  • A seized luxury campervan, a raid on a politician’s home, and two arrests. The latest twists in Police Scotland’s investigation into SNP spending wouldn’t seem out of place in an Ian Rankin novel. John Connolly speaks to Andrew Neil about the SNP's implosion and what this could mean for independence.

Neoliberalism is the ideology that has brough the world to its knees, creating vast inequality as it was intended to, in order to transfer wealth to the rich. In doing so it has imperilled the existence of the planet. The Scots rightly concluded they wanted to reject it, hence successive SNP election victories. Independence will happen in the end. The extreme right nationalists of England can then fight amongst themselves and ruin the remains of the union, which they have been doing without let up since 1979. No, make that 1900.

And the more scum like Andrew Neil pile on the superior attitude the more Scottish people are seeing the union for what it is English colonialism and the theft of Scotland's resources and our taxes. The English know that without Scotland's money and resources, their debt of 2.8 trillion pounds will increase to the point of bankrupting England. @Doreen Hollywood Alex Salmond the week before was on the ball with every answer. And that is the point with krankie, she didn't answer a question. Apart from the 52 times she didn't know, couldn't remember, had no recollection, she would begin an answer and within 3 or 4 words give it the "layt me just see" and go off round the houses for what she thought might be long enough and stop. And that statement about whether a meeting was a meeting if it was only three people, that ended with her saying minutes weren't taken at meetings was laughable. But perhaps minutes were taken of her grilling and acted upon. I have not a lot of time for politicians, but some annoy me more than others, enter Nicola.

Remember when the SNP was "short of money", before the "missing £700,000" was highlighted, Peter and Nicola kindly gave a LOAN to the SNP of £107,620. NOW this was about the same time that Peter was buying a Palace in Portugal. Nicola never thought it odd that as well as buying a property Peter had over £100K to lend to her SNP. As an Englishman in his 60s Scottish Education was always lauded as the TOP in the UK. Indeed 20 years ago near TOP in Europe. NOW bottom in UK and near bottom in Europe. That is true for everything in Scotland under SNP Government. Nicolas only claim to success is the "Free Cardboard Box with Babies Essentials" that Nicola said on TV, "and the Box can be used as a Cot". SNP Proud of encouraging young parents to put there baby to sleep in a Cardboard Box. That is Nicolas FAME "SNP ENCOURAGES SCOTS to Put Their Baby in a Cardboard Box"
I think any other Political Party can use that on their Election Campaigns from now on.
Ladbrokes will not give Odds on How Long in Prison Nicola will get!

Quite a good analysis of the situation by Andrew Neil - I would agree with most of it. We are both Scottish and I remember him well from our days at Glasgow University. The difference between us is that he is a unionist and I am a Scottish nationalist.
I fell out with the SNP several years ago. One of the main reasons was the unilateral decisionto limit the path to independence to referenda. The former policy was to contest general elections and once a clear majority was obtained they would take their seats at Westminster and present a bill for Scottish independence. That route is perfectly legitimate in my view and is now the only hope for independence. In the event of Westminster refusing the bill, then they would be fully within their rights to withdraw and set up a Scottish government
The truth is the SNP have lost their "bottle" and the membership have been duped into accepting a whole raft of policies (like joining the European Union, joining the UN, NATO etc) which should be taken AFTER independence. That too is a change from the early days.
I tried to correspond with Nicola Sturgeon but she stopped replying after one letter. I'm glad to see the back of her, although I guess a lot of the hou-ha about the £600,000 may subside to nothing in the end. That is being taken up by unionist "red top" papers like the Sun and the Mail to smear the national movement whether it is true or not.
Interesting comment about the border - I assume Andrew Neil knows but it's already there and has been since 1237 when it was settled between Henry III and Alexander II. If you look at an OS map you will see it clearly marked as a national boundary.

I’ve no idea if there’s a connection with the current troubles of the SNP- but the strange way in which the construction of the Edinburgh rapid transit system was mismanaged is surely an indication that something has been seriously wrong north of the border for years.

When Sturgeon first appeared, one of my Scottish friends of over fifty years said, “None of us can bear that mendacious little tinpot dictator. She has only one possible attribute: as far as I know, she isn’t Salmond. She’ll meet a sticky end when her astonishing arrogance is punctured.”
And Lo! It came to pass. Poor Scotland: it now has someone even dimmer, if that’s possible: but probably not for long. 😥😥
