      I'm only 2 months into DE shaving with..8 razors now!! - I would say 2 favs?? My Gillette Fathandle 1946-51 and the Henson A13 mild -still surprised that even mild razor with different blades can become more "efficient". Side note....just ordered a Henson for my 14yr old son - will be his first razor so figured I would start him on DE and with something he basically can't cut himself with!

    And all the best to you for 2022 Greg. I've really enjoyed your humour and take on things. I myself have not bought 17 razors this year but good for you for exploring things to see what you like and I would agree the Rex produces are great. I have the three piece Envoy which just love but which does not love me for some reason; I used it today and nicked myself FIVE places. Ugh. I am keeping it anyway just because it is awesome. One fine day I hope to find a razor/soap combination that will allow me to use it without such trouble. On that note - apparently the Envoy is like the Ambassador on setting three. What setting do you use your adjustable on?

      Thanks Steve for watching and talking with me here! So I typically do my first pass at like 4 or 5 and then roll it back to 2 or 2.5 for the second pass. (Usually try to stick to two passes)

    Awesome video as usual, I don't think that I could do a top 5 (even though I probably have over 10 razors) but my favorite razor it's without a doubt the Edwin Jagger De89.
    Fun fact, I've been watching your videos for a while now and today I noticed that I wasn't subscribed to your channel, it's funny how the TH-cam algorithm works, it kept showing me every single video that you uploaded.

      Yeah I imagine if I did the top 5 in six months it may be different and not because I keep buying razors lol. Thanks for sharing your favorites. I wish I had started out with an adjustable - and wish they were recommended more for new wet-shavers. They seem to be a much better long-term investment. I usually use multiple razors per shave as each has their limitations in some way: the RazoRock Hawk V3 SE open comb, which is very efficient with the thicker Artist Club style blade; the Classic Shaving 'Occam's Razor' SE, which is extremely efficient (and comfortable) XTG that the Hawk can't quite do comfortably, yet still has some limitations; the iKon Tech, which is probably the most aggressive DE razor, to clean any remaining stragglers. To do an entire shave with any single razor is either not completely efficient or uncomfortable.

    • @GregTardif
      @GregTardif  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think an adjustable razor is a good pick to start out with (or as a second razor, to make sure you like this style of shaving) not very often have I needed to do each pass with a different razor.

    The Rex is a great heirloom shaver….There’s just something to higher end razors where I guess the tolerances are tighter or something, but they just shave different and give a later, sometimes MUCH later “5 o’clock shadow”. On the other hand, there are some exceptions such as Blackland’s Era w/ plate 4, shaves in the fashion that I expected the Feather AS-D2 to shave.🤷🏽‍♂️

Since I've only been wet shaving for a bit over 7 months, all of my razors are new to 2021. I started my journey with the VDH and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing you toss it in the trash where it belongs. As you know from my SotD images, I've really gotten into vintage SE razors. The King C. Gillette was my first safety razor. (Looked interesting at a pharmacy section)
    I was later gifted a vintage adjustable Gillette, which I found more novel yet difficult to use.
    I’m still learning about the types, sizes, construction methods/metals, brands, history, techniques, associated products, skin types, etc… and it can feel overwhelming sometimes when getting into this side of shaving.
    The King C. Gillette IS a mild razor, making it potentially preferable to newer DE shavers such as myself.
    It takes real skill and focus on learning the process before you get a shave that is close, comfortable AND you didn’t miss any spots 🥴
    My takeaway from my first few months of DE shaving is:
    Learn the PROPER TECHNIQUES and your razor INSIDE AND OUT before making any judgment calls on aggressiveness, skin products, or branding.
    A $3,000 Vintage Restored Italian Super Safety Razor will do you no good if your end result is normally a patchy, bumpy, and sometimes bloody mess 9/10 of the time. (Which some of mine were 💀)
    This type of shaving is not something you rush.
    It’s not for the impatient or fast-to-judge.
    It’s almost an art and these things are almost brushes. (Heck we even brush our faces first 😂)
    Take your time.
    Because remember? You chose this hobby!

    I also like the PAA Flight Travel and bought it because of you. The Rex Ambassador is okay up to level two for me, but I wish I had the new XL version. I got the Tatara Muramasa and prefer the results compared to the Ambassador except for level five, but the setting numbers are impossible to read and the handle is too short for me. The Rex Envoy XL is a nice one but equal to level three on the Ambassador and too aggressive for me. I really like the Muhle R95 Birch Bark, and my brass Karve SB-B and brass OC-B are great and my favorites. My Feather SS shavette makes me nervous and I've put it away for the time being. I'm up to 28 razors now, and that's just in a five month period which all started when I needed a new Norelco electric and was watching TH-cam videos and ran across the wet shaving channels.
    I have a serious problem when I get interested in a hobby and tend to go overboard initially. I started with the Twig and was happy and I should have stopped watching the shaving channels at that point, lol. Anyway, I'd say if I could have only one razor to use it would be my brass Karve SB-B, as it works well for me with all the blades I've tried so far up to the Feather. I really don't like cartridge razors, but the Gillette Mach 3 is my travel razor. I only keep this device because I can fly with it in carry on.
    If I were to check in baggage, I would check in the blades, and carry on a The New short comb from Gillette. I don't think I would ever feel comfortable travelling with a razor that was expensive or difficult to replace.

      @@GregTardif Thank you. The Aristocrat Jr. is an English made flat bottom TTO razor very much like the English Aristocrat of the same period, but with a handle that is more like an English Rocket. IIUC, it shaves like an Aristocrat, but was a lower cost offering.
      The way to score an Aristocrat Jr. is to look for a Canadian Rocket (made in England). If it has a flat bottom, and reads, "BRIT PAT NO. 430.030" on the underside of the bottom plate, then it is an English Aristocrat, Jr.
      These razors were marketed as Aristocrat Jr. in Britain, and sold in plastic Rocket cases in Canada. Most sellers think that they are just Rockets. But, they aren't. They are heavier and more efficient, with some blade feel, but smooth. The nickel finish is IMO superior to that of USA made Gillette razors.
      Flat bottom English Aristocrat razors are in a higher price category. They come with high end finishing, knurling, fancy cases, and rhodium plating. They are show stoppers. The Aristocrat Jr. is more of a purpose built tool, which I appreciate.
      I would liken the Aristocrat Jr. to a Rocket built without cost constraints or value engineering.

    Nice video. I've only recently started using modern razors, been wetshaving with vintage stuff for 5 or so years. The razors I'm enamored with right now are the Henson medium and RR Lupo.95. I enjoy a more aggressive shave, as you mentioned you do too, so the Lupo fits right into that. The Henson isn't very aggressive but gives marvelous shaves. Sometimes the milder razors (Techs or maybe Super Speeds) just don't give the efficiency I crave. Sorry for the rambling....thanks for sharing!!

      Not rambling just sharing and I appreciate it. I’m nervous to get a Henson because of the lightweight and that’s not what I’m into (no idea why) I need to try some razorock razors sounds like there are a lot of good things out there.

    What is a mild or aggressive razor?

    • @GregTardif
      @GregTardif  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mild razors typically have less blade exposure and feel. Some people like them if their hair isn’t super thick. Aggressive is the opposite with more blade exposure and blade feel. Sometimes called efficient

    • @iaido01
      @iaido01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GregTardif but is aggressive more “dangerous” or does it not matter i have bought jagger don’t know which one, but i think mild. For me it is like magic. I went from gillette fusion to safety razor and I felt like i went from aan fiat punto to an Mercedes S class

    • @GregTardif
      @GregTardif  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s just preference. I like more blade feel and less passes to get a good shave so I have started leaning towards more aggressive razors

    People keep talking about mild or aggressive. When in fact there’s tons of razors that are in that medium range. That Goldilocks range.

    My wife has zero interest in my shaving, although she is happy I have a hobby I'm passionate about. My razors have accumulated over the passed few years, about 25 or so, I don't own any high-end razors personally I don't require my razors to last multiple lifetimes. I'm still a mild razor guy and I would say my 2021 top 5 would be: Rockwell 6c, Henson Mild, Leaf, Twig and Edwin Jagger EJ89.
