Sometimes, people need a little more guidance then just "start writing." While true, its difficult. This, and your other video with the 3 exercises (free writing, dialog, and opening paragraph), definitely helped me to atleast put something down on paper. Plus, since I don't have time to really think, I just start writing the first thing, more or less, that comes to mind. Anyways, I just wanted to say thanks!
I know that feeling. Sometimes the idea begins after the writing for me, in an odd way. Jumping in without much of a plan can occasionally prompt something I wouldn't have found otherwise.
This was very helpful, thank you! I got a full page written. It's really dense and I love it. I have plenty of story ideas, and I start them, but the last thing I actually finished was in 2019, and before that it's been decades. This one's just a couple of days old. The new page has a little about each of the main characters, their environment, first paragraph, last paragraph, the event that changes the narrator's life, and where he might go from here (it bounces around a lot because the narrator is a 9-year-old in a post-literate future - I'll need to find a balance between reflecting that, and making it understandable). It was really nice to feel like I was sitting down with other viewers and writers, all doing the same thing at the same time, for the love of writing. So thanks!
Wow… I had no idea how to begin my novel. The majority of it is written but I did not have an idea on the beginning scene and how I wanted it. This activity just gave me the perfect inspiration for my opening scene! I will have to tweak some of the storyline to fill plot holes but everything just came together in my mind as I wanted for the tone to be which I previously could not quite figure out until now. Thank you so much!!!!!
You're really nice :) I'm actually quite new to your chanel, so I'm still not too familiar with your style. So everytime I see your thumbnails, I feel like it's going to be a shallow tips video, onde of those that promises way more than it delivers and sometimes just makes you feel worse about your writing. But I still click, because I'm desperate to be a better a writer. And then when your face pops up I'm like "whew! It's actually gonna be a good video". Idk I guess I'm trying to say your thumbnais don't match your vibes, but your videos are immaculate! I love how nice you are about writing and learning, makes me feel like it's okay to mess up as long as I'm trying.
Thank you! I know what you mean about the thumbnails, it's just very hard to balance actually attracting people to watch the videos with accurately showing my vibe. I wish it was easier to get folks in the door but it's just the way TH-cam works I guess! Really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. It's definitely okay to mess up, that's how we learn to make things better!
@@KierenWestwoodWriting I guess they are effective, since I am here. I just wanted to let you know in case you didn't. But since it's intentional, I'm all for it.
Hey, thank you very much! Your videos and exercises reallyyyy helped sooooo much that i now have a very good plot that I like more than other plots that i had come up with before. I saw your, " Become a writer 25 min" video before this and that 1st exercise of free writing that u gave generated a very good whole new idea that had came totally from me and not from any other books or movies or anything. That free writing generated another type of story for the third exercise that u gave in that video. But now, with that same theme in the free writing exercise i have got a whole new plot that is very interesting. Thank u soooooo much for your help. Not many youtubers know what they are saying or actually do what they say to do to others. And guess what! My plot is kind of similar to ur plot that is , i mean to say that both are focusing on the protagonist as someone from a detective or police force and the villian did a crime in ur plot, but, in my plot the villian is gonna do a crime and the protagonist has to stop the opposite force within a certain time or the whole world will be destroyed! Tell me what my plot feels like. Do u like it??? And also I want to read those books that u have written. Where can i get them???
I did it! It was a good exercise. I really didnt have much of an idea of what i was going to say, But ideas just kept coming to my mind and I kept writing and though it's probably nothing anyone would want to read, it still was a good exercise to do in getting that experience and learning how to just put those thoughts on paper. So thank you again. I can't wait to try your other exercises out
That's a good idea! I'll see if I can put something together for that. Would a similar approach as this video be what you'd find useful on that subject? Or more of an overall examination rather than an exercise?

I have a story that I'm still developing. This video gave me a great space to think about the beginning more!
I truly struggle with story ideas. Good ideas anyway, ones that don't feel lame or cookie-cutter or over used before. This was very helpful. Thanks!

@@KierenWestwoodWriting I did this exercise after work. Ended up writing for forty-five minutes and put down 750 words. Felt good!
Fantastic!
Excellent advice! Thanks, Kieren.

You are the most underrated youtuber I've watched
Thank you! Much appreciated.
Thanks to this video, I was able to write an opening scene without worrying anything

Your method of getting a spark is a really fun idea. I don't need it right now, but will absolutely try it in the future. 😊
thank you Kieren
These videos are great! Keep it up!
Thanks mate :) Appreciate you sticking with me.
@KierenWestwoodWriting Always, mate. Your channels are brilliant. Would you consider making a video on opening sentences?

I feel called out 😂 thank you, though!
What an awesome video! This was a great exercise and you made it really low stress and easy to start. Thanks for sharing! Excellent content as always!
Thank you! Low stress is definitely what I'm aiming for, that's a big part of what can hold people back I think (understandably).
