On my second visit to Jakarta - the vibrant Indonesian capital- I noticed that the city has changed for the better. 7 years ago, main roads were under construction, and the city metro was not finished yet. The city was overcrowded, busy, dirty, and not very attractive. Things have changed, and it's all good.
In this video, I explain in detail why you should not book a flight from Seoul to Jakarta with a layover in Shanghai. I didn't plan my trip correctly, waiting until the last moment to book my flight, so the price of all direct flights has skyrocketed.
Despite the long flights and the adventure of connecting to the Internet in China, arriving in Jakarta was smooth as butter. The hotel was amazing, and after a refreshing night, I'm on my first day exploring Jakarta between business meetings.
First impressions - the city is up-and-coming, with many new high-rise buildings, improved infrastructure, and marvelous metro service. Flashy shopping malls, fantastic rooftop restaurants with delicious food, excellent service, and affordable prices - Jakarta is to be discovered!
I'm super excited for my 10 days in Jakarta. This is just the start; let's explore the amazing Indonesian capital.

Thank you for the tips, I will check out Chao Chao resto next time I go to Jakarta. One thing for transiting at Shanghai Airport that if you use I-phone you can not connect to the WIFI. You have to use Android to get the WIFI 🙂
I do use iPhone, I didn't know they had such restriction. I will definitely not going to switch to Android just to be able to connect to airport wifi.

many new roads/express ways for surrounding suburbs (outer ringroads) have been built for past few years easing Jakarta congestion as the cars are having option to not pass Jakarta if they want to cross to another suburbs (example Depok to Airport via South Tangerang)
that's really possitive development, I can see it gives results as traffic is still a problem, but looks like it's getting better.

Is no one talking about how he called Pacific Place Lafaiet Shopping Mall? As an Indonesia, i don't even know what is Lafaiet Mall and that Mall looks exactly like Pacific Place.
It's the Pacific Place Mall, I was missled by Google Maps when I was checking the name of the mall ;))
I still remember that Malaysian Tiktoker that gave Jakarta a 0/10 rating based on her travel experience. While honest, her review came off as someone who intentionally tried to find mistakes and nitpicks in her experience to invite the ire and clicks of Indonesian netizens. Meanwhile, this review is honest in its approach but also highlights the good and the bad. Thank you, Chris, for your review.

Ada banyak perumahan komplek elit, perumahan komplek, dan kampung suasana perumahan di kota Jakarta, jika dilihat dari atas gedung nampak padat penduduk, tapi suasananya bagus. Walaupun banyak street food lokal Indonesia yang harganya terjangkau juga. 😁

The traffic was gone bcs you visited jakarta during lebaran (ied fitr) which is the holy day of islam. During this time people goes to their hometown to see their parents and families 😊

I live in Jakarta, right at the center of the city. I'm loving it here. Many places to visit and things to do. For travellers I think it is pretty affordable. You can find food and lodging at wide price range from cheap street food to five star fine dining. Same with lodging. Despite the notorious traffic, the government is working hard to improve public transportation by building MRT, LRT, BRT, and improve walkability.
I can see how the quality of life in Jakarta has improved, and that's amazing. I want to visit again, this will be greate.
Is Jakarta getting better for tourists, or for the working class people there?
Does Jakarta have police and court system that is fair, similar to UK or America?
I was a tourist and on a business trip to Jakarta, I can only speak from that perspective. I did talk to some locals and they also think the city is getting better.

Visit other place in Indonesia like kabupaten - kabupaten
This time I was only able to visit Jakarta I will try to visit other places. I've been to Bali too, but that's another story ;-)

It’s possible. I live in Seoul, and we suffer from air pollution a lot. Sometimes it’s not a local problem only.

Hey I did eat a lot of Indonesian food, just that day we had a business meeting in this rooftop bar, it was Indonesian people who recommended it, don’t judge me for it :-))
Not worth it! Traffic is horrendous not just in Jakarta but other cities as well, Bandung, Surabaya and most importantly smoking is out of control. Even non-smoking hotels reek of cigarette smoke, everywhere. I saw so many young children smoking. Yes it also happens in America but over time cigarette smoking has reduced in America.
That's really interesting; during my 10 days in Jakarta, I didn't see many people smoking; it's actually surprising to read this! I never even smelled cigarette smoke, not to mention in any hotel I've been to.
Travel more dude! The world doesn't revolve only around you! Don't stay closed minded 😂😂😂

just so you know. the current Government installed an AI in several traffic lights last year
so yeah ... though it just helps to reduce traffic in small percentages (they said 5% - 15%) but it helps a lot.

Yes. Jakarta now is not nice at all. Even I hate living in Jakarta. The people are not nice at all. Most motorists use this big special muffler which they call brong muffler.
This muffler will shoot black smokes to the face of the people who happen to be behind the motor.
Never seen this smoke you are talking about. I do see a problem with the moto bikes and all the fumes from it, it's not very healty to ride a bike and inhale the poluted air. Hopefully, more people will switch to electrical bikes when they become more affordable.
Jakarta indeed awesome, other cities mehh... they have right to be jealous, unfortunately current administration prefer to create new city instead of elevating the one already established.
I've heard about the plance to build new capital, let see how this will play out, it might be super expenisve to achieve.

The move might be a political decision. The problem with the city syncing is there, but it's not eminent. Unfortunately, it primarily affects people who have no means to rebuild or move somewhere else.

may be not so small persent, every city needs imporovement, most places I've been to in Jakarta, were nice or decent.
Already visited Jakarta-Bandung 5 times for work. 50% of the population lives in garbage dumps without an organized sewage disposal system. 90% of street vendors live in this garbage, the cause of food poisoning.
That's makes our life really cheap

Jakarta is a dynamic city. If you have money, you can eat in comfortable, cozy places, like the ones in the video. But for those who want cheap food because to save money you buy food on the side of the road, that's an option. You can also stay in an apartment or hotel in a good area if you have money. So if you have money, why are you complaining to people who live in trash? why do you complain about those who sell on the streets? People like you are the ones who don't have money.
Jakarta is a business city, not the main tourist destination in Indonesia. So money is an important thing in Jakarta. If you don't have money, don't expect to be able to live well in Jakarta.
