells of their former selves and there is an immense mental truama left behind. It would be less cruel to just kill someone honestly. Also, as shown in Korra, this resolution was deeply flawed..because Aang mistakenly equated bending with power but this isnt the case. Zuko was only made fire lord because his father abdicated in order to become the phenoix king, Azula was heir apparent but her subsequent loss at the Agni Kai(technically she lost because she cheated)and descent into madness made her unable to take the throne so Zuko was crowned instead. Had Ozai not abdicated prior, he would still have been the fire lord bending or no bending, and still kept the war ongoing. Yakon likewise has the power of bribery whicj saw his escape from prison. Aang didnt recognize that true power doesnt come from bending and that non benders can be as much a threat. How would he have delt with the equalist? Or a major non bender in power?

You all know we are talking about Ozai right..? Ozai deserved to die. But it was against Aang's morals. So he took out Ozai's bending. If it was someone else, someone who is not as inhumane and demonic as Ozai, someone who is not a guy who would burn his son's eye, someone who isn't psychopath, then it would be wrong. This is Ozai we are talking about. You know what Zuko said to Ozai at the end of the show...? "The Avatar was too kind to let you live.." even his own son thought this guy deserves to die. Ozai is a psychopath. He is a SKILLED psychopath. Just Imprisonment is not enough. He is of Iroh's level of skill. This guy either should be killed, or be robbed of his bending. There was no other way.

We felt that effect, tha feeling that Amon is taking one aspect of their life, close to killing. If murdering someone is questionable for aang, what is the difference with taking their bending away when you are taking away the value of their life.
