- At the end of a fractious, bumpy and ill-disciplined conference Liz Truss tried to banish the U-turns and pull the party together with a brief speech about one main idea - “growth, growth and growth.”

They also made use of government loans for businesses for their own little vanity projects. Their loans were all written off. Owen Patterson was paid £500,00] by Randox to lobby the government and Randox got a fat contract too.
This is all the Tories ever do. They redirect public funds into private pockets serving no one but themselves and their donors.

It isn't anti growth it's anti inequality, it's anti neglect of the NHS and pro government working for the working and middle class and not just the ultra wealthy.
To be fair, we should actually stop sacralising growth. We have already hit the boundaries of what our planet can take in terms of extraction and pollution. We need to focus much more on a fairer distribution of resources now, else we the economy will literally collapse in the next few decades.

Extremely high by what standards? When I signed up for my mortgage, I was checked that I could still afford it if interest rates hit 10%. It wasn't that long ago that interest rates were 7.6%. It's just how things are.

It is too late to prevent the problems that Liz Shepherd mentioned and has been too late for many years. Even if you stopped all emissions tomorrow, and that is clearly impossible of course, the climate will keep on changing for hundreds, if not thousands of years, rain forests keep on being cut down without any thought for the consequences, especially in Brazil and poverty will always exist as it has for just about as long as humans have existed. And that is not to mention population growth - it took thousands of years for the human population to reach reach 1 billion in 1800 - but only 223 years to reach 8 billion - and nuclear war, the threat of which once thought gone, has come back with a vengeance with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Out concerns are really a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted - but not only has the horse long since bolted, we have not even shut the door yet!

@@oddities-whatnot That's utter rubbish (the second part, I agree with the first!). Look at the energy crisis plans, Labour would have funded the energy package entirely with the excess windfall profits the company's are making from this money having to be paid to them.
The conservatives are funding it with slashing public services and borrowing, probably, but who can say for sure since they haven't even bothered to cost their plan yet!
Even if what you said was true I'd rather have record levels of borrowing actually give us public services worth the name again instead of record levels of borrowing purely to line the top 1%'s pockets.

she hasn't stopped energy prices going up you can still get a bill a bill way over the cap they think they have set the price per kilowatt you are charged has not been touched you run a factory or a shop with ten freezers or a pub you will pay way more then her cap its semantics

and no-one serious still believes that tax cuts for higher earners creates growth anyway. If you want a test case for how the Truss/Kwarteng usually works in practice, take a look at Kansas over the last ten or so years where they tried this approach as an experiment - it led to a collapse in government tax revenue and a squeeze on disposable income that shrank the economy and led to a credit rating downgrade for the state. It’s economically illiterate and especially dangerous for the UK right now when the economy’s already in such a weak position.
