Running Australia’s hardest 100km while needing a hip replacement

- MY NEMESIS: Meet Pete. He and I were cross-country rivals at school. I reckon I won more races than Pete, but I’m likely wrong. Twenty five years later, and too many laps of a basketball court, Pete’s on the verge of getting both hips replaced. Over a bottle of wine one night, we cooked up the idea of one last hurrah, one last run to see out the old, bone-on-bone hips. Heck, why not make it the hardest 100km race in Australia?! The wine worked. We signed up to Hut to Hut. Conjoined as a running pair, with a 22 hour cut-off, we set out to complete one of the hardest running loops on the continent. Can Pete make it? Who bloody knows.

This is one heck of a race folks. I'm back for 2025, all going to plan, and there are still bibs available for the solo and teams 100k laps...Get on it! Brilliant cause, mind bending terrain, and world class people. www.hut2hut.oscars100.com.au
The title is horrendous… had me thinking your hip was cooked!
Had Mr Peter Bruce as a teacher in 2019, he introduced the class to your videos and I’ve been watching ever since. Great to see him in a video!!!
"Life moves pretty fast if you don't look up mate" Beau Miles - 2024
Always a good day when Beaudy uploads
I know right. It’s been a second
I was just feeling super thankful that Beau dropped a banger
Beaudy uploady
Exactly!
This will probably get lost in the comments but, words can't explain how much I love watching your videos. The world would be a much better place if there were more people like you, Beau.
Inspirational bloke. Never shall I whinge about sore joints from work and sport, at the least I'll think about this machine to give me some motivation to keep on chugging.
"You lose a parent and you instantly become the next generation" send a shiver down my spine, such a powerful phrase.
And it’s so true. When my grandmother passed I suddenly became the generation of mothers, not children and that marked a huge shift for me. Different decisions.
There are absolutely ultra's and trail running after hip replacement! I had a total left hip replacement. After recovering and taking it slow, I've built back up to 40-50 mile weeks, and longer when prepping for anything over marathon distance. The key is this: The doctor will say "don't run" because it extends the life of the implant. So what? If your health suffers because you can't run, what's the point?? Instead, take it easy, make sure you're doing strength workouts, and build it back up. If it does deteriorate over time, again, so what? Have a revision done - At the point you'll need it, the technology will be even better. Don't let a replacement stop you!
Inspiring to hear
Classic used to be when you have a hip or joint replacement, you are locked in for at least another unless you get hit by a bus in the meantime.
The newer items are better, but the join of the new material is still not 100% like the original item it replaces, more so when it comes to impacts.
Well, Beau ... are YOU recovered from your recent illness? You pressed ahead far too long without knowing you were sick and I really hope you're on the mend. It's good to see you out and enjoying the grind.
I'm on the mend Sherry. This was 2.5 years ago also...
@@BeauMiles I was wondering whether you still have to wear those bloody face masks in Australia. Well, there you go.
9:25 you know you are a bit of a nut when Beau looks speechless into the camera :D
reaaaal ! that man is NOT easy to be made speechless, what a guy
Blimey! I just tried to walk 100km along the nice, flat, Thames Path. I made it to 50km...
Coromandel?
Youve successfully completed the first 50km - and youll knock off the rest - what a great achievement!
Mr. Pete is incredible and so are you Beau. You are the top content creator in TH-cam for me, Thank You
Machine! An absolut machine!
Whenever I am procrastinating or being lazy but wishing I wasn’t, a video from beau pops up and makes me slap myself around the face and get out of my own head. The videos themselves are all great, but the real magic is the effect they have on me and I’m sure others, to make us stop thinking and start doing.
Eagerly awaiting the next film ;)
Perfect...mates taking on personal challenges....accepting the physical and exploring the emotional...Great Stuff!! Ta Beau. Onya Pete.
This film touched my heart deeply.
Thank you Beau and Pete❤
The hip replacement can actually be what makes running again possible!
Goggins 2.0 incoming?
19:35 - How do you be open and vulnerable with your friends but not be a 'burden' Beau? Seems like you two are very close and do talk about difficult stuff.
I put this on and said to my girlfriend "you know Beau Miles right?" And she looked puzzled for a bit and went "isn't he the one who put his daughter in a bucket or something" 🤣🙂
I like this ben. That's the one
Love you Beau you bloody legend
Beau I’ve watched everyone of your videos and this is the first that’s moved me to tears. Calling Pete a warrior is an understatement, the determination to even consider attempting this with his issue and then having the spirit to go back for round 2 is completely heroic. Good on ya mate and cant wait for the next one.
bloody legends, both of yas
If you want to, you can absolutely run 100km---even 100mi, in the old money---with two replaced hips. But the wanting to is the thing that matters.
Puts a smile on my face when Beau uploads
I knew someone who had a hip replacement and he ran after it. Maybe not an ultra marathon but 10Ks etc. Hope he gets an optimal result.
Absolute fucking mad lads
I'm 45. Two young kids, and been running for a couple of years. I identify so much with Pete. I ran my first trail marathon a few weeks back, and now I dread the day when the cut-off sweeper of my running life taps me on the shoulder. Keep going Pete! Great job Beau.
I was a 4days/week climber, would travel the world to climb limestone (China, Spain, etc). I have peripheral neuropathy due to so much crimping limestone. Never thought I'd identify as anything, but a climber. The social circle can be amazing. The adventures stunning. I stopped climbing and have a new identity that doesn't cause further damage to my body. I decided that I wanted to do something more noble with my life than chase limestone. I got over it. I have a tree nursery now and harvest all of the tree seed out in the wild.
One can move on.
The end.. HOOOOLY! What an absolute machine Pete is.
I'm so doing this next year!! Thx Beau
i'll wait here 🤣
Yess!!
the best youtuber
Hi Beau, thanks for the upload :)
Pete, don't doubt yourself. I've had both of my hips replaced. When I was in the my 30's. Now I'm 45 and I'm the most active I've ever been. Gym workouts, lifting heavy weights. Long walks. Bike rides. Get through recovery and then go full on.
I’m always so amazed at equally how fragile and ridiculously resilient our bodies are
Yesss!! I thought this one was beautiful! Nature, grief, wacky Australians, it has it all! Super excited for a 2nd part!
I love the changes you made to this film since the secret screenings, Beau and Mitch. Beautiful footage, more banter, and an even more emotional film. Stunning work!
Love the videos beu big thank to to Mr graham to showing me your vids much love
Dude my hip does not need replacing yet and I never would have made it half as far. Well done and good luck with the surgery.
What action camera are you using? Those shots were too good!!!
Just when I thought Beau was the most inspirational person out there, he goes and introduces us to his mate. Pair of legends.
What an incredible man. Dad would be proud.
how beau doesnt have millions of subs is one of the 7 wonders of the world
What a vid! Pete is an absolute legend!!!
I know that Pete is a serious bloke which deserves a lot of good things. He is a true hero. Also you Beau for your beautiful uploads. I always sweat a tear watching your vids!
Hi Pete!
Pete is such a inspiration!!
Mate you’ll be back into running even with hip replacements with the mindset you have. Good job fellas!
You bloody ripper. You guys have much positivity. Looking forward to the next instalment.
That man has a warrior's spirit
Inspirational !!!
What a crazy man , but deadset inspiring.
And crscking vid as always Beau
Awesome stuff, fellas. About time you get your MAMIL on...no lycra necessary.
There are a lot of engineers and doctors working on improving artificial bones and joints, who knows, in a few years Pete might just do another 100km. There's a lot of hope for the future.
As always , I'm looking forward to the next film . Thanks Beau .
I just love how your films make me feel. I always feel more motivation to do something, to try something new, to adventure and to get after it. Thank you
Thanks for the unexpected Friday evening treat Beau 👌
Beautiful stuff mate! It was a gem of a short film and touching how you talked about life and loss with a good buddy. Have recently lost my last parent, my mum and it's been a surreal situation, to say the least! Well done Beau
I wince constantly watching Beau (and Friends) put themselves through it. I still watch, but mate I feel it. What an effort.
Making the brutal look beautiful. H2H is no joke. Love it gents.
Another one from the secret screenings! I still haven’t bitten the bullet yet but I’ve been heavily considering the 50km race ever since the screening night. I’m more of a bushwalker than a bushrunner and I definitely don’t have the legs for the full 100 but I reckon 50 might be the sweet spot. Cheers Beau you bloody ripper!!
What an absolute champion. Here's to you, Pete. 🍺
My 91 year old mom just had her second hip done. Always a life changer.
Love this! The most accurate portrayal of Hut to Hut. Pete is amazing and I look forward to attempt 2!
Such a great event, looking forward to giving it a second shot in 2025
That was great! ...The friendship & beauty of the run mingled in the midst of a deep and rugged challenge...
With a cliff hanger of "what happens next" thrown in to boot! Looking forward to the next film already Beau! ❤
Looking forward to getting it you ya!
3:41 is like a scene from a movie! A midnight precession, illuminated only by the lights they hold. Beautiful shot.
Great video, and I felt for your mate with emotion as I watched Beau...
Looking forward to the next instalment.
What a tough bustard Pete is
Great video Beau. Good on ya, Pete, for having a crack at something most people don't even dream of doing. Thanks for being brave and sharing the journey with the rest of us. Can't wait for the next film.
"He decided to go around again".
Damn I love ultra running. That's the spirit.
Beautiful video and I wish Pete a speedy recovery
i feel like i would be a much different, and probably much better person if i had a friend like Beau. i think we all need a little Beau in our lives tbh. what a unique and amazing an inspirational man.
thank you for sharing your stories and your wisdom with us, mate.
This is seriously inspiring me to sign up for my first ultra here in the UK. The Fellsman. Largely pathless route, self navigation, lots of bog hopping. You’d be all over it!
How do you find friends who do such adventures with you? I want that, I need that!!🙈😎
Boy, that was a difficult (but wonderful) watch. Gosh!
Loved the vlog. This is a race I’ve always wanted to do and the footage shown seals it.
Give those hips one last hip hip hooray! My dad just had his done. I have hEDS, id love all my joints replaced! lol
Pete is the living embodiment of the term 'Hard man'.
What a bloke! And how beautiful to see you going through his emotions as well Beau. Great film, as always.

You are so interesting to listen to mate. Love watching your videos. How about you run and visit The Weedy Garden 😆🫵🏻🎥🇳🇿😄👍
Hey Beau, when are you going to organize a run event? That organization would be good video
How good was the scenery, fantastic!
On ya, Pete.
Everybody needs a friend like Beau!
Jeeesh, the pain. That's a hard guy.
