As silly as this may sound. I was having the worst anxiety. After watching your videos I feel so calm. Your voice. Your demeanor. Your way of life feels very peaceful to watch. I really enjoy your videos!
Try rolling down your passenger door window a 1/2 inch. The escaping air will help draw the heat forward. My Dad used to do this in the farm house we heated with wood. At the farthest end of the house he would open a window just a crack
Also, as warm air, with a high relative humidity, escapes through the small opening, it will be replaced with colder dryer air with a lot lower humidity content, which will heat up quicker and to a higher average temperature. Counter intuitively the average temperature inside should be a little warmer with the window slightly open, because it takes less energy to heat it. Also more healthy, less carbon monoxide, particulates, more oxygen.
how does heat escape from a negative pressure condition, that the stove sucking in cabin air for combustion, has created? By not having an exterior cold air intake, the stove is doing opposite of what you wrote. Its drawing cold air INTO the van. Anybody who has grown up with fireplaces or stoves like the one featured can tell you that.
It's his general competence which never fails to shock me, combined with high level emotional intelligence, and meta-awareness which often translates to self-deprecating humour.

You'll need a system to keep you from driving off with the pipe up. I would either do something with the keys so you're like "oh right... the pipe" or put some sort of "remove before flight" type of item. Maybe on the steering wheel or in the seat. Anyway, great job, sir!
@@MilesCobbett yes! Install the stove where the engine compartment cover is located. Minimal heat shielding required, plus you can vent heat through the engine compartment during extreme cold weather conditions. Let’s brainstorm Forest’s van until it flies!!!

She said I love how quite it is when it snows... and its God's filter! Out of the mouths of babes. She's 23 now and still loves the snow.
mmmmm... looks so fancy with the stove in your home. looked so warm and cozy. there's always just something magical about a fire during a cold night like it not only warms up your body but also your soul. anyway. with such a nice setup how about some storytelling while the food is cooking. you were talking about regretting deleting a video that was about your past life? perhaps people would be interested in some of that
Exactly. Im getting a wood stove installed for a couple of reasons 1) natural heat that relies on nature wood vs propane or electricity 2) ability to cook with it and 3) fire is soothing and some of us have a strong relationship with fire for all is uses. Quickest way to feel secure on a wintry night is sitting on the stove, possibly boiling hot water for cocoa, tea, or water the next day 🙂
I'd recommend cutting some logs and leaving them somewhere for next winter for you to pick up, even somewhere in the forest, ideally under some cover or roof. Wood doesn't dry that fast, I usually leave mine for 1-2 years. It burns way better, has less smoke and gives warmth more effectively. Just plan ahead and have even a few places where you leave the wood to dry.
@@johnwinnerdz1 Make sure you get heat treated ones and not the chemically treated ones. I forgot the letters (maybe MB) but the chemical ones should be marked
I find one year is about perfect, or even anything over six months. After a while you lose so much moisture that the wood feels like half its weight or less, and burns fast, but TOO fast.
I love the shot of your van at 7:19 in the snowstorm with your newly installed wood stove keeping you toasty, totally self-sufficient and capable. A very romantic image to be sure. Great video. I like your storytelling of the project's progression to your enjoyment of the end result. Keep it up, Foresty!
The wood stove was a great addition. Keeps you warm if you'd ever run out of diesel or electricity in the wilderness, could be a life saver. Plus the atmosphere it creates in the tiny yet cozy and compact space is superb.
welcome to the world of the wood stove. The trick is to minimize the number of times you touch each piece. In Newfoundland we have an expression "Busier than a man with two woodstoves" ... now you can see why. Keep up the great work FF!
From my stove days , I remember folks saying a small lump of coal would keep the stove hot all night. Best time to cut , split and stack firewood is in May. It has all those summer months to dry out. I could see small hidden stacks of firewood throughout the Canadian wilderness.
Along the west coast, people will lay thick slabs of Douglas Fir bark on top of a good fire. The bark burns slow enough that you still have heat in the morning.
My dad and I love your videos. We are french campers and we don't understand everything but I understand you're funny, capable, and you do a fancy job in your van. You are our idol !😆🥰😂

Just today i was thinking "All I need is a woodstove in my camping truck. Lol yeah right." Then here you are like the G of Gs, doing exactly that. Nice job bro. Youre a legend.
When everything fails all will be well because your wood stove will never let you down. Hey with that wetish wood it’s common for it to just have coals and not put out much heat but best to just leave them in and put dry wood on top those coals will burn down.Having a nice ash bed makes any stove burn better. You need a little compartment to stache good dry wood for max btu’s on those cold nights.Just having it warming up by the stove will help a bit. Throw wood on the roof and when you drive it’ll dry it lol As for not heating as well down low what about running some piping like dryer vent from the stove and then just use a couple of in line fans to pump heat to the front? Even little computer fans in the piping would work and wouldn’t draw much power. Great video.
Having a bit of a rubbish time regarding my health at the moment but your videos really lift my spirit. If everything goes to plan, I'll be back to normal in a couple of months so keep creating, so I've something to watch while I'm recovering from my treatment. Once all this is sorted we plan on getting a motorhome and enjoy some of the things you do, although as we live in England it will be a bit different but I’m sure still fantastic. I’m not saying I’d swap places with you if I could as I wouldn’t want anyone to go through what I’m currently experiencing but I would love to be doing the same. Enjoy every day. Thanks Foresty.
You need to add a damper to your stove pipe. I noticed flams coming out of the roof pipe. A damper will give you more control of the burn rate/time.I always added them just above the stove about 6 to 8 inches. That should give you much better control of the burn rate.
@@forestyforest It should be fairly easy to make one. Use a long nail and something just smaller than the inside diameter of your pipe. It will have to be able to withstand the heat. Possibly take a 6 inch and have someone to cut it down to your pipe size. Good luck and stay safe.

Wood stoves are certainly a valued backup to the diesel heater. The ambience they provide is in itself a worthy asset. There real value is if the electricity or diesel malfunctions most people can find something to burn to stay warm. It's a survival mechanism that has no equal when you are in the woods.
Nicely done, Sir Forest. A wood stove is a great idea for extended stays in the back country. Dry poplar is a surprisingly good choice for stove burning. It burns hot and clean, and produces no big cinders (clunkers) that birch and fir leave after a slow burn.
Wow that's the best designed caboose I've ever seen. I grew up in a northern community with no motor vehicles just team of horses pulling a sleigh but on real cold days we'd put a caboose on the sleigh with cheap tin stove and ordinary tin stove pipes.

FF, mate how about building a racking to go around your chimney where you could store your cut up logs. Would act as a good heat shield and dry them out.
@@forestyforest you just have to be careful, I've had logs catch on fire after leaving them to dry around/above the wood stove before. Using wood logs as a heat shield might not be the safest in a van haha

Wow that's the best designed caboose I've ever seen. I grew up in a northern community with no motor vehicles just team of horses pulling a sleigh but on real cold days we'd put a caboose on the sleigh with cheap tin stove and ordinary tin stove pipes.
I always wanted to put a wood stove in my camper. Thank you for showing me that a wood stove would be more trouble than it's worth. The diesel heater makes life so much easier.
I am a new subscriber to your channel and I must admit I am hooked your series and I now will be trying to find a used Quigley and build one myself even though I have a 30ft travel trailer and a Bigfoot slide-in camper 🙄 The Quigley seems to be quite the elusive vehicle here in Alaska. Forest, I am looking forward to more videos!
Amazing! I'm wanting to be where you are, in sure independence, resilience, and frugality. Kudos to you for having such remarkable traits.
FF, mate how about building a racking to go around your chimney where you could store your cut up logs. Would act as a good heat shield and dry them out.
Cool idea!
@@forestyforest you just have to be careful, I've had logs catch on fire after leaving them to dry around/above the wood stove before. Using wood logs as a heat shield might not be the safest in a van haha
Wow, insanity, I can’t believe he installed a wood oven in a van! I thought I was hard core when I installed one in a modified cube fishing tent with the welder’s blanket around the hole.
Maybe you could plumb the stove to heat a water tank, hot water and possibly a shower??? Luxury.
I thought snow chains were adjustable so fit a range of tyre sizes? I would get them. If you get stuck you would definitely wish you had them.
Very well filmed this episode. A*.
Forests “mobile log cabin cooking show” 😂👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻 Love all the “advice” you get from the comfort of their homes!
Msg on patreon has appeared today 🤞
Is he ok?
Thanksgiving leftovers and a foresty forest video, what a life 😎
Forestry where are you? are you okay?
Foresti, you eat better than most people. Your cooking is excellent. I can tell that food is delicious
Where you at forest it's been a week.. hope everything is blessed wit chyu
Wood stove seems like a good idea for day time and diesel for overnight.
Wicked setup
How do you get more done with a jigsaw than I do with a shop full of tools? I have watched and enjoyed every one of your videos! Stay safe and blessed!
He' s like bob villa and chuck norris combined.
