I've been really excited to start art school over, Marc. This is Justin (not sure if you remember me from way back in the beginning days of art school haha) but I've drawn more in the recent month than in the last few years...a lot more! I really am focusing and trying my best to become a professional artist! It's a life long dream that I will achieve and I can't thank you enough for all your help, education and support! Much love to you, man! Keep on the awesome videos!!!
Hell yeah Justin! That's awesome to hear man! I saw a message on IG I'll check that out soon! (I've been levelling up my builder skills renovating our living room for a change so that's been keeping me extra busy!)
@@YTartschool my wife and I need to level up our carpentry with our home haha! I'm excited though, Marc. My art passion has been reinvigorated. I decided to restart the art program so I can really solidify all the fundamentals in basics that you teach. I can already see improvements in forms of my gesture drawings and understanding of the human form. I'm more excited to begin perspective and environmental work as my dream is to be an environmental concept artist. I'm glad to hear you are doing well!
8 h total for this masterpiece jeez after all theese years i still suck but thank you for all the inspiration ,tutorials and motivation you always be the best for me
8 hours is really impressive for the piece you made! It not only shows how good you are of a planner, but your skill that you spent for the past 20+ years
Last year in January, I set a New Year’s resolution to publish at least 1 art project to social media. I currently have 10 projects published on places like Instagram and Deviantart and I’m just about to start a new one. Your videos gave me the motivation and passion for art. Thank you!
As someone who constantly struggles with "Do I want to draw more 3D rendered, or more cell shaded, more semirealistic or more anime-stylized stuff", thus jumping between these and struggling with any and all approaches, these cellshading process videos are always nice, thanks! Ps. This is also my weekly request for more weekly art stream videos!
To anyone that fears painting on the wrong layer: choose the move tool (V) in Photoshop and check "auto-select" in the tool options (or hold CTRL). Clicking on the canvas should take you to the right layer. Though I doubt that will even work with Marc's 2000 layers... 🤣 The painting is awesome!
Dunno how much help this will be for your particular work flow, Marc, but I've managed to condense/consolidate layers. My method below: From the bottom, up, for any individual character or piece, however you wanna do it. Base color layer (one big universal blob for the whole shape) > Clipping Masks, one layer for each individual thing you're coloring, i.e. one for the hair, one for the eyes/teeth/small organic bits, one for the shirt, one for the pants, etc etc > Above all of those, a clipped _folder_ containing all the shading. All solid shading on one layer, all gradient shading on one layer, etc. The little images on each layer? You can ctrl+click those to automatically select any given section of colors to isolate them quickly. Then you're only shading those bits. You can shade sayyy the shirt and the pants on the same layer without ruining your work on any other given part of the piece. > Lighting on a clipped layer above the shading folder. Same method, ctrl+click on a given clipped flat color layer, do your lighting, ctrl+click another clipped flat color layer, etc. Do effects from there. One thing I like to do is make sure base color layer is whatever color is going to take up the majority of the figure or piece I'm working on. Then, when I want to apply the above methods, I ctrl+click the base color block, then ctrl+alt+click all the clipped things to remove them from the selection. And the nice thing is I can do things like blush and subsurface scattering on a clipped layer just above the base color block if I make said color block the flesh tone. Anyway, this process can take 60+ layers down to like 20 or fewer cuz you're not doing individual shading/lighting layers for each and every color. Cheers~!
I admire Marc because I followed how his worked keeps improving making me realize I can and will improve it just takes time and when or not you actually want to
I can say digital coloring is not for the faint of heart. It requires practice and lots of patience. Awesome process by the way Marc, way to start the year!
Yo Marc just want to appreciate what you do. You boosted my improvement in these last 2/3 years I can now draw characters from imagination and know a lot of anatomy. All the studies I do are based on your lessons and I just ordered an XP Pen Deco 2 XLW, to start off my digital art journey and I cant wait to keep improving hust letting you know your Yt art school is a one in a million gem. Keep up what you do and have a nice year.
Hi Marc, happy new year! I got the Art School Program last year, but life got in the way and I could only get done with Term 1. I can already see improvement in my art and I'm so excited to continue and draw more! Thank you, thank you!!
What an amazing painting to kick off the year! I also really like how you showed glimpses into some of the techniques. Like when we could see your hands irl and how you were shading on a lasso'd section of the drawing.
Wow this is amazing! Purchased your art school program and have been learning a lot. Always thought I was one of those people that just couldn’t draw. Still in Term 1 but I’m really learning to draw shapes and it’s cool to see where I might end up at the end of the program. Thanks Marc!
This is Awesome! Do you think you can make a dedicated video on just the soft shadow part of the process. so we can see in depth what your process is that we can follow along with maybe? 🙏🙏
This showing of the entire process is very much appreciated, and by chance exactly what I was working on. '^^ Glad to see such a nice video early into the year.
Long time subscriber, first time commenting (I think) lol. I love your work, workflow, and consistency! Excellent piece! Very inspiring. I cannot wait until my Cintiq is fixed so I can give this an honest shot. Thanks for sharing your golden nuggets Marc! Happy New Year! 🫡 🖌️ 🎉🏆
I always love your content, sir. You're such an inspiration to all of us. It would be cool if you ever had a chance to let us know about the struggles you're going through now with "art," not personal life, and the struggles you went through to get where you are right now. How did you overcome it all and what keeps you pushing forward. Thank you again for being part of this world!
Its going to be my favorite illustration so far like its so dynamique ! AND the light ???? Im so addicted to this !!! u gave me a lot of motivation Thank you again Marc ! Happy new year !!
Je regardais tes vidéos sur le cel-shading ces derniers jours en me disant que je voulais essayer, tu parles d'une coincidence! 10/10 comme d'habitude!
A small detail, but I think the earrings were an excellent choice to sell the sideways motion of the drift. It's hard to convey that with a mostly symmetrical image like you get with a car. Nice job 👏
Interesting you started with the AO and not directional shading, it makes perfect sense but just one of those things that never occurred to me. As soon as I get to shading I’m worrying about where the light is going to go
Great picture! The only thing I don't understand is the debris. Having stuff flying around the cockpit while you're racing would be a dangerous distraction.
Would it be possible for you to upload short videos showing a time lapse from blank canvas to lines for each piece of art in this kind of video, into an unlisted playlist or something. No commentary or anything, just so we can see more of the construction for each piece. I find these kinds of videos really helpful for seeing where my construction can be improved or where it's wrong. Looking forward to another year of videos, thanks.
I think you did great job capturing movement and her emotions in this piece. 🎉 This is how I imagined Riley from the book Pretty Little Psycho by R.E. Bond. She lives for the adrenaline of a street race, protects herself with a baseball bat, and falls in love with her best friend Luna.
You can paint it manually fairly quickly but I'm using the outer glow layer style in Photoshop :) I showed how to do it in the other tutorial with the DBZ characters so I figured I wouldn't mention it this time, but I probably should've since I'm now writing this lol
This was great to watch! Thank you for sharing this! Also just got access to the Art School course, which I will be doing over the course of this year! So I am quite excited up my art game :)
Overall looks fantastic ! Great blend of composition, line arts & the colors harmony are especially impressive, especially in such a short time. Only nitpick that kinda jumped in my eyes is the highlight on nose, which feels like it's going too much on the inside, making her face look pretty assymetrical (When I saw you draw it, I was wondering, "is he gonna fix it later ?... oh, never mind, he didn't..." Very easy fix, though, just move the highlight a bit more to the left, and it will be perfect). I'm also reminded the fundamental differences between 2D animation (I used to work in animation) and illustration in the sheer amount of layers (in animation, we have a rough layer, an ink layer, a color one, a shadow one, then a highlight one, and that's it ! No time for any more riffraff, since we still have 80 000 more drawings to go ^^). I'd get completely lost in that sea of layers ^^. Now, it sounds overly critical, but frankly, for a still image, the dynamism of the illustration is off the charts. I'd totally see that happening in a colored manga of super high quality !
Bro every time i watch your intros i laugh hard .. İts really funny...and Your art is really really something most digital artist on youtube dont have... bravo marc
Marc "And this is to go even further beyond! AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!" Viewer 1 "it's impossible.... his levels.... they are over 9000!!!!!" Viewer 2 "What!? 9000!? There's no way that can be right! Can it!?" Marc "That's correct! I have trained for over 20 years as a professional artist! and now you can learn too with my Digital Artist program, link in description!"
8 hours.... man, and i fail to dedicate myself to even just one, let alone 2 hours. Either i am absurdly impatient with my art, or my motivations and goals are just that immediate or something like that. And i'm pretty sure i already spend plenty of time just thinking about the drawings i want to make. And i'm not sure if i need more practice or more experimentation with how i draw. Man....
Hey Marc, do you have any videos that help out to pick base colors for drawings? I struggle a lot with this and I see you started off with a peach-like base for the entire drawing. I dont know if its an artistic choice, but you could tell with the color choices that she's white and has light red hair. Whenever I want to do a dark scene, I end up having to drop a bunch of overlays on normal base colors until I get what I kinda wanted. But you didnt do this, you went straight to ambient base colors and I don't really know how to study/learn to do this. (I know the concepts of shading with warm/cool colors, just struggling with base colors which is ironic lol)
I've been really excited to start art school over, Marc. @Fw_Usilwe can all hope but only a few will make it
I wish you the best of luck!!!

So pretty! I love watching the process of artists regardless of medium
Wow I really liked the style of this video and the art is so epic! I agree you definitely improved with your dynamicness

What an amazing painting to kick off the year! I also really like how you showed glimpses into some of the techniques. Like when we could see your hands irl and how you were shading on a lasso'd section of the drawing.
me yesterday: I wish someone submitted a cel shading video, i don't my like technique anymore
you today:
as a dedicated cel-shader (i've tried painting many times but i just don't find it as fun) i am very pleased rn
Marc man Marc 🎉 just when you think his all leveled up and then hits you with this banger this is ultimate you know

Thanks so much!! Officially welcome to ART School :D It's a lot of work, but the payoff is incredible ;)
Love it, when I've seen you do this style from the DBZ one, it took a while to convince me, but I love this style, and now use it as my own instead.
This is Awesome! Do you think you can make a dedicated video on just the soft shadow part of the process. so we can see in depth what your process is that we can follow along with maybe? 🙏🙏

This is so inspirationally awesome.
Excellent work and info as always, Marc.
I think you were definitely able to push the quality even further beyond
Love your drawings. You are very very good.
Je regardais tes vidéos sur le cel-shading ces derniers jours en me disant que je voulais essayer, tu parles d'une coincidence! 10/10 comme d'habitude!
A professional indeed. Love the vibe
Senpai w/this year’s first class and “it is a BANGER”! Thanx for sharing and I’ll see you next week. 👊🖍️
Always awesome Mr Marc!
I enjoy these tutorials and tips. As a pro, _procrastinator_ , I certainly would recommend noting these techniques
Amazing work as always !
holy crap... that looks amazing!
Wow, Amazing.
Your videos really helped me improve my Art.
Can't wait to see more tutorials in the new year.
A small detail, but I think the earrings were an excellent choice to sell the sideways motion of the drift. It's hard to convey that with a mostly symmetrical image like you get with a car. Nice job 👏
glad someone noticed! Thanks!

Absolutely 🔥! Been following your layering method for a long time now. Life changing indeed🙂↕️
this was awesoooome!!
Hey marc, how did you do the subsurface scattering on 5:55 ? you kind of just skipped that part, it instantly appears.
You can paint it manually fairly quickly but I'm using the outer glow layer style in Photoshop :) I showed how to do it in the other tutorial with the DBZ characters so I figured I wouldn't mention it this time, but I probably should've since I'm now writing this lol
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 Just what I needed.
This was great to watch! Thank you for sharing this!
Also just got access to the Art School course, which I will be doing over the course of this year! So I am quite excited up my art game :)
Thanks so much! Officially welcome to ART School!! Let's gooooo!
I know marc is like an art God but that looks fire dude🔥🔥🔥
I feel like these 10 minutes are going to be awesome and educational.
I was right

Hi Marc, happy new year! :D
Happy new year!!

Great video
Marc "And this is to go even further beyond! AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!"
Viewer 1 "it's impossible.... his levels.... they are over 9000!!!!!"
Viewer 2 "What!? 9000!? There's no way that can be right! Can it!?"
Marc "That's correct! I have trained for over 20 years as a professional artist! and now you can learn too with my Digital Artist program, link in description!"
Thanks for the tips.
Thanks
Thanks for your videos!
lol i was just watching your old cell shading video, the timing is perfect
Sweet!
Saving this for later
Goddamn this looks incredible!
I bought the advanced brushset a month ago and do not see a custom inking brush within it. I’d sure like to have it though…
thx! It should be the second one called MB Hard Rough :) Same one I used here!
I've watched many cell shading tutorials and l have still haven't understood the basic of it or even what it is
Perfection
amazing
Can you tell us please the blend mode. Of the layers please sir

Shows perfect picture...
Masterpiece i say.
You are amazing 💀👍
first class of 2025 let's gooo also that one guitar song making it so I can't monetize this video lol so help a bro and share it around 🔪🔪
Hey Marc, have you updated the course recently?
This is honestly insane like I can’t even dream of being this good 😂
it's not as hard as it looks!
Alr les goo sensei

This is just awesome and I want to try this! What's the app that you're using for your drawings?
Thx! I use photoshop but you could use CSP for the exact same results, it’s 99% identical
