It's the feminist hive mind. Sitting with crossed legs may be what's most comfortable for many, many people, but there are TWO options: right over left, or left over right. What are the odds, then, that this isn't a hive mind and around HALF of the panel just so happened to be sat that way?
They each had two options, and still half of them sat that same way. One out of every two women there made the same one in two choice. What are the chances of that just happening?!

"TL;DR" is short for "Too Long; Didn't Read" and started as a meme on 4chan in, I think, 2005 where people originally wrote out every word. It was a common response to "text walls", which used to be rather small compared to today's standards. I find it super ironic that someone who only responds to sentence fragments, while still feeling intellectually superior for some reason, would call themselves that.

    • @a.j8307

Or the fact that even though men do die in war, there is often a widow and sometimes even children left fatherless. Not to mention the mother of the soldier, female relatives and friends. Survivors can still be considered victims of war. widow is now stuck raising their children alone, and without the income of the husband. Life insurance only goes so far.
War can have all of these affects on women, and still we have people saying men are the only victims of war and complaining that they're not forced to enter the draft. (Even though in Israel, women have mandatory military service, of two years minimum IIRC). As well as using the draft as an "example" of how society favors women and this is more proof that the patriarchy doesn't real. As Shaun said, someone has to stay behind when men go off to war, and this important responsibility that women had was part of the rise of feminism's popularity with Rosie the Riveter during WWII.
And you don't even have to be drafted to be killed during a war. There were women living in Hiroshima....

I came back to this video and thought to provide a very clear example of what I meant. Now as a warning, this is obviously upsetting stuff: look up "Rape during the occupation of Germany". After WWII Soviet soldiers raped an estimate of 2 million women (German, Polish, Soviet). 2 million. Many of them were repeated rapes and gang rapes. The leathality of those rapes was around 15%. 15%!!!!! Can you imagine what one would have to do to rape someone to death? And how many more women were left permanently crippled, incontinent, with severe internal damages? Some of the victims were as young as 8 years old.
I appreciate everyone else responding to this comment bringing up other, less graphic but still significant examples, but... I just need to let this sink in. This is what happens to women because of war. The above example is just one of the better documented ones among many, among all such things that happen during war and genocide. Anyone who says the war doesn't affect women is a fool. A disrespectful, uneducated fool, willingly unaware of how the oppression of one sex spikes during times of crisis, war, fascism, unwilling to even consider the significance of this. Because after all, women have it so good, they don't even get drafted, they get to just sit comfy at home while the men fight. Right?

I think Shaun is being too generous by suggesting TL;DR is an idiot. He didn't 'jump the gun' in the first example, he deliberately edited. The neoliberal bit is an argument in bad faith. The twisting of "compassion" is a bad faith argument. It's all straw men and deliberate misunderstanding. This content is for people who want to see someone be more unreasonable and disagreeable than they are willing to be, while reinforcing-and excusing- their own, 'polite' prejudices.

Do you mean that he is cherry-picking the arguments to counter? Or that he's cherry-picking in a way that misrepresents TL;DR's arguments themselves? If you're saying the former then I agree with you -- there are definitely lots of legitimate arguments against Anita's ideas that would be less of a "low hanging-fruit" type of thing to pick apart, but then again I don't think that's the point of this video in particular. The point is to show that this type of argument shouldn't even be made to begin with since it's just a lazy way of showing your (typically young) viewers how to argue. There are other places for more nuanced discussion that would lead to a very different type of video than the one above, you know? I just don't think that's what he was going for.

I binged a bunch of these videos in the past two days and unfortunately they've all kind of strung together so apologies if I get something wrong here. I hope you don't completely abandon making response videos directly at some anti-fem channels. While I think channels like Shaun and Jen are obviously really good, important and worthwhile with their concise, well thought out and researched vids, I also think videos that get straight to the point, sharp and immediate are just as worthwhile. ContraPoints often does this in his videos, like when he talked about the made up problems of race that white people talk about in his Cultural Appropriation video.
I'm not saying you don't have to be well researched, just that there's also a need for someone to just come out and outright state '' what in the fuck are you talking about? ''

"Too long," and "Didn't read," aren't even separate clauses (they lack a noun). When someone's channel name is titled "Too long; didn't read", their channel's name is shortened to an acronym despite a lack of being affected by character limits *and* they incorrectly use a semicolon (something that is used to separate two related clauses), odds are they didn't read jack shit at any point in their life.

If someone is being victimized, they call them a terrorist. If someone from the dominant group speaks on behalf of the victim, they go "butt out". Sure, bearing was briefly shown here at his worst, but besides the fact that he isn't mentioned in the title (one of the big factors deciding wether or not fanatics will know their lord and savior has been attacked), TL;DR actually responded, and even went out of his way to make further videos on Shaun, practically encouraging his fanatics to come here out of spite, wether it was unintentional or not. Why is Anita Sarkeesian always seen by anti-SJWs as this unbelievably irrational evil feminist super villain? She's just a regular feminist, with perfectly understandable and reasonable views, who's definitely smart and appears to be somewhat nice, and, altough she finds many gaming tropes sexist, she already made it pretty clear that there is nothing wrong with enjoying video games! Oh, i get it... it's because she became notorious, so they must destroy her, so they can destroy feminism as a whole!

I didn't see the original clips of her saying that, but maybe that's what she meant?

@@disappointingperson9162 Its ironic to me that the subject of her talk before and after the indicated timestamp is how people try to deny women's life experiences, which is what is happening with the way those two links are being presented, one as a clip, the other a timestamp.
In the second link, Anita Sarkeesian - Hate and heroism, she says that her dad was a computer engineer, her house was filled with gaming machines, she loved Mario and Kirby, and that when she was 10 she had to convince her parents to get her a game boy because they weren't sure if a male-marketed game "boy" was appropriate for a little girl.
She says she played games on and off through her teenage and college years, and that she studied under a prominent games scholar, Jennifer Jenson at York University. She says she took courses on gaming and education.
"In short, I've been playing games for most of my life."
She goes on to expand on the conspiracy theories people have invented to denigrate her and 'prove' she doesn't play games.
And then she puts a picture of a bunch of games (including Katamari Damacy, Gone Home, Plants Vs Zombies, 3's, Angry Birds, Lemmings, Mario Kart Wii, Rock Band, plus more) on the screen, and describes how they're stigmatized in a gendered manner as "casual games", "not real games" despite being some of her favorites.
The fact that, when I saw that wall of games and categorized them in my head as "casual games" before she said anything, certainly lends credit to that point.
She says that the male-centric focus of violent video game design and marketing and its very homogeneous playerbase as well as not being considered a "real gamer" if you don't play those types (fps and whatnot) has had the effect of making women feel unwelcome, and created a very complicated relationship between her and gaming.
Which leads to this thread-relevant bit here:
Quote: "As a result I, like many women, have had a complicated relationship with video games. My engagement with gaming has ebbed and flowed over the years, but I keep coming back to it out of a genuine love for the potential of the medium and a belief that it can be better."
Continued: "So, even though I was actually playing a lot of games, these kinds of games [indicating the games displayed behind her], I still at various times in my life refused to call myself a gamer. And I didn't identify as a fan of the medium as a whole, which I think is not that uncommon of an experience for young women."
...like, her defense is built into that talk. It makes perfect sense to me why she said what she did in the first video, though I would sure like to have the whole video instead of a snippet for proper context. Her relationship with video games was complicated, she may have actually internalized the idea that she wasn't a "real gamer" for not liking certain games. She might not have been up to speed with the industry as a whole at the time.
But people like to take that statement, without any nuance, without granting her the benefit of doubt, her lived experience, her education, and her clearly passion-focused career, and just use those few words to define her, to defeat her.
      To shut her down.

Feminism isn't just about benefiting women. It's about equality on all fronts. This includes subjects like toxic masculinity, male victims of sexual assault and, yes, men being drafted for war.
I'm also a bit uncertain how women 'reap all the benefits'? Can you explain your thoughts on this further? What is there to reap from losing loved ones/homes/lives/being trafficked or bombed or raided or left at home to both care for children and support the household/work/contribute to the war effort?

    • @TheCheat_1337
      @TheCheat_1337 8 ปีที่แล้ว +27

Not sure why some people are making out the term to be a buzzword with some arcane meaning, it's fairly straightforward. It's a revival of laissez-faire capitalist ideology that came into prominence around the Thatcher/Reagan era that emphasizes deregulation, lower taxes, free trade, less government spending on welfare and privatization of state run services under the belief that private industry is more efficient and profitable. It also leads to things like a reduction of workers' rights in the interests of free trade (obviously because there would be no point offshoring industries if it wasn't cheaper in terms of labor costs to produce things in developing countries as opposed to developed ones).
The "neo" part is simply meant to indicate it is a revival of classical liberal ideas, since in the US, from the New Deal era, politicians in both major parties tended to implement policies that had the state play a major role in the economy, with high taxes, and more regulation/legislation wasn't considered political poison.
Neoconservatism is something else entirely, they don't actually really have much to do with each other. Neoconservatism is primarily an ideology that advocates for American foreign intervention. It's the jingoistic, pro-military American knows best ideology and should be trying to implement its values on other countries.
