- This is a demonstration of how to make a Violin Mute. The material is a plastic sponge that does not make a mute. When the material is rubber hard enough the mute works. However, you can have an idea on how to make a Violin mute.

An even more simple method that I use is to get a packet of magnets from Hobby Lobby. You get about four of them for a buck and change but they are pretty strong. I put one magnet on each side of my bridge. voile! Want more mute? add two more magnets. I also use the magnets to anchor the music to the music stand and to hold music books open.; I keep six of them in my case all the time.
