That's one beautiful survivor. Those 70-72 Monte Carlos were just terrific cars. They handled good, rode good, looked good.... I've always loved them.

The Gen 1 Monte Carlos are my favorite. Clean styling, tidy size; this one is gorgeous. Hearing it start sure brings back memories, my dad had a 1971 Biscayne with the same 350 2-bbl engine, and sounded exactly the same.

First, I LOVE that you entered from the passenger side and slid across the bench seat to the driver's position! And it certainly does idle as beautifully as it looks. That fan shroud, though....

Out of all the GM mid size luxury coups the Monte Carlo was the best bang for the buck and the reserved style was perfect.

It's a beautiful thing to have a bench seat that allows a family of 6 to be able to drive in style and dignity. You've just demonstrated yet another great benefit of the bench seat, by sliding in behind the steering wheel from the passenger side.
BRING BACK THE BENCH SEAT! Preferably covered in panty cloth fabric.

I've commented before about your fender skirted 72 MC, about our green one, etc.. Glad to see it again pulled out of the garage. So glad to have had one brand new in 72, along with many others. My Dad instilled the love I have for 50s, 60s, and 70s cars. I'm almost 65 , thankfully with a few under my belt. Love this car!

I absolutely love those early Monte Carlo Chevys. I had a 69 Grand Prix SJ and it was a wonderful car and even though the body was like the GP I prefer the Pontiac mostly because of the styling, interior and it seemed sportier than the Chevy but both are beautiful. My favorite of thise type of cars is the 67 thru 70 Buick Riviera. I never owned one but had friends that did and we traveled to many places in those cars and I always wanted one and still do

Had a 72 in forest green with black vinyl top. Turbo 400 on the back of a 402 4bbl. Stock was good for 16.5 mpg at 70. I added an MSD with the stock coil and improved that to 19+ at 75. Tall rear end 2.70 as I recall. I buried the 140 mph speedometer once while I was in North Dakota. Still had throttle left. I really miss that car. One of GM’s stellar performers !!

Thanks for sharing this video, which just popped into my youtube feed. In high school/college I had a 1972 Monte Carlo, and yes, the mulsanne blue paint but no vinyl top. It had the 350 2 bbl, 350 turbomatic transmission. One of my favorites because of the quality and style and also because of the memories.

Stupid rain! This review has been a long time coming, but it's going to be worth it. A lot of the videos on the first gen Montes treat them like muscle cars, when the reality is most were personal luxury or just stylish family cars. Your example is a wonderful piece of history- an iconic if somewhat misunderstood legend.

Hi Adam. I really like that Monte Carlo, especially with the rare fender skirts. 1800 miles is insane! Quite the deep fan shroud on that too. I owned a '71 C20 3/4 T 2WD, Custom Deluxe w/350 and Turbo Hydromatic . Only had 68K miles and all original. Out of the dozens of cars that I have owned from the '70's, that was my favorite sounding vehicle. I could listen to that all day. Just a smooth, deep, mellow rumble but not loud, or "tinny" or obnoxious. I think my 2nd favorite was a '72 F250 Camper Special w/390 and C6. 70K original miles and factory exhaust. Also had a great sounding stock exhaust. Currently my favorite exhaust has nothing to do with my cars but it's on my '07 45' diesel pusher motorhome with a Turbo Diesel Cummins 525 HP. The slight pitch of the turbo combined with the deep diesel rattle....Gotta love that sound!!. As always, great video, love the car and the discussion!!

The styling of the '72 Monte Carlo was stellar, and it would not have taken much more in appointments and refinements to have made it a stunning, over the top luxury sedan. It's reminiscent of the Bentley S1 Continental 2-door Fastback by H.J. Mulliner 1957.

A great car. I had a 1970 Monte Carlo in probably the early 1980's and I loved it. Mine was in pretty fair shape, but obviously not as nice as yours. I think I paid $800 for it back then, and it had 70 or 80k+ miles on it, as I recall. White with a black interior. Your car reminds me so much of mine...the upholstery fabric, vinyl top and such. Your comment about the engine placement was apt; had to be the biggest hood/trunk length ratio in American history...I'd forgotten how long the radiator hoses were on these things! Mine was also a 350 c.i. 2 bbl., and you're very correct on how well they moved at speed. I gave a friend a ride and he became alarmed at how fast we were going as I merged onto the interstate. Great video.

My first daily driver was my grandfather’s 1972 Olds Cutlass sedan. He gave it to my dad after he reached the age where driving was no longer a safe activity for him. I drove it for the last couple of years I was in high school and then my brother drove it after I went away to college. “Rocket 350” V8 with a 2 barrel carb and no positive traction. While it was a shadow of the 350’s just a year or two earlier it still had torque for days. My dad never could figure out why only the right rear tires seemed to be worn out after about 7k miles. Hmm… It’s interesting to see and remember how many parts GM cars shared across the brands. The door levels inside and out, dashboard, etc in the Monte Carlos have a lot of common with the Cutlass of the same year.

I think it would be great if you gave a presentation on various types of distributors and through your knowledge and expertise single out the ones you think are less problematic and/or superior. Lots of scenarios can end up like that. Dad buys a new car at 70 but dies suddenly. Mom doesn't drive but can't bear to part with his stuff. She lives 25 more years. The kids aren't into cars. To them it's just a non-running car with boxes piled up on it. For many reasons the estate is not settled for another five years. Now it's a non-running 31 year old car with 1200 miles. Somehow our friend finds out about it and resurrects the car and puts 600 miles on it over 10-15 years. If you search them out and follow every lead for years, you can find one too. It is a super-sweet car!

Beautiful example and nice to see it totally stock. Stylistically the front looks like a 1970 model and the rear more typical of a 1967/8 model, especially compared to other contemporaneous designs for 1972. Regardless a lovely car.
