Having owned a manual 456 (only 93 came to the US) and now a F1 575, I can tell you that yes the manual is a unique pleasure but also that the F1 is no where near as bad as it has been maligned. What it requires is a deft touch on the accelerator to properly match engine RPM on the upshifts. Put the car in Sport mode (quicker shifts) and lightly feather the throttle on an upshift and it is just as quick and smooth as an early generation Porsche DCT. Whenever a reviewer writes that the early F1 was jerky or abrupt, it only means they didn't figure out how to shift the beast properly.
