I participated in Replit's game jam Kajam that has a grand prize of 10,000 dollars! I had to make a game without a game engine for the first time, so I used Pygame. Polymars is also sort of in this video (and possibly my basement) and he used the javascript library, kaboom.js, to make his game!

I must say after starting out using no game engine you really gain a massive appreciation for how awesome something like Unity is. And yes, I made sure to use as much trigonometry as unnecessarily possible when starting unity because math is fantastic
