B.B. King Live In Africa '74 is a rare - extremely rare - intimate view of
B.B. King in concert. At age 49, having "crossed over" to wide popularity with his show
at the Fillmore West in 1968 and secured his fame with the 1970 hit "The Thrill Is Gone,"
B.B. stands onstage before Muhammad Ali and a crowd of 80,000 on the continent his
ancestors left in chains and gives one of the most thrilling performances of his life. "The
King of the Blues" (B.B.), "Soul Brother #1" (James Brown) and other African-American
artists on the bill reveled in the return to their cultural motherland for a gala affair that was
attended by fans and journalists from all over the world.
The backstory around this perfonnance is rich. Behind B.B. is a large orchestra,
made up of core members ofB.B.'s touring band - pianist Ron Levy, drummer Sonny
Freeman and saxophonist Bobby Forte - plus studio musicians recruited (mostly) from
New York, including renowned session guitarist Larry Carlton. Directed by Hampton
Reese, B.B.'s longtime friend and musical tutor (you'll see him in his plaid sport coat
conducting the band), this collection of musicians achieved their amazing performance
after a single rehearsal in Kinshasa. Hampton wrote the charts for all the songs in the set,
and every musician was playing from those charts.
Of the musicians who played that concert from B.B.'s 1974 touring band, only
Ron Levy is still living. Here are some of his recollections of the unforgettable trip to
Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo) and their historic performance there:
To perform in Africa - the land of his ancestors, at this stadium event before
80,000 - plus crazed, hot, sweaty, dancing and bouncing heads and soulfully
pained hearts -- must have had a very special personal significance for B.B.,
as it did for us all. We all realized this was not just another gig. It was history,
good history. We were all very proud to be a part of it. As far as the set went,
we performed 8.B.'s most famous hits. I have to say, this was probably the
first lime this crowd ever heard - or heard of - B.B. King. but as usual he
left them wanting more, as well as an indelible memory of his sincere personal
    passion and deep-felt blues.
He definitely connected with them like the beloved king he is. If you're a
B.B. King fan, you are in for a rare treat with B.B, King Live in Africa '74. If this is
your introduction to the King of the Blues, you'll understand why he is so loved the
    world over.
    -Charles Sawyer
Charles Sawyer is the author of the first biography of B.B. King.
The Arrival Of B.B. King (Doubleday 1980, Da Capo 1982),
He teaches ""History Of Blues In America" at Harvard Extension School,
and leads his own blues band, 2120 South Michigan Avenue.

In 1978 while browsing the music department at a Sears, I grabbed a cassette with BB King's image on the front. I took a chance with my meager cash and took it home to listen to. It blew my mind and I have not been able to stop listening to him since. Unbelievable rhythm, crazy guitar that won't allow you to stay still. RIP King! And thank you for the gift that never gets old.

I was @ 16 or 17 & met him in my hometown of Memphis & he was doing a free show on Beale Street. (back then the legal age was 18 & they changed it to 19, 21 & back to 19, I'm pretty sure. It didn't matter to me because I was always old enough, lol! As fate would go, a lady who'd taken care of a few younger brothers of mine, for a year or so, was there at my house & we talked a lot. I saw her again years later, at a free BB concert on Beale & she knew him & introduced me to him! I loved it & he was a very nice guy! He signed an album & I just wish we could ALL see him again.

He created his own little funky scale. The BB King Box and never looked back or for anything else. He found perfection and twisted those notes into an infinity of expressed subtle siren calls. While other guitarists mow us down with machine gun riffs and blazing tour de force playing BB coaxed us into his happy world with a scale fragment. That’s the miracle of music!

I would like to salute concert promoter Bill Graham for cross pollinating contemporary music with his line ups at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Without his mixing of the genres many of us would simply not have been "turned on" to the blues by the originals like B B King. (Ken Burns episode on the Blues showed footage of B B and his men arriving at the Fillmore. He thought he was in the wrong place with all the hippies surrounding the place. Graham came out to the limo and welcomed him with open arms into the venue... the rest is history.)

I was lucky to get to see BB King when he played here in NZ. Watching this now I marvel at how he was able to keep the guitar work so spicy and interesting with such an economy of notes. In fact he really only moves from the one fretboard position as the song approaches the outtake. I know many "modern" players see this approach as so limited as they flash around the fretboard. Many of us look for our own "tone and sound" one way or another. There is no mistaking this man's playing on any day!!!!!

Got to see bb with my pops 5 years ago in a small venue in Turlock California one of the best memories I'll ever had it wasn't a concert it was a fucking experience I will never forget bb and how he made that crowd feel like it was a one on one concert long live the fucking king!! Blues is the most powerful music hands down true soul and passion

  • @shawnmcvey7789

Live at the Regal was a masterpiece but in this concert not only do you have a more experienced B.B. King, but he's still in his prime as a performer and by 1974 there were P.A.s that could actually enhance the performance for the audience and performers.
He came up before there were good live sound systems, so by the time that technology came around B.B. was ready to just dominate any stage he set foot on.
Luckily for generations of guitar players, he had no problem sharing that stage.

I was lucky, and my foreman at work managed to snag B.B. KING tickets at WESTBURY MUSIC FAIR, a super concert venue on Long Island, in Westbury, where he and I were doing some a/c system work. He talked the manager into 4 free tickets!!!! WOW!!! That was in 1982. Fantastic show! And he and I went to see B.B. the next year too,,,,,,,, FREEEEE!!!!!
