Well done video. I wish I had watched something like this years ago. I am embarrassed to say that when I first saw the title I thought " What kind of tips can there be for using a ladder". Boy was I wrong. At this point I plan to watch your other videos. I hate to paint but at least you have helped make the task much easier. Kudos to you.

Omg!!! I do mostly interior painting and that inverted ladder is a game changer!! I have Been in construction for over 20 years and never seen this trick! My father in law was a painter for over 40 years and taught me a lot of tricks but even he never thought to invert the ladder in a stairwell!! I will be using this tip from now on!!

Hi, thanks for all your excellent information. Could you give us information on the plank you are using? Length? Weight? And where you got it?
It's an aluminium plank, very light weight and I think that one was 4 meters. Plenty around for purchase but they are not cheap. Thanks for the question and commenting :)
I like ypur suggestion of durning the step ladder 1/4 turn and placing a board on the needed atep and then putting your plank board on rop of thak.

How would you get place a extension ladder replacing a fascia board about 15 ft up?
If I lay the ladder against the house it pins the fascia board with the ladder and I can’t get at it to pull it and install the new board
Use a ladder stand off and set it below the fascia boards.

Invincible audio but I get the idea. Bucket hooks are not that expensive to buy and always rim out your paint bucket..

Not home made, purchased many years ago before they became illegal here in Australia.

This is how the professionals do it, though OSHA would probably have conniptions watching. It is worth noting that this man has a lot of experience working on ladders and likely has a highly honed intuitive sense of when something is slightly "off", and therefore unsafe, that a DIY'er wouldn't notice as any different from the examples shown. I knew someone who was a speech pathologist who told me many stories of rehabilitating traumatic brain injury patients, MANY of whom were roofers and other contractors who fell while working on, or with, ladders. The intuitive sense of safety this gent likely possesses was probably developed partially as a result of experiencing (personally or witnessing) "near misses" over the years. If you are a DIY'er, do yourself a favor and be extra careful with safety equipment when possible (helmet, harness, bracing, etc). It may seem like overkill, but better that then a TBI or becoming quadriplegic. Also, make damn sure the ladders you use can handle these sort of applications (i.e., don't take an old wooden step ladder that only has under step bracing and turn it upside down and expect that it can take the same load from the other direction).
I once knew a passionate and expert rock climber. He was so good and so respected in the rock climbing world for his skills. He was like a goat. He had developed an intuition of when something was 'off'. He reached that level of expertise where he spent years climbing with little to no ropes. He climbed high and side-ways. He climbed everywhere. Until one day, he made one wrong move.
Rick, these are some good tips, however you should include more info about tip # 1 in your text description.
The ladder you used in the stairwell is not the typical “A” frame or “Step ladder”, instead it is designed to open up and be used similar to an extension ladder. This fact allows the back side to work properly while it is inverted so long as the ladder is closed as you used it on the stairs.
A standard step ladder would likely fail, it is not strong enough to climb the back side and the front steps are not designed to be loaded while inverted.
Many of your viewers are not as experienced with ladders as yourself and could get seriously injured by trying your tip #1 by using a standard step ladder which is very different than the one you used.
Also, I’m sure you have had many comments saying to never stand on the top 2 steps of a step ladder.

Why would he put the step ladder upside down against the stair head wall? I get why he used it that way against the sidewall because the narrow top doesn’t fall off the tread although I still don’t think it’s that stable. Painted plenty of stairwells with a straight ladder against the head wall and a plank to a free standing step ladder on the upper deck. Most step ladders today don’t have load bearing anything on the back side. The 2x through the crossways ladder won’t work with these either. Owner operators don’t usually have to worry about OSHA.
@@peterbarlow8912, I agree with you, it seems to me the inverted ladder on the headwall is more of a disadvantage even with his type of ladder, due to the narrower less stable footing.
Perhaps he just wanted to show the inverted ladder could also work on the headwall.
Checked out your hand truck ladder accessory on your site. Lots weekend warriors have a hand truck. I use a folding canoe dolly (16” wheels) from Scandinavia for moving ladders and staging planks. Still using wood ladder’s myself. They never blow down and you can screw a 2x leg extension to them for uneven terrain.
@@peterbarlow8912 , You’re smart to protect your back by rolling your ladders and supplies, I’ve listened to many workers, young and old, that wished they had taken care of their back.
Sounds like you have a great canoe dolly, unlike the ones made these days in China that are flimsy, and not really suitable for their intended purpose.
Don’t get me wrong I’ll still shoulder around a 24’ wood Flint with box locks and blind mortised hand shaved rungs like I did 50 years ago. Semi retired!

You can't purchase them anymore, illegal. OHS deemed them too dangerous. Had these all my life, works a treat and so much easier to use than the legal ones unfortunately. Happy trails

impactajuvenile He uses a lapel Mic, then, occasionally, does not hook that up, so the cam Mic kicks in, then he narrates over the silent video, doing so with different settings.
Now you see what sound engineers are credited for in tv programming. They get it right.

I bought one of those 13 foot multi ladders. They seem gimmicky but once you start usuing them they're awesome. I don't know how they'd hold up to daily use but for the diy'er they're awesome. I also have the 19 foot version which I wouldn't recommend it's SO heavy. Every home owner should have one of the 13 footers though. Handiest item ever, It will get you up to most things, it's light, VERY stable, and folds small enough to fit in the back seat of a normal car resting on the floor.I had the 19 footer first and thought it was the best thing then I used a friend's 13 footer, and after realizing that it will fit in a car without folding the seats I had to have one.
they're too heavy and awkward in my opinion. For commercial use they are way to slow to set up, take up more room and in general more cumbersome to move around. But as they say, to each there own. :)

I guess in this case, Google is your friend. I have a handful of aluminium planks and mostly because they are lightweight. Not cheap tho

I had not seen ladder jacks with the chain before...do you prefer them over the fixed Werner short body jacks? They seem to offer better adjustment possibilities? Where can I buy them?
To my understanding, they are illegal these days but sooooooo much more useful and efficient than the fixed. Not sure if you can even purchase them today. Hunt around, you may find them. As a last resort a machinist could easily slap up a pair for you. Good luck

When leaning an extension ladde against a sheetrock wall, how do you avoid the ladder legs making a hole in the sheetrock wall with the weight of the ladder and yourself against it at about 12' high or so?
Try wrapping the leg ends with cloth and a bit steeper to have less weight on the wall. :)
Just get a paint bucket hook__it's a hell of a lot simpler than bending and unbending a hard wire.
