idol trainees who after years of struggle and no real success often resort to it because they usually have no other real source of earning money besides using their body or talents. Its not something that should come as a surprise, one's gotta make hard choices in life. The CEO of the entertainment company is a very representative of how some rich men who are quite predatory in nature coming from affluent social standings behave towards in general young girls/women. Notice there is nothing socially questionable that he does but from a female's point of view you will realize and sense his true motive and in the show min hee takes advantage of it to get observe and approach that idol trainee.

I love that Extracurricular didn't romanticise anything at all, they showed how the characters really are and their inner ambitions. I loved Jisoo's dreams because surrealist scenes can make up so many explanations and interpretations from it... And also how nobody is good, everyone has their sins and crimes and there's no way to defend them, but I tried to understand them in a way and see what was their motivation behind what they were doing. I really wanted Jisoo to punch Gyuri, I remember how my chest filled with rage, she made me crazy but not hateful haha

i disliked gyuri at the beginning but as the show progressed, i felt like i could understand her motivations more. shes desperate just like jisoo, but unlike jisoo she's under constant surveillance from her parents. she kept pushing him further and further because shes extremely competitive and hates to lose out on anything. she feels she always has to come out on top because of the elite perfectionist environment she grew up in. she has enough emotional intelligence to manipulate ppl but not enough to sympathize with them. i loved how the show explored all these aspects of her personality and jisoo's. it was pretty fascinating.

I also wanted to add the part where the banana boss said to Bae Gyuri that she reminded her of his wife might be a foreshadow of the second season. The relationship between the banana boss and his wife can be a depiction of Gyuri and Jisoo’s future if they continue on the sex trafficking business. Jisoo is very similar to the boss as he appears to be reliant to his wife, can be a puppy but also can transform into a wolf. The wife on the other hand is very similar to Gyuri as she is the brain and handling the business, she is also cold and indifferent.

Honestly I really enjoyed this drama, I very much into gritty and dark series such as breaking bad, fargo, barry, fleabag and euphoria. I first got into kdramas purely for the cringe drama and crackhead content, but when watching this it was very refreshing. I think its important to address such heavy topics through art, especially in a society such as Korea's which is still very traditional. Overall they portrayed this drama extremely well, its tastefully produced and written. Also the big fight scene between the gang and bullies at the end was epic, some of the best action I have seen in a series in awhile.

I watched this show when the Netflix algorithm recommended it to me after finishing Control Z. I almost ignored the recommendation because in the past I had always found kdramas to be unbearably cheesy. But I'm glad I tried this one since it really is nothing like any other series I've seen out of Korea. Both shows were extremely suspenseful and kept me binging one episode after another, but it did make for a depressing weekend. Watching two shows in a row about mostly unlikable high school students making mistakes was a bit much. But I would still recommend Extracurricular to anyone who hasn't seen it.

    • @donviajero2580

One thing that did strike me was that the extent of the bullying seemed way over the top (in both shows). I just started watching Itaewon Class and once again right from the beginning we have more extreme bullying. I went to 6 different schools in 4 different countries between 5th and 12th grades, including one in a pretty rough neighborhood in California, and in none of them was the bullying even remotely as bad as in these two shows. Is bullying really that much worse in high schools in Korea (and Mexico) than in most other countries?

This is a very informative video for anyone interested in knowing the drama's background. I have always been interested in the Korean "gang" culture. Many outstanding Korean movies managed to portray parts of it, some even based on true events>
Extracurricular came like a fresh breeze in the Kdrama scene! I enjoyed every bit of it, very well done! I hope there will be another season.

I really appreciate this thoughtful and researched video! Thank you so much! I don’t agree however that “as a normal person” I couldn’t sympathise. I think truly great storytelling makes you sympathise with characters even when they make the wrong decisions. Every time they could do better, the characters chose the wrong path and I think that’s extremely human. Especially the young girl and the idol trainee feeling pressured into doing that kind of work because of the pressures around them was so extremely relatable. I’ve seen kdramas vaguely touch on these things before but never in way that Extracurricular did it! Great show and thank you for answering my question on the function of the school police.

I loved this drama. It was so thought provoking and had such an amazing plot line. The part about each character not being truly likeable is one of the reasons why I think this drama stands out. Each character as a severe character flaw that marks their person, and is never resolved. Most plot lines work to rid their characters of their burdens and sins in a journey of becoming a better person, but in Extra Curricular, their character flaws only continue to grow and deteriorate them more as a person - ripping away all forms of restraint, empathy, control. They don't get better and there is no redemption. The ending scene also really intrigued me. It played with us, the cameras switching back and forth in perspective from Gyuri and Jisoo to the Cop; not giving us a direct answer on whether they actually turned themselves in or decided to run away again. The frantic switching of cameras, in my opinion, highlights Gyuri and Jisoo's moral struggle on whether they should turn themselves in or not. It is evident that they are both exhausted from everything that happened, and don't know what to do anymore. Either face society for the crimes they've committed and maybe gain back some of the humanity they lost, or keep running like the scared cowards they are - to run and hide instead of facing their sins. In the end they do decide to run away and it seals their fate. It truly proves that there is no redemption for them. None. That statement is both terrifying and exhilarating knowing that there is a high likely hood of a next season. How will Gyuri and Jisoo fare after turning their backs on the world? My theory is that Gyuri will convince Jisoo that society was the one that screwed them over and that they should take revenge. I don't know just my theory, but I believe if they're going down they're going to take everything down with them. And Jisoo will have another internal conflict between the part of him that doesn't want to hurt anyone one else and the other that wants to follow everyhting Gyuri says and protect his own skin. He'll push down the former, discardig his doubts as weakness and it will slowly drive him mad. I think he'll be the one to accidentally out them and end up getting shot. (just my theory). Sorry I went off on a tangent. It's hard to stop.

David. Thanks for a great presentation. I will join. There was that scene in EP.12 by the river. She is thinking of coming to Sydney (I wish!). He puts his head down. She is about to lovingly ruffle his hair. But stops herself. This is a special moment in the repressed Love story at the core of Extracurricular. She needed him to love and he needed to be loved. That moment symbolised it. She didn't ruffle his hair. The moment was missed. He looks up. She walks off. If she had shown love but she couldn't! If he had allowed himself to be loved, but he couldn't. At the heart of Korean culture this drama shows, is failure of love. The schoolteacher is kind. But school rules mean he can't love. The cop pursues justice, but not love. The school girl Miner who secretly loves Mr Lee is desperate for love. The gangsta and his mistress are beyond love (evil).
Gyuri could have saved the boy but she is too unloved herself. Korea, this drama says, is a culture that has failed Love.

I think a lot of people have questioned the authenticity of the kids' decision-making, behaviors, and motives but...I've studied human development/behavior in undergrad and now grad, and I definitely think that it was quite accurate. Their moral ambiguity, in particular, really reflects where they are cognitively as teenagers and the complexity of their respective backgrounds. Also, I feel like it's really black and white thinking to say that all of their behavior is completely inexcusable because they're making their own choices and those choices are inherently bad. It's a lot more complicated than that because of who they each are and where they are in their life. Also, when you got hella trauma, it alters the way your brain functions, and I'd say all 4 leads have hella trauma. Loved this show tho. Touched on a lot of important, intense issues in society.

This upload actually motivated me to watch the drama and now I'm greatful it did. What I don't agree with is that this show somewhat justifies criminal behaviour. I think it doesn't but rather shows how some people's lives could turn out bad if they make (or even forced to make) some wrong choices. Like you said, most of the highschooler's secret lives (except of the bully's maybe) were obviously fictional and based on pure exaggeration. Their individual problems could result into them leading adult lives like the ones of the adults in the drama. In fact, I believe the drama points out how ADULT prostitution, gangs, rich sociopaths, police negligence, domestic violence, etc do exist and it all often does derive from how trapped & neglected many people are (or feel) in nowadays societies. I found this drama more realistic than pessimistic in it's core to be honest and I won't be disappointed if there won't be a s2. Loved the open ending because it even lets some optimism in. Seo Min-hee could survive and Oh Ji-soo & Bae Gyu-ri could actually run away, reflect on their mistakes and turn their lives around. We already saw Seo Min-hee and Oh Ji-soo being regretful. Alternatively, like the motto of the drama mentions "Some mistakes cannot be erased" and people like that are screwed regardless how hard they try. It really is a masterpiece and I urge you to watch it if you haven't already. Don't be discouraged by the pacing in the first few episodes because it'll pay off later.
