Incredibly informative! Love the new director's vibe! Dr. Rathmell appears to be ready to level up research in a big way! Great job by communications office as well; Sabrina Islam-Rahman, in particular, was measured, genuine and quite knowledgeable as she guided interview. I'm sure there were lots of other folks "behind the scene" as well who deserve kudos for a job well done. Carry on and let's beat cancer!!!

My daughter has a Neuro-endocrine small cell carcinoma, it i in the mid with some major arteries near, it was 4-5cm and considered inoperable, it also has gone to 2 lymph nodes in her arm pits, radiation was not an option, so she went through 4 series of chemo with no avail, and is now getting hormomal type injections. Now she works for Kaiser and is having a hard time getting a second opinion outside of Kaiser, is there something that can be done otherwise, we are almost at our wits end and could really need some help.

Hello, we are sorry to learn of your daughter's diagnosis and the challenges she is experiencing in getting a second opinion. You may wish to reach out to the Medical Oncology Service at NCI's Center for Cancer Research in Bethesda, MD to inquire about a consult. They can be contacted ncimo_referrals@mail.nih.gov. We also invite you to contact the NCI's Cancer Information Service (CIS) for information on getting a second opinion and support: www.cancer.gov/contact. Take care.

Is cancer a disease or a virus.

Cancer is a term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control and can invade nearby tissues. Cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body through the blood and lymph systems. Cancer is not a virus and is not a contagious disease that easily spreads from person to person. More information is available at www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/understanding/what-is-cancer. Take care.
