I'm surprised nobody's really given the background for "taller than you" yet. They've mentioned the girls are each basically 1 cm apart from the others closest in height and they would bicker about that constantly. (Moonbyul is the tallest at 162.8 cm (that 0.8 is *very* important to her), solar is next at 161 cm, then hwasa at 160 and finally wheein at 159 cm) Even as late as "egotistic" behind the scenes, you'd find the members arguing over height and bickering over who gets to wear what heels, with the first on the scene trying to find the tallest pair in the batch Their music ceo, kim dohoon, heard some of this bickering and thought it would make for a funny song, plus a good way to channel their energy, so "taller than you", also called "1 cm", was born When they were filming the mv for the song, solar and wheein were recorded at like 3 am, complaining about having to film so late, napping in their makeup waiting for their turn to film. The ceo saw this and again thought it would make for a fun and funny song, so yet another of their crack songs was born. We got a partial live performance of it, but the full song itself didn't get released until the 'red moon' album alongside "egotistic"
So for your context, they are all very short. There’s a complication video of Mamamoo literally disappear on stage due to being hidden behind other idols😂 Moomoo said they have mastered the art of the invisible supper power. Good thing they always use that to their advantage to sneak out of events. Mamamoo is always the first to leave from big events. They just sneak out at the back😂
This album, dude, is a complete package. 1. Taller than you was written by Solar, Moonbyul and Hwasa to roast each other's height especially Wheein because she's the shortest, Solar's dwarf speech is a fun parody of Jesse. The live version of where they are dressed in stripes is iconic. 2. You are spot on Words Don't Come Easy. It's a helluva of a sexy song. 3. My Favourite Thing. You were also spot on that. Whenever they go home especially Wheein and Hwasa, that's one the most wholesome adventure that they have. I guess you do need a place that keeps you humble and grounded. 4. I Miss You. Devastating Tear maker that song and any live performances that they do with that song is beyond epic. These talented Queens of the Moomoo nation can really grab you by the neck and yet gently smoother you to sleep. That's our mighty Mamamoo. Like you said, criminally under appreciated globally.
Aw, jjing jjing. The dog seen in the mvs for "taller than you" and "my hometown" was solar's salt and pepper schnauzer, jjing jjing, who passed away at 18 (and solar withheld that information even from wheein and hwasa for months to not upset them) but at least she got immortalized in these videos
There is a great episode of 'i live alone' where hwasa (cast member of the show at the time) takes wheein back to their hometown of jeonju and they visit some of their old stomping grounds. Some of the locations they went in that episode, especially one particular food stall, saw a huge uptick in visitors/customers There was also a mural of wheesa (wheein + hwasa) together painted on a wall somewhere downtown that wheein went out of her way to locate and pose with during one of her solo trips back to visit friends and family Wheein also was a one-off reporter, the sprout reporter, for a tv show just a year or so ago and reported on places in jeonju that people should visit
Sitting here giggling thinking about all the songs you’re about to discover next. Objectively think Mamamoo has never put out a bad song ever(even their CF and solo songs), but I know people have different tastes. Personally, I think their discography is a no skip. Just that I had to sort it into different mood playlists. Anyway, as always, this was fun! Didn’t even notice the time. Excited for the next one!
1 Cm/Taller Than You. The instrumental track is based on Dr Dre's groove for Eminem's The Real Slim Shady. They're all short - approx 5'4" - and are about 1 CM apart so this is like a bunch of munchkins arguing over who's the tallest midget in Oz. The person at the end is Solar wearing a baseball cap doing a parody of Jessi on Unpretty Rapstar. Did you really not recognize her? lol They not only recorded this song and made an MV for it, they promoted it as the 2nd pre-release single from the album and performed it on the tv music shows. It's a fan favorite and they continue to perform it during their annual concert tours with hilarious pre-song skits where Wheein finds various ways of turning the tables and becoming the tallest member. Btw, Jessi has since become their friend. Jessi and Hwasa were in Lee Hyori's multi-generational project gg called The Refund Sisters. Hwasa and Solar both appeared when Jessi hosted Showterview and you'll want to watch those episodes (fun and funny). When she interviewed Solar I was disappointed that Jessi didn't bring up Solar's parody of her in 1 CM or do a part of the song as a duo, which would have been wild. The live performance of Words Don't Come Easy was filmed at a Mamamoo concert so that's not great production, it's great playing by the live band. As you may know S Korea has a declining birth rate. I look at WDCE as MMM's way of encouraging folks to reverse that trend via one of kpop's sexiest baby making songs. Who else would invite a fan to come on stage and be fondled by the members? lol Mamamoo songs about love, sex, desire and passion tend to be more explicit and visceral than the PG Hallmark greeting card style of most pop songs. I'm not going to spoil the spicy songs you haven't gotten to yet. :) Friday Night is another 70's r&b song to an old fart like me, tho it's perfectly fine and appropriate that you associate it with a later time period. For an example of a 70's album you might not be familiar with because it didn't have super famous pop hits, the keyboards and strings on Friday Night are similar to the kind of arrangement & style you'll find on Aretha's album Hey Now Hey (The Other Side of the Sky). Since you like Friday Night and Emotion I think that album will be right up your alley (if you haven't heard it already). Moosical was Mamamoo's debut concert in 2016 - they did 2 shows in Seoul and 2 in Busan, which sold out in minutes. Their 2017 concerts were called Moosical Curtain Call ... naturally. I Miss You was also my favorite MMM song until Jan 4, 2018 when they released Paint Me, the theme song for the 4 Season 4 Color project. Paint Me was an unpromoted pre-release single from the Yellow Flower album. In I Miss You they takes turns impersonating an emotional wrecking ball but Solar is absolutely surgical with the way her voice manipulates my nervous system like I'm a frog in a biology lab. I'm old - do kids still torture frogs in bio labs these days? I swear there's no filter between Solar's heart and her voice. Her goofy, childlike, crackhead craziness is just the most obvious aspect of her generous heart and pure, innocent and yet fiery spirit and when she pours it all into a ballad it's like getting hit with a bolt of emotional lightning.
Solar is from seoul and moonbyul is from bucheon (wonmi dong was a district in it up until 2016 when the city removed all districts, though the neighborhood is quite likely still called wonmi). Basically, the two visited each other's home towns together while wheein and hwasa just went home
Hoping you will still do live performances with the mv’s. There are some iconic ones out there. I can think of a few songs that might challenge IMY from the top spot, but they might need the live version to push it over. However, just hearing the end of IMY, and the runs they are doing, and I am doubting myself now.
Actually, Taller than You is the one that bring me into the fandom. Because how could a girl group make a song about their height difference. they are seriously so unserious
You reacted to the "tamed" ver of Words Don't Come Easy live 🤣 tamed in a sense that MoonSun (Moonbyul and Solar) didn't do their usual choreo on a certain part bec that day, their parents/family came to watch 🤣🤣🤣🤣 If you wanna know what I mean, watch the ver I linked 🤣
I struggled to realise for a while, like you, that it is actually Solar in the last bit of 1cm/Taller Than You. She's carrying on their parody of a show called Unpretty Rapstar.
Specifically, she's parodying jessie (which i kind of wish got brought up in one of their interviews together later) Mamamoo did a whole short parody series of the show called 'i'm pretty rapstar', though i dunno if it is all still available anywhere
Haha, luckily moomoo, very happily being touch by mamamoo. Ya, they bring different moomoo for Word Don’t Come Easy during their concert. Don’t doubt, mamamoo are very close with moomoo, they even BBQ together with their fans. They suit every genre, no doubt vocal queen in kpop. Solar from Seoul, byul from bucheon, wheein and hwasa from jeonju, so Solar and byul not same hometown. Wow, I think WAW and Hwasa LMM will get you emotional too.
Yes that’s the tame version of live Word don’t come easy.
