    Thanks for posting this! My 96 civic was missing on 2 cyliders and I seemingly had strong sprak at each boot when I would pull them out as you did. Never occurred that the spark was leaking to ground inside the tube! My car runs great now with a new set of wires!!!!

      Awesome man! I'm glad the video is helping some of you guys out. I'm going to pin your comment at the top so maybe you'll end up helping someone else as well. I don't think I really highlighted in the video, at least not in detail, that the spark could jump around outside of the boot in other scenarios like yours where the boot is faulty. It is apparent after I removed the foreign object that this is exactly what was happening, but others should be aware that just an old boot itself could cause the same issue, foreign object or not. So thanks for pointing that out, and thanks for the support!

      Guns&Cars yes thank you that explains a lot I replaced the thermostat because I was losing all the water in my radiator after a long drive but that didn’t solve the problem, I noticed the water was very dirty inside like paint particles bits of pieces that would float up gushing all the water out when I had it on idle, so I think that’s what it is, would a radiator flush help? Or should I replace the radiator or is there more to the process? Thanks for replying n the info! My engine is shaking like a washer machine so I believe the heat had damaged the ignition coil packs and maybe even the spark plugs so I’m buying all that tomorrow to see if the shaking will stop if it does the radiator will be my next detail.

    My 97' Odyssey 4 cyl. started missing. The plug wells were filling with oil from leaking gaskets. Sopped it out with paper towels and long surgical forceps. That was it. Runs perfect. Easy to do when needed. FREE.

    • @RRtradestar
      @RRtradestar 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im hoping you changed the valve cover/ spark plug gasket and actually fixed the issue rather than putting a band aid on it. Did the problem ever come back?

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      He said easy to do when needed so I'm assuming he does it when it fills back up as opposed to replacing the gasket. He may not own a torque wrench or other tools necessary to do the job and buying those tools or paying a shop to do it may not be a better option for him than soaking it up and topping off the oil. Even if he did have the tools, a $20 gasket may mean the difference between him being able to pay his bills or not. I'm not saying he's poor, but you never know.

    Thanks man, sharp observation of the spark coming through side of tube. I picked up a sedan at a nice price, with a #1 cylinder misfire, After watching your video I took a closer look at the #1 plug wire. Spark arching out the side of the tube, swaped in a new plug wire, no more misfire. Fixing the car first night I owned it feels good. I was going to dig into the valve clearances, as I thought I was dealing with a compression issue, since fuel and spark SEEMED good. God bless you.

      @@BuckeyeBallistics Definitely. I managed to get the O.E. distributor he swapped the China one out for. I suspect there is nothing wrong with the O.E. Honda distributor since I found the wire problem, with your help of course. I been into Honda's for nearly a decade, and never seen a completely dead cylinder due to a "cracked" spark plug wire tube. I use "cracked" very loosely since the wire looks new and has no visible damage, however you can smell that burnt plastic smell where the spark was arching out of.

    My first Honda is this exact model. Just recently purchased it to turn into a dirt track "racer". Got her running after 8 or 9 yearsish sitting and was running great and now I 'm watching more youtube.
    One thing about these cars.. ... they are easy as hell to work on. Everything is right here, where I can find it and not hidden under a bunch of shit.
    300,000 miles and going back right now to find what my problem is.
    Great vid and talking in this like you and I are hanging and drinking some beers/working on your fucking car

      Yeah it's super easy to work on. I have worked on some real nightmare vehicles. When I popped the hood on this one, I was like, that's it? Sweet!
      Always wanted to do the fwd dirt track racing thing, then I learned (after research) that you're definately going to invest more than you're going to win, and that everbody cheats doing secret mods and shit to the cars, that you will never win unless you cheat too to keep up with the cheaters. I'm way to competitive and honest to deal with that shit. I'm sure it's loads of fun though.

    Its supposed to go onto the plug, don't remove that. Just invert it back into the boot. I had this happen a couple times when replacing spark plugs. It simply comes out when removing them from the spark plug, kinda like an outie belly button, just push it back into the boot and all is well!

    Hey I'm having the same problem but on cylinder 1. I have changed out the whole Distributor, spark plug wires,spark plugs,fuel injectors,fuel rail with the fuel pressure regulator. I'm getting spark and fuel. I have no air leaks. The timing is right. I have no clue what can I being missing. 1995 honda accord ex vtec motor. I also did a compression test and my compression is 185,180,180,185 any ideas would help thanks

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Intake manifold gasket leak can cause misfire due to running lean. Also the head gasket could cause that but you said you have good compression. But if it's a very mild leak, you may need to do a leakdown test to find it. I would pull the plug and look down in that cylinder and see if it looks any different in there than the others, especially if it looks "washed" or cleaner, then it's definately head gasket due to coolant getting in there; unless unburnt fuel is washing it. Improper plugs or plug gap, but if you kept replacing all this stuff and the missfire persisted on cylinder 1 and only cylinder 1, I wouldn't suspect plugs. One last thing: You said you are getting spark and fuel. So you're getting strong spark still on cylinder 1 and strong fuel for sure? If so, then that means the fuel is getting burnt, just not properly, which rules out cylinder washing from unburnt fuel. Sometimes higher mileage vehicles get hot spots on the pistons or head or valves due to carbon build up, causing premature ignition which would technically be knock, but it feels like misfire. If this is the issue, running higher grade gas will combat it. 89 might work, if not try 91-93. Also fix anything causing a check engine light like failing sensors, as they control air/fuel mixture and sometimes ignition (newer cars). Let me know if you figure anything out and good luck.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I recommend you read the other comments and my replies to them. Everything that could cause a misfire has been discussed by myself and some of the other commenters. Could be the wires, could be the distributor cap or rotor, could be a gasket, etc. Please read the comments for an entire list. If you have *multiple* misfire, it could very likely be the distributor cap and rotor. The contact patches become corroded and can cause multiple misfire. I do have a video replacing a distributor cap and rotor on a Ford Probe, very similar process. It's actually easier to do on a Honda like yours. New cap and rotor and new wires are the pretty standard "tune up". I would definately recommend a tune up on a car that is misfiring and all 3 should cost less than $100 total. Just make sure you put the wires on in the right order. Good luck, let me know how it goes.

      Dis = distributor? Could be the injector, or something wrong with that cylinder. I'd do a compression test on that cylinder and see if it's good or not- can get a compression tester on amazon for like 20 bucks. If compression is good then I'd get the injector tested or just replace it- of course it could be in the wiring running to the injector as well. If the compression is bad on that cylinder then you got a few other things to check...

      Check the distributor rotor and cap. If the contact points are erroded or corroded, this will cause a misfire. Also try running the next grade up of gas. Older higher mileage engines sometimes start to misfire on 87 because they develop hot spots in the combustion chamber due to carbon buildup. The next grade up in gas will help combat this, if that is the issue. Other than that, check the compression. There are a few more tips in the comment section as well, like the intake manifold gasket for example.

      @@gamercat7004 I would just try 89. If that doesn't work then try 91 but it shouldn't need that much. It's too much to explain here but octane rating works in correlation with spark timing. 91 isn't any better of a gas than 87, it just depends on what the car requires to run properly due to the timing. But still, this is just a maybe. It might work, but honestly it's one of the least likely fixes, but obviously easy and inexpensive to try.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics

      How bad of a misfire? If confirmed good spark, then fuel delivery problem, bad gaskets, compression. I would check compression to see if you have a bad head gasket or just overall bad compression. Check fuel pressure and injector pulse. Try running 1 grade higher gas if high mileage; sometimes they experience detonation from carbon buildup. Could be the intake gasket as others have mentioned. Start with compression test. You can get a comoression tester for like 20 bucks on Amazon or Harbor Freight. Check for clean oil first. If it's peanutbuttery in color, bad headgasket- compression test not needed.

      You put it back on and it won't start now? Well as you could see in my video, mine still ran so I'm assuming (especially because you're watching this video) that yours was running pretty rough to begin with- so when you removed it the car didn't have enough spark across enough cylinders to stay running. Assuming you put it back on and it still won't start, my guess would be that either you didn't get it put back on all the way (press down very hard), or you damaged the boot or wire when you removed it (brittle from age, not your fault). Sounds like you're due for new wires like I was, and probably spark plugs as well. In the meantime try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes to re-set the system and she might start for you.

      No and honestly if anything, it's usually the other way around with older higher mileage cars- cars that brand new ran on 87 octane may require 89 or 91 octane to run right after many years and miles have gone by. This is due to excessive carbon buildup in the engine cylinders causing a higher compression ratio necessitating the need for higher octane gas. Or similarly, hot spots from the carbon deposits creating detonation as well (early ignition/misfire).

So if my code read p1399 with a misfire in any cylinder it couldn't be the gasket leaking air because there's no code saying or implying that it's the head gasket? • @BuckeyeBallistics

      P1300 is ignition coil #1, whereas this car in this video does not have ignition coils because it is a distributor system. Either the coil is bad, the connection is bad, the harness (wiring) is bad, or the ecu (computer) is bad. P1300 means the ecu isn't getting a signal for that cylinder and those are the possible causes. It would most likely be a bad coil. Could try replacing it for around $30-$40 usually. You can test them and the connection but since you are asking me how to fix it I'm assuming that's beyond your abilities/resourses.

      @@crazye3572 Yeah and I read you other comments you mistakenly left on the pinned comment. When you stated that your engine shut off when you pulled one of the plug wires, and just stated on the other comment that it is shaking bad... sounds like you are only running on 2 cylinders instead of 4. So when you pulled one that was firing, you were only running one 1 cylinder at that moment and it can't run like that. So, sounds like you have a massive misfire. Now, overheating (as you mentioned) can cause head gasket failure or a warped head, which will allow coolant into the cylinders, which will cause a misfire. This would make the car run rough, as it cannot fire on whichever cylinders are getting coolant into them. If you have a bad head gasket or head due to overheating it, no amount of parts are going to fix your problem until the head/head gasket are fixed. Generally a compression test is performed to comfirm a blown gead gasket or warped head. Also, if fog is comming out of the exhaust, that is a dead giveaway. You can also pop the oil cap off and look into the engine. If you see anything that looks like peanutbutter or mud in there, then that's also a dead giveaway, as there is coolant in the oil causing this. You may be able to see this on the oil dipstick also, but not always, or when you drain the oil it will be milky/muddy looking. You need to find out if this is your problem first before you start throwing parts at it. Like when you stated you replace the thermostat because you were losing coolant. A thermostat could never cause loss of coolant. Now the thermostat *seal* could, as in a small leak, but that's it. And a radiator wouldn't cause coolant loss either unless it was leaking. Something has to either be leaking and letting it pour out onto the ground, or you have a head/head gasket issue that is letting it into the engine and being burnt up or mixed with the oil, or both.

      There are a lot of things that could cause a misfire. It would help if I knew the year/make/model and mileage. If your car has a distributor for example, I would first suspect a distributor component, ignition coil, or ignition control module since you say misfire on "all cylinders". It would also be extremely helpful to know the exact code the car is throwing....

      Did it just hapen all of the sudden out of nowhere? It is it something that has just gradually gotten worse? Is it constant? Does it do it under all driving conditions? (Idle, light throttle, heavy throttle, cruising) If you can pull each plug like I did in the video and verify whether or not you have reliable spark from each cylinder it would really help, and it's better to do this at dusk or dark to visually see the spark. Just don't zap yourself. If you have less than desireable spark from one or more, it is an ignition component issue. If you have great, consistant spark on all 4, then there is an issue elsewhere. Like a fuel problem, vaccum leak, or internal issue such as a skipped timing tooth. Do the rpms stay low even if you floor it from a stop? If they do then it is stuck in a higher gear. A video of the issue would help...

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christina Dewi If you've already changed the plugs and wires, and you're sure the wires are in the correct order and securely snapped down on both ends, then you will want to check the distributor cap and rotor. If you open it up and there is corrosion on the metal contact points, this is likely your problem. A faulty or clogged injector could cause this also, but since it's 2 cylinders, that's unlikely. Check the cap and rotor first. Another guy posted below that his intake manifold gasket was leaking and caused a missfire, so that is possible as well. But start with the distributor cap and rotor, after verifying correct plug wire order, and that both ends of all wires are securely snapped in place. Also, make sure the spark plugs are properly gapped. Feel free to comment back.

      Ok so you have a cylinder #1 missfire. Did you check the distributor cap and rotor? Could also be faulty injector, bad head gasket/low compression, bad intake manifold gasket, or vaccum lines. You can use the screwdriver method to check the injector, or simply move that injector to another cylinder to see if the missfire moves to that cylinder. Perform a compression test to see if there is low compression on that cylinder, indicating either a bad head gasket or other issues with that cylinder. A cheap compression tester can be aquired from Harbor Frieght or Amazon. I would start by checking the distributor cap, see if the #1 cylinder electrode is worn or corroded. Then I would confirm whether or not the injector is bad using one of the methods I mentioned. 3rd, I would check the compression. One of these 3 things is most likely your problem, considering you have replaced the plugs and wires. If all 3 of those tests come back fine, intake manifold gasket or vaccum lines could be the culprit.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No spark on all cylinders? If you're getting fuel pulse from the injectors, but no spark on all cylinders, then it has to be the distributor. If there's literally zero spark at all, but getting fuel sprayed, then the distributor itself has failed. If you are getting some weak spark on all cylinders (assuming the plugs are ok), then it's the cap and rotor on the distributor. If you are getting some weak spark on only some cylinders and no spark on others, it's either the cap and rotor, or the wires, or both. I keep mentioning IF you are getting fuel spray from the injectors, because if you aren't getting fuel either, then it's a sensor not allowing the car to give fuel or spark, like a knock or crank sensor for example.

      That's the throttle body, I just twisted it open. The same thing happens when you push down the gas pedal; I just did it manually from under the hood. If you have an electronic throttle body instead of a cable driven one like this (litterally a cable runs from the throttle body to the gas pedal), then you won't be able to do this manually like I did. I bought it back from the guy a year later when he bought a new car, after he basically ran the civic into the ground the whole time and beat it all up. Payed 300 this time because the transmission was shifting all messed up at this point. Turns out it just needed a fluid line replaced and had practically ran out of transmission fluid, causing the rough shifting. $30 part and some fluid and then I sold it again for 1000. This guy drove it for a year and then it spun a rod bearing, the end lol.

    • @Peter_Riis_DK
      @Peter_Riis_DK 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Guns&Cars
      First of all, that rubber sleeve is not from a spark plug socket. Secondly, you tore it off leading me to believe that it was the lining of the plug boot turned inside out. And thirdly, there's no surprise in that a defective boot causes misfire. But I gather you're a young lad still learning, so good luck and Godspeed. 😜

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if you watched all the video without skipping, and payed attention, that it is very clear the piece I removed was not part of the boot at all. None of the others had that piece, and I didn't "tear" it out. It was fused together from the heat of the engine and being in there for god knows how long. I could see when I squeezed it that it seperated away from the inner wall of the boot in some spots. It was just fused together further up, out of sight. Then it "popped" out, not tore off. There was no tear marks if I remember correctly, it was a solid ring of rubber that was not part of the boot. If it wasn't the rubber piece from a spark plug socket, then what the hell was it? It was not part of the boot. It was indeed a foriegn object, and indeed a "suprise" cause for a missfire. "Leading you to believe"? So even you're not sure, in your own words. So if you're not sure, then why are you telling me I'm wrong? I think you assumed, and I think you are wrong.

    • @Peter_Riis_DK
      @Peter_Riis_DK 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guns&Cars
      That rubber sleeve looks pretty torn to me. That's what the jagged edges tell me anyway. But what do I know, right. 😵

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok first off, it does look just like the rubber piece from a spark plug socket. Google it, there are several different designs, but that is what it looks like to me. I re-watched the video after my last comment. You can see when I squeeze it that it is free from the inner wall of the boot, except for all the way up in there where it is fused together. What I was trying to say was this: Other than a very small section of it, if you push those "jagged edges" back together, then you have a perfect tube. If it was somehow a "sleeve" or something inside the boot, being part of it, then I don't think a symetrical ring like that would pop out. I would think it would tear, and only a portion of it would tear out, not a whole symmetrical ring popping out like that. I still disagree, I do not believe it is part of the boot. And here's another key point to back that. If it were some sort of inner lining, which would thus be designed to slide over the spark plug, then tell me why it didn't freely slide over the plug when I put it back on, and then why it was holding onto the damn plug afterward so tightly? Did you see how hard I had to pull on it to get it off of the plug? It wouldn't attatch itself so snugly to the plug if it was part of the boot which is designed to install and be removed from the plug with miniml effort, like the other boots. If it was part of the inside of the boot which slides over the plug, it would have done just that and not hung up like that. But regardless, let's use your theory, that it is part of the boot turned inside out. That would be a surprise! That is not supposed to happen! Either theory is a surprise if you ask me, neither would be an ordinary occurance.

      Well then you need to check the distributor cap and rotor. Pop the cap off and if there is corrosion on the metal contact points of the cap or rotor, there you go. This is the most likely cause for a mifire on all cylinders, unless you're joking and saying it's dead lol.

    • @BuckeyeBallistics
      @BuckeyeBallistics  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you say only when warmed up, you mean it runs fine when cold, then considerably worse when warmed up right? Cause it takes a minute for a check engine light to come on after it is reset. Sonifnit literally runs worse when warmel, I would still say check the distributor first, but if it doesn't do it until it warms up, you got me wondering about a few other things. With it not doing it until it warms up, it could be the elctrical components inside the distributor itself failing as they heat up. I suppose even very worn plug wires could do the same in theory, but very unlikely. I would pull a couple wires like I did in the video when cold, and then again when hot to compare not only spark strength, but consistancy. If you get weaker spark or inconsistancy when it's hot, then it's almost certainly the distributor. If you have strong and consitant spark when cold and hot, then it's an issue with the engine, like a bad gasket or dirty or damaged pistons/rings causing detonation. I would think you would get a knock sensor code though if it was the latter. Start with checking the spark strength cold/hot.
