    Alright, the Frenchie as you said is a Bourbonnais, a nickname given to them after the company that built them but officially classed 29/751.3 377. - as you also said built for the PLM (Paris Leons Mediterranean) railway before the French railway companies were amalgamated into the SNCF - very old loco class, being built between 1854 and 1887, with 1,054 being built making it one of the most numerous classes of French steam locos in use on their national network. They were mainly used for heavy freight trains and reportedly were powerful with good rail adhesion which led to a very long working life of 90 years and formed the basis for a similar class 225 on the Egyptian State Railways which were similarly successful. They lasted up until at least World War II and beyond but not certain how long afterwards. There is one, number 1423 still with us, preserved in the French Cite Du Train Museum at Mulhouse. Hope this is useful!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Oli, thanks so much for that! I did find the Bourbonnais while researching for the review - they look similar, but noticeably quite different to the model I have - do you reckon that is what I have??
      Thanks so much for the info!
      Cheers,
      Sam :)

      @@SamsTrains No problem! Glad I could help. The only other locomotive I could think which is similar is the SNCF 030 C from the Est railway (a surviving example also preserved at Mulhouse) but that looks quite different from the model you have with a different top feed, six wheeled tender so this seems unlikely. I'm fairly certain (99.9%) that what you have IS a Bourbonnais as the class was modified somewhat over the years with more enclosed cabs, so that might be a version which was owned under SNCF which may account for it's difference in appearance. I've got a link to a photo of one below along with one of the 030C. The former seems to compare well to your model but if I find any info that isn't in French I'll let you know.
      Best,
      Oli

    My smallest tender loco is an odd one, do to it started its life as a T3 tank loco (i have a tank variant too). In 1960 four old BR 89 (ex T3) was given tenders from already withdrawn locos, because to the closing of the steam era they couldn't "refuel" as many places as they use to, and their diesel replacement wasn't yet to arrive, but they still had to deliver their goods as effective as they could. Their cab was modified, but kept their side water tanks. These locos received different tenders, one had a larger 4 axle one. The 4 T3 tender locos were withdrawn in 1968 as the last operating units of their type in the state railways fleet (the last private T3 was in use till 1979).

    Love these kinds of stout tender locos!
    And I heartily agree on Rocket, I am actually in the process of making an 1830s HO scale micro layout (Just a bit of scenery really, but since 1830s locos and coaches are so short, entire trains fit easily), and I currently have two non-static locomotives, one of which I've had to almost completely scratchbuild, another has a very-much-dead motor, and the other would be representing an imported US loco and looks just a tad out of place. I adore all the quirky 1830s locos out there, and Bachmann's "Old timer" collector's series models sold very well as starter sets since the locos and such were a lot cheaper to make. I don't know if Bachmann still makes any of them, but I wish that they or Hornby would come out with a new one, perhaps a Patentee-class 2-2-2 or something. They'd be much appreciated by the hobbyist since it's such an empty niche at the moment and finding existing mechanisms that fit in locos that small is challenging!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha thanks mate, me too! Your 1930s micro layout sounds superb, I'd love to see it when it's done, good luck! :D

    • @SamsTrains

    I devote my time more to understanding non-English things, so I can give you more info about the French loco. It's prototype was referred to in France as the Bourbonnais-type, and was originally built for the Paris Lyon & Mediterranean Railway in 1857. The PLM was merged with other French rail companies in 1938 to form the National Railways aka SNCF, and some of those venerable engines continued to see minor duties after WW2; at least one I think was held for preservation and is now at the French Railway Museum at Mulhouse. The coaches the model pulls are based off the Wagons-Lits Company's exquisite cars - which did indeed see regular service on the Orient Express, and also on the Night Ferry service that went right from London Victoria through to Paris via a cross-channel rail ferry. Samuel F.

    The French Engine is Awesome! She's referred to as a "Bourbonnais" 0-6-0 that was originally from the PLM ( Paris à Lyon et à la Méditerranée ) Railway before the SNCF, the design dates from around 1857. They were primarily goods engines but it's nice to see one have its day "hauling the varnish" as it were :-). They had to be a ball-buster to fire with a heavy load though, considering they're saturated with a relatively small firebox. I've got a soft spot for European Steam of all kinds, particularly British, French, and German. My taste for European Steam in HO/OO as far as Manufacturers go, is in Micro Metakit. They're like Jewelry and extremely rare depending on the loco (and yes, I know to some, an outrageous price tag), but they're simply gorgeous pieces of model engineering and they're all hand built in very limited runs so the price is justified. Takes me a quite a while to save up for them but for me they're well worth it and the fun is in the hunt of finding the particular engine you're after, and they've made some really unique machines! The one I'm looking for now is the SNCF DeGlehn Compound 241A-65.

      Thanks so much for the info on this! I came across the Bourbonnais, but they looked quite different to my model! Thanks again for the info, that's very handy!
      Thanks for watching - Sam :)

    • @steamandsmoke97
      @steamandsmoke97 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamsTrains You're welcome, there were variations of the design but this is one of the earliest renditions of it. I've heard the "Ouest" 030's with external Allan Straight Link valvegear loosely referred to as a Bourbonnais before (though they look quite different) so maybe that's the different look you're referring to? I love the complexity and uniqueness of the French Designs, even in the early days.

    I'm biased towards GWR locos, but that's because Duck is my favourite Thomas the Tank Engine character, and I've seen that loco in other movies, Chitty Bang-Bang is a good example. I'll always choose a GWR over an LNER or a British Railways loco. The Dean Goods, although not a GWR, came in a close second for me, while the County came in first. Love your vids. Keep up the good work!

    Good Evening Sam, I really enjoyed watching your Tiny Tender Engines running session.
    2:30, the French 0-6-0 Steam Locomotive is a 030 C Class Tender Locomotive, they we're built in the early 1880s for hauling freight and passenger trains, some of these locomotives worked for around 80 years until they we're withdrawn from service in the 1960s, I believe 2 are preserved,
    No.030.815 at the Cité du Train Museum in Mulhouse, France and No.030.841 at Expo Rail, the Canadian Railway Museum located in Montreal Quebec, Canada.
    Hope this helps.
    I have an idea for a running session, how about an international steam locomotive running session with steam locomotives from around the world?
    Thank you for your time.
