Thank you for taking the time to share this technique. This is easy to follow and you have inspired me to make a captain's wheel.

The thing I love the most is how decorative your jig is! SO often we just have them shoved around the shop looking messy. What a fantastic idea to have it look so nice. You could hang it on the wall as a decoration and no one would even know it was a jig!

Thank you Carl. I've made a few miniature spirals and they take quite a while but are very satisfying. If you want to make larger ones the lathe hand wheel won't give sufficient leverage unless you like a lot of pain. The capstan is the answer. It's also important to leave an untouched inch or so at the end of each spiral. If you decide on a hollow spiral you should also think about inserting a piece of contrasting wood in the centre/center.
    Many thanks,
    Alan.

I really like this video. Very nice and I think an easy way to accomplish the spiral. I would like to see how you made the jig. I know it looks simple but for me I have to see it to copy it. Thanks for the nice videos you post.

I was thinking threwout the video wow that must have taken alot of time, then you answered it in the end, 3 hours was less than i imagined, then again your a skilled woodworker. Thanks for sharing. Im still hoping to turn my finances around so i can invest in a lathe. Blessings from Sweden / Mikael

Cool jig. I want to do spirals. I have seen it done with chisels. However, with that jig and gouge you made it look easier. Glad you received my sticker!

Hi Carl! Thank you for sharing this video! I have been watching some videos about turning spirals, and I think I should give it a try sometime in the future. The sanding taco seems like a nice jig for doing just that job and also sanding in tight coves. Also, I loved the idea of the dowel, because there you can go pretty thin in diameter. Excellent video! Cheers! Daniel

I have made similar spirals but completely connected with a ring around the spiral with no joints and the ring will travel all along by holding the thing in different positions.

I use Milliput for customising vinyl toys! It sands like bondo but is structurally much stronger, I would imagine it turns beautifully...

This jig looks like it works great. I wonder if a hand wheel on the other end of the headstock would work. Not as much leverage but more versatile. I made a hand wheel for my Shopsmith using a Dado blade arbor. It really comes in handy.

    • @CarlJacobsonthewoodshop
      @CarlJacobsonthewoodshop  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Gil Grace Thank you Gil! Yes a hand wheel on the back side works great too, but for this the leverage really helps.

Quality. I found your video while searching for a very similar one I watched two years ago. He also used painter's tape to define the spiral prior to cutting a reference line. He did use a carving gouge, referred to it as an "eight sweep six" or something like that. Anyone have any idea of which video I mean and where I might find it again?

Great video as usual Carl. Just thinking about the SS Minnow jig... If you put fan blades on instead of handles you could have a built in dust extraction system and cooler on your lathe. Lol.

Very nice project. I was looking for a video on making the SS Minnow jig, but do not see one. Is this available somewhere? I and doing much smaller threaded items in cow horn but many of the concepts could apply quite well with a smaller scale.

    Carl,
Do you think having a dowel in the hollow section would make it easier for when you break through to the middle? Kind of like having a sacrificial piece to prevent tearout and whatnot.
Anyway, keep up the good work!
    Thanks,
    Brandon

So I'm not extremely smart when it comes to wood turning but would a sacrificial dowel make the hollow spiral easier? Especially that final cut when you would normally break through to dead space!

I saw the Video using the miliput and was amazed as well! I love your work, you do some great stuff. can I ask about your lathe? how long have you had it and what are your thought and feelings on it. I am considering a new one and am not sure if I want to go Powermatic, Robust, or an old vintage model like I can find from friends on line with all the tools from the turn of the century.

    • @CarlJacobsonthewoodshop

Thank you very much Michael! I've had the Robust for over a year, and been very happy with it! They're very well built, and have a 7 year warranty. I don't think you can go wrong. I'm a dealer, shoot me an email if you want more information, jacobson68@yahoo.com

Nice Carl. Looking forward to seeing what it becomes when it grows up.
I have done a few of these on a smaller version with 3/4" dowel rods. I then cast them in a mold for pen blanks. I use the scroll saw method from this TH-camr. th-cam.com/video/4gV1J59Ft4E/w-d-xo.html (TheMrByrom). The bonus is, I get two spirals for the price of one.
Not sure you can control the size like you have done with this method but it did work for me and some different looking pens.
    Nice looking wheel BTW.
Thanks for all of the great info you provide. JimE
