CB500X - Solo Norway trip Part 17 - Rain? Had to happen some time!

  • This is Part 17 of my trip continuing the journey having left the campsite at Hofles, and another gentle day, taking in some un-made roads (I've come to accept I prefer made roads but I enjoy the occasional un-made), more ferries and rain. I've been really lucky with the weather up until now, so it was to be expected. It is the first real test of my new Goretex boots and my over-suit.
    The whole journey took me through the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and into Norway right the way up to Nordkapp, the furthest point you can travel by motorcycle or car in mainland Europe and then back through Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany, Belgium and France over a 7 week period late May - mid July 2023
    I am back in the UK now, but please do add your comments and I'll get back to you.
    Hoping you can "Like" the video, as this does help the channel.
    All my best wishes, thanks again for watching

    Thanks for the upload. Better audio clarity on this one. Thought the scenery (and the rain) was very like the far North West coast of Scotland.

    Unless elk are vastly different in Norway than in Canada then that statue was of a moose. Most dangerous animal in Canada (especially at certain times of year). Your videos have me toying with the idea of gearing up to film my upcoming trips, but only for family members that would maybe want to see them. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Thanks for the information, I thought the reindeer were Elk too 🙄 so don't go by what I say 😁. From what I've seen on TV you have some fabulous scenery out there, sharing it with the family sounds a great idea.

    Good to be adaptable depending on weather conditions and always encouraging to meet hospitable folk along the way. Motorcycle camping and wet weather can be quite a challenge! I think with those fuel prices you have probably chosen the perfect bike for your trip....Cheers.

      Absolutely ref the bike and fuel, and yes, I met many lovely folk on my trip, many offered me coffee when they had a brew going. Elizabeth though went above and beyond, she offered me a coffee and help to erect the tent, but I politely declined, once the tent was up she came back with 2 bottles of beer and her homemade reindeer burgers and we sat and chatted for ages, until the midges got the better of us. She was German, living in Sweden and currently touring Scandinavia in the camper with her husband and Husky "until I think it is time to go home". Nice approach to their retirement.

    Glad to see a bit of rain didn't dampen your spirits Nick. According to Eurostats, Norway has the highest food prices in Europe at 54% higher than the average of all the EU countries -- judging by the price of that mini-baguette, for once I believe the stats!

    • @bikingtravels
      @bikingtravels  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      🤣 Yes, I think the stats are right, and good weather is a bonus really not an expectation, having said that, I know which I prefer 😉

    reminded me of my 17,500klm ride around the block last year. Spent 3 months on the road the last 4 of which was rain, rain, and more rain. cut the trip short and am going back to finish it off this coming Janruary. Hope you have better luck than I. stay upright and keep the vids coming, cheers Nick.

    The rain had to catch up with you eventually Nick. Riding on the secondary roads is so much more enjoyable than the express roads, one can relax and enjoy the ride. It’s nice to have a beer waiting on you at the end of the day. Looking forward to the next episode. Cheers, Jim

      Thanks Jim, yep, only so far you can out run the weather. Not only was it a beer, it was a cold and free beer with great company... what more can you ask for! 😊

    Enjoying your travel log and seeing wonderful Norway!
    Just as an aside how is the bike doing? How frequently do you oil the chain and sprockets,check tyre pressures, oil etc?
    I have a similar CB500X and I just love how it copes with anything I want it to do!

    • @bikingtravels
      @bikingtravels  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Many thanks John. The bike performed really well, with no issues. I visually inspected tyres and chain daily but checked tyre pressures once a week or thereabouts and it rarely needed any. I adjusted the chain (nothing much) 3 times during the trip and once at the service I needed to have done later in the trip. It is a great little bike, sounds like you enjoy yours too

      @@bikingtravels Hi Nick
      Yes I do find that I ride it more than my other bikes. (BMW R1100GS, BMWR1100S and Honda CB1100EX)
      It does everything so well and I’d say it’s like a “Swiss army knife” always does way beyond what you would think and sips fuel!
      I so much enjoy your adventures and the quality of your filmmaking as I know how difficult it is to edit material to keep it factual and interesting!
      I so enjoy each episode!
      Regards
      John

    Overall you've done great with the weather Nick.
    What contingency did you have for breakdown or punctures?
    Thanks again

    • @bikingtravels
      @bikingtravels  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Many thanks for the comment and question, yes, I was really lucky with the weather. I carried a tyre repair kit and electric pump in the case of punctures, extra bulk, but I'd rather be safe than sorry and didn't need to use them. I also carried some basic tools so that I could adjust the chain and tighten anything that came loose, but not really for roadside repair, oh, and of course Duck tape. I had European break-down cover through the RAC in the UK, it was not cheap at £230 but lasts a year and covered me for being out of the country for the trip, again, a peace of mind judgement call.
      My mechanical aptitude doesn't really extend far, so this basic approach was the right one for me. Other folk may take a lot more (or less), but no point taking items I couldn't use.
      Nick
