Agreed, as a Massage Therapist with Private practice with rare personal referrals and organic in person chats that yield paying clients, close to 100% of my new clients are a result of my IG ads
it's called social proofing, it works for your social perception which directly or indirectly impacts your self worth. Women are the best bait for that, if they see a guy with many likes on his posts then he will be "validated" where as someone with no friends / likes gets left out. So to say it "shouldn't" have an impact on your self worth is meaningless when indirectly it still can.

I think a lot of people just don't boost properly.
It works for me and I boost ads every month

I have the same problem! I believe my topic (food and recipes) it’s too general, than everyone can be my ideal audience 😪
