I've seen Marco e Ruggiero winning race 3 on Lunarossa Prada Pirelli, and I moved to tears for the emotion! What a nice and spectacular winning from the Rockies! Well done Lunarossa!
The camera/control room selection of shots needs a lot more work.
They are managing to cut away at exactly the wrong moment, time after time.
Agreed. They could make up for it if they would replay the close crosses but unfortunately, they don't.
at the start they show zooms of the single boats, completely useless. Seems like who makes the choices never sailed a regatta...
Agreed. They cut away to replay the French falling off their foils right as the Swiss were slowing down and about to fall of their foils.
Like watching 4 bobble heads trapped uncomfortably below a deck. Are they even really sailing? Thank God for Sail GP!
100% with you. SailGP so much better racing and better TV production(even tho I still wish they'd do that even better)
These boats are fascinating and impressive, but the racing is so dull compared to the old monohulls.
The cameras seem to be concentrating on the wrong part of the field at times (eg: the cross between the swiss and the brits towards the end of race 3)
The britts put in 3 protests, but we didn't get to see why, because the cameras were watching the Italians, who had already crossed the finish line.
I agree about the directing, it's pretty average. There is additionally sometimes a puzzling failure from the commentary team to follow up on interesting incidents, but I guess they are limited to what's being put on screen.
(Some might say that the reason the Brits registered those three protests is down to the personality of the team leader!
I couldn't possibly comment... )
Some points people may have missed when moaning about this race - It’s a PRELIMINARY REGATTA. Designed to shake down the teams, equipment and tactics. Two of the teams (USA and Italy) had stand-in skippers getting experience. The whole reason for this is to get data, to see the competition, to refine your technique in a format that doesn’t affect any standings.
Imagine the disaster if the first race was the actual Louis Vuitton Cup?
NZ needs this as much as the other teams as they won’t be competing in the LVC - they need as much practice and competition as they can get over the next few months. Burling and most of his team has had the experience of big boat foiling in SailGP, as well as being intimately involved in the design and format of this competition - it’s normal for the defender to be leading in the preliminary races - but they still need as much time in the boat as they can get.
American supporters writing their team off, wait till your actual team captain is in charge of the boat. Right now it’s just practice.
optimistic
Nevertheless you actually need to start to run the race to get the practice, not fail to even start - that's a massive waste of racing experience.
Slingsby was on the boat. I don't know where so many people got that wrong info from. After the race, he's on video saying "How did we make those mistakes?'... I'm embarrassed. I've never sailed like that before."
@@Gottenhimfella I got it from the crew list of the first three races. Slingsby wasn't driving, was taking a back seat to the young guns. Nobody said he wasn't on the boat.
Great racing but the usual moronic direction showing the winners and even holding interviews with the winners while the others are still racing. Its just ridiculous.
God Defend NZ, pure grace setting a pace for the regatta, with a magnifisant opening round. awesome
Can we PLEASE not cover the start line with graphics so you can't see the boats on final approach!
PLEASE get rid of the background noise (the radio traffic) from the commentary. It’s making it completely inaccessible for those who have hearing issues. Not a great advert for the America’s Cup organisation. I’ve been reduced to watching with the sound turned off.
Separate audio channels for the commentators and boat comms would be great - I don't mind watching twice sometimes to hear just the boat comms!
How about not interviewing the winner of a race so we cannot see the event unfold, while the race is still ongoing! Lousy producing.
please show the racing - not bobbling heads and on-board close ups. We know you have a camera on every boat.
These boats are very impressive but the racing is boring. Would love to see these sailors going up against each other in proper sailing boats where the crew have to actually do something
The choices of camera angles were always really bad. Clearly, there is no understanding of regattas by whoever is in charge of them. The continuos close up to the single boat are in general useless, you get no information from them: how is the boat positioning itself compared to the close ones? What choices is each team doing regarding their positioning in the regatta field? Are there right hand shifts/ left hand shifts and who is benefitting from them?
Some zoom in are fine, but the continuos choice of them makes the regatta unfollowable.
Most of all, during the starting procedure!!!!!! That's clearly the most exciting part of the race, where the strategy of positioning yourself compared to the other is a game of chess! But if you do those zooms, it is impossible to grasp them!
Please please put an experienced sailor in charge of this task
Absolutely agree on all points. Coverage is no where close to SailGP (and the racing is better there too)
These light wind races are painful to watch
It’s a shame that the AC is now helping Saudi Arabia help in their sport washing propaganda. I will not watch these. Bad choice AC committee.
Please elaborate
Looks like an incredible venue.
@@shanefield1217 Human rights abuses. The ordered murder of Jamal Khashoggi, an American journalist and dissident. Lots of info on the horribleness of the House Saudi including MBS
🎉 totally agree!
😴😴😴
Boy, American Magic shat the bed.
With a scratch crew. Wait till the number one crew get in the boat. Slingsby was keeping an eye on the race, not skippering the boat.
Maybe they let Spithill drive by mistake.
They were horrible. I do no get it. American Magic looked like a team of Amateurs racing against professionals. Is their foil design just that far behind everyone else in light air?
@@player101snoop The foils and foil control systems (like everything else on these one-design AC40 boats) are built identical across the fleet, and held that way, to within very tight limits.
wanted to get all three days down so i can binge watch. looking forward to some great sailing... water is water... let's have some fun.
The cats are much better to watch in marginal conditions - still fast off the foils, and more likely to get back on the foils. This falling off the foils once = game-over is stupid.
Seems like all the systems for this are separate and different from all the systems from the AC last time or the previous time or the SailGP systems. It's not like there's a lot of money in sailing broadcast. Seems like if they could share systems and re-use systems that would work better and cost less?
I really don’t like having the chat from on board, the boat playing and behind the commentators
Just pick one or the other don’t do both at the same time.
That’s good hearing the chat on board the boat, but if the commentators are talking over it, you can’t really understand it
And I really enjoyed having close-ups of the boats but not in the pre-start of the race wide angle shots are much better so you can see how the boats are positioning themselves for the start close-ups in this stage of the race an absolute negative for the viewer because you cannot understand what has actually happened and who is won the pre-start tech decks properly
Maybe ads literally every 5mn for 2 hours is a bit too much no? Almost 1 ad per leg, crushes the whole experience of watching. And considering the audience/views it’s definitely not worth it for the channel in terms of revenue compared to the budgets in AC. Just making the online experience for fans terrible.
Yes, they do have to use the wind to move, they have to figure out oscillations and time the start properly, but this is more drag racing than regatta sailing. Great looking boats and impressive technology, but I just watched my last day of the AC.
Drag racing? I would call it more like formula 1. Good stuff!
It’s windward/leeward racing ….. classic regatta sailing
Your team performed poorly, then?
Your loss! Just the beginning. 75's will be REAL fun though!
Yes they did.
This is a very good broadcast team. I hope they stay together for AC.
Really impressive boats, but the racing is just awful. Seriously painful to watch.
Amazing races, especially race three - good show!
New Zealand are just on another planet … they play a different game
Just like 4 years ago the production is so unprofessional, the Augmented reality will make you puke faster than any boat, and the sound is a complete mess! No wonder no press is covering this event on either side of the Atlantic! Well done AC!
are all these boats the same? do they have different foils? sails identical? how can you tell where the wind is by looking at the sea?
"Saudi Arabia, a remarkable country..." WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATTTT??????????????
Compared to the Star Sailors League in Gran Canaria, in my opinion this racing is boring and one dimensional. But it's early days.....
Watching four helmets pressing buttons = Snooze fest😴
dont watch it then
@okanui Thanks, Captain Obvious.
@@thunderwing2 snooze feast in a normal monohull in 7 knots... sleep mode. watch day 2
I miss sail changes!
Be nice to see the race (rather than be looking at the bow or crew of boats). The helicopter view is best as you can see the positions and courses of the boats, particularly at marks rather than watching individual boats round. Clueless Director in picture choices.
Burliñg and Nathan Tuke Malony can you go faster please. ❤❤❤❤
Totally unwatchable. Americas Cup San Fransisco my wife was always watching with me. Now she walkes away. Way to go AC organization. Maybe Larry and his mechanic have to return? O yes. Organization giving penalty's while they are intervering with the start is hilarious.
no grinders anymore?
no arrows on the screen showing wind direction and speed.
In race 2. There actually was very close racing between 2nd to 5th place and the commentators barely mentioned it
They need to get rid of McIvor..bring back Kenny!
I agree, there were boats dropping off the foils, position changes and hardly a mention from the commentator, so tons of excitement missed.
Racing in low winds, is a depressing sight for these boats.
Minimum wind limit sufficient to plan, or the race becomes less interesting than an optimist regatta.
Qualcuno di voi ha visto Luna Rossa ???
Awesome racing, thanks for showing us . The comments from the commentators professional and accurate, thanks guys 👍. Greetings from NZ
Really NOT.
@@barryscott6222 Really WAS 😂
The production of this is RUBBISH
Yep spot on, has a lot to do with Steven Mcivor, dickhead with no sailing knowledge whatsoever, ruined the last cup in nz with inane comments
Masterclass on the Mediterranean?? Er…. It’s the Red Sea…..
Yeah, starting the inteview with the Italian nonsense talk "...howa happy everyaone in the teama isa..." while the race is still going on - that is really disrespectful to say the least. Hope we never see any "work" of this camera team again when the real action finally goes down.
why should they know English? they are not English.
So this is what the Cup of Vanderbilt, Stephens, Mosbacher, Ficker, Turner, Butterworth, Coutts and Dennis has become? Dalts, what have you done?
I hope Larry is watching and getting so upset that he will return to challenge for the Cup.
Pretty sure this is a preliminary, shakedown series. Slingsby wasn’t even in the boat.
Same thing with Spithill and Bruni for LR. Truly meaningless racing.
@@Zootalaws "Slingsby wasn’t even in the boat."
I don't know where people got that from. After the race, he's on video saying "How did we make those mistakes?'... I'm embarrassed. I've never sailed like that before."
VMG?
Ben finds something to complain about again.😂
They’re world champions at moaning
They've mostly all had their boats for a lengthy time. Teams should have caught up by now.
why are NZ faster? explain please.
“Bravi raga!”
explain the penalties at race 2 leg 1 please.
Lashhhgoo NZ!!!
Sorry. This not America's Cup type racing. Boring as all hell.
What is America's cup racing?
Agreed...with all the above. Please bring back sail boats. Bring back the J's.
Jump in a time machine.@@SusanRichardson-k5m
how would Sail GP boats perform against these 40s?
I thought the conditions on the water would be more "Choppy"
Pretty boring compared to SailGP, why does these boats exist? The only people who care are in NZ.
Who the heck was helming the US boat?
These boats don’t point very high up wind
They don't need to doing 25 knots
I acknowledge that it's a first world problem and probably very petty but does anybody else get irritated by the NZ commentator's pronunciation of Luna Rrrrrrossi Prada Pirelli? It sounds like it is such an effort for him to roll his Rs. Either perfect it or don't bother. As it is, it sounds like he is trying too hard and I note that it was the same with his commentary of the last America's Cup.
Where the hell is Jeddah ?
Really ?!
The 'sailors' are technicians, and never get their hands wet.
Cool tech, zero style period. Give me a 12m any day!
Well that is the last AC I will be watching, that was like watching paint dry, boring. Another case of how technology is destroying the world.
not sure why, but i don't find this type of racing compelling anymore.
maybe try SailGP in 8 days... much better IMHO.
This is not sailing!! Bring back sail boats!!!
I love the Americas cup over the years and always watched it but I’m bored as hell watching this stuff, something is missing but I can’t work out what.
Competition. NZ are in a different league, the rest are just falling over.
Just give it some time. Should be better when the real races start. Better coverage should improve it too.....I hope!
Just absolute trash by NYYC
Sorry to whinge ... but the commentary ain't great. Just talking about if they are on the plane or not, not much depth about the tactical close battles and constant choices that happening and no start tactics proper analysis. Great racing though.
💚🤍❤💚🤍❤💚🤍❤💚🤍❤💚🤍❤💚🤍❤
Watching paint dry is more entertaining.
Seems harsh giving a dsq when they still had to come all the way back and cross the start line. It's not like they would have had any chance in the race anyway.
could it be any clearer that these teams really just do not give a flying @#*$( about this "regatta"... zero F's given to actually try to be anywhere near a competitive start or sail.
How about this idea. Sailing on these foils is next to impossible in light winds. NZ just makes it look easy but it isn’t.
I m pretty sure they care, but this is the most difficult form of yacht racing on the planet that rewards the most accurate and heavily-penalises those that aren’t on their game. Would I be right in thinking you’re not a TeamNZ supporter?
This ‘racing’ is painful to watch.
This is very dull.
Arguably the worst sailing I have seen by an AC event. I’m going to pass on watching days 2 and 3. I can watch my own paint dry.
Direction is terrible, focusing on someone way out in front instead of the close racing and place changing elsewhere....we want to see the racing, not the winner crossing the line, nor his support team....and graphics are terrible, overlays even worse and no co-ordination of information, penalty shown on top of mast yet cleared in position graphic bottom left in previous shot....a billion dollar sport, poorly presented....can I offer my help?
OMG, they have the onboard cameras pointing the wrong direction!
The biggest problem is the commentary, video strategy, and graphic choices.
As it stands, you cannot follow a race the same way you can follow other sports. The promoters must aim the production at people who can follow the action. Dumbing it down, or making it a social event, will only drive your core viewers away. Casual viewers will either figure it out, and love it, or not. Development will be slow, it's a very complex sport, but only by making that complexity available will you get regular adherents. Yes, it will always be a niche sport, but that doesn't mean it can't be viable.
Details:
The onboard sailor's talk is generally unintelligible, and even if it were it would not convey understandable information to viewers, besides commentators talk over it as often as not. Get rid of onboard chat, and unnecessary mechanical noises, unless there is something really special. The mechanical noises are really annoying.
With rare exceptions, commentators should talk about what's happening in front of them. Less color please.
No static views of boat or crews, such as 32:14, We are here for the racing, which means mostly overhead shots.
In order for viewers to understand what is happening we need certain data:
Real time wind direction and velocity over the whole course That's strategy, one of the four legs of dinghy racing. Yes, this is dinghy racing.
Current, if it's an issue, and possible.
Ladders must shift with wind direction.
Closer examination of crossings and covering. That's tactics, another leg
More data in the individual boat data window, at least VMG. That's the technique leg.
What do you think the fourth leg is? All sport has four legs, not all sports use all four.
Etc.
These two point foilers are amazing, please bring to the coverage up to their level. What's amazing about them? Well, their speed will bring in viewers, but it's their ability to tack and jibe fast enough to bring tactics back into play, after being eliminated by four point foilers, gives me hope that they will be fun to watch.
Raise the minimum wind velocity, and cancel races when more than half the fleet cannot maintain foiling at any given time. No one wants to watch these beasts off foil. You should only schedule regattas in known good wind locations. Perhaps you might try Corpus Christi in the summer.
Just a joke, you can't race these boats In Corpus Christi bay.
What a waste of effort to have the America's Cup be represented like this.
First let me say the tecnology is amazing. This racing is terrible. Very little close action, no visible crew work, and not competitive. Close hauled around the entire course. It's like watching power boats. BORING.
Of course they are close hauled - they generate their own 20 knot apparent wind
Ever see ice boat racing??? Try it out.
I sailed themas a kid. @@dianecampbell3006
@@hogwash1462 I'm not surprised in the close hauled. But it takes a big part of the game away in my opinion. Crew work on these boats does not exist. I think that's important. Your crew riding bicycles isn't sailboat racing.
@@mikewiedl1991 I do understand your point about the crew work so I watch the 18footers for that. I don't think there's anyone cycling in these - all battery driven? Still takes a heck of a lot of coordination and skill to keep these things flying especially gybing and tacking. Racing looked pretty good on Day 2 with a decent breeze and 30 knot upwind and 40 knot downwind.
QUE FOME...
What is that noise??!!
Hydraulics, probably.
Hard to watch. Boring. Everything is automated. Bring back boats/crews that have to manually manage/change sails. Test the crew, not computers. Foiling is cool, I guess, but technology has ruined America's Cup racing.
Boooooring
That was painfully boring to watch..
Sail GP es mucho más divertido y más rápido.
