67 yo bass player here. “Bass is only as good as what the drums are giving you. “ Committing that one to memory. Loved the spirit in this interview.

I don't know, it seems that you should still be able to hold it down with just a high hat.

Loving your episodes. Saw Hess with William Bell and John Leventhal here in Nashville years ago.

I'm 74 and play Jump Blues and Swing in Los Angeles. I own the same bass 1963. I've owned mine for 40 years and love the tone. I also play 2 G&L's USA made basses. G&L SB2 and a JB. G&L was the last of Leo's real instruments. Play until we drop : )

Love it. I wonder if the depth of bass that you miss from the older recording as compared to newer recording is related to the high levels of compression used in modern music? So much compression and with it maybe some of the the dynamic range you miss? Thanks sharing, enjoyable.

I think you are correct. I also think the warmth of tape may be a factor as well as what seems to be a much diminished role that bass plays in modern music. It was an equal member in older recordings and often more up front depending on the genre. Factor in that tube bass amps aren’t used as often (as well as the old mics to record them with) and how many things are recorded with plug ins. To me it’s the difference between reality and CGI.

...there’s simply nothing like a pre-CBS Fender Bass. The Custom Shop stuff is great but I’ve gone to lengths of dropping in a ‘62, ‘64 and ‘66 pickup into them. It most certainly improves the overall sound of them. I gigged for many years with a ‘60 P and a ‘62 slab-board Jazz Bass...and there is no comparison whatsoever. Every CS Jazz Bass I’ve had, I’ve let go. You just can’t replace “time” when it comes to 50 year old wood that was already 50-80 years old back in the mid sixties when these pieces were assembled. Beautiful ‘63 P there...if you ever come up to the Boston area let me know. I’ll come say hello. Thank you Andy.

I found a little bit of bass playing around 09:20 for anyone else who took the title to mean this would be mostly about the sound of the bass
