  • BBC documentary "Born To Swing" (sadly out of print) about the alumni of the Count Basie band of 1943. I transferred it from an old VHS I found in the public library since this is an important document and needs to be shared. When I first uploaded it, there was a 10 minute limit for uploads, so I cut it in separate parts; starting with the Jo Jones part since this was the most important one for me for personal reasons. I saw the part on Jo Jones as a part of a Max Roach documentary on German TV when I was just a teenaged drummer and it stuck with me ever since.
So now here's the whole documentary. I don't want to infringe any copyrights, but this document is just too important and needs to be seen.
It is kind of depressing to see how my heroes were treated, but their music is still so uplifting; even at a time when they didn't get the recognition they deserved.

Terribly depressing to see how these GREAT musicians ended up. They certainly deserved more recognition and definitely more money!

These musicians were real artists. They lived for their art. And they suffered for it in that the public largely forgot about them after the 1940's. But they remained true to their art regardless.
I love their art and I love these men.

Thank you so much. I am a Basie fan and had the luck to see him two times in concert, as many of his former sidemen. What makes this docu so special is that it gives an insight into a musician life as them age and public taste changes. Joe Newman I had the great pleasure to meet when he came to town with Lionel Hampton and hang out with him. So again, thank you for the effort. Stay healthy in this crazy times.

Thank you for uploading this gem of a documentary. Was there ever an album issued from the recording session in this film?

'Time' IS the test of all things.
    And,
Jazz, in all it's forms, has past the test.
It IS the AMERICAN music of ALL time.

That distinctive voice of Humphrey Lyttleton on the soundtrack, is fabulous. "Humph" (1921-2008) was a popular trumpeter in the Satchmo style & a popular "trad jazz" bandleader (his "Bad Penny Blues" was in the UK Top Twenty Hit Parade for 6 weeks, in 1956). He was also a newspaper cartoonist & a BBC radio "personality" for many years - his "posh" Upper Class accent (his father was a house master at Eton College , the poshest of the posh public schools) contrasting with his wicked sense of humour.

Great work! Thank you! It would be wonderful if we had just a little more information: I’d really like to know who is on the reunion recording: bass, piano, 2nd trombone, guitar, etc. the more ID you can do, just as a name while a picture scrolls, the better..

Marvelous documentary about the Count Basie alumni! Is that Frank Zappa(as a clerk?) and Buddy Rich at 28:47? Marvelous drumming by Papa Jo Jones starting at 32:06.
