    WOW! great to see this. I got my Contender in 1983 and was just a bit pissed when I realized what S&W had done to Thompson Center.

    Have had one SSK 50 frame for a couple of months, some light strikes in a SSK .357 barrel with European 38 special ammo that fired on second strike, .357 ammo no problem, early days second frame should be here tomorrow...

    Looks like ssk is making a great product. I personally have no problems with a priduct being so close to the original that it has the same issues as the original. It means you dont have to reinvent the wheel if you know how to fix the originals

    I had a Gen 1 Super 14" Bull barrel in .41 Magnum back in the day. I WAS a high pressure guy. ( Young and dumb) Never had an issue with jacketed loads, but when I shot hot loaded hard cast semi wadcutters, on some of the hottest loads, the pistol would fire, and the action would come open. I never could figure out why. I thought perhaps the recoil was enough to actuate the the opening mechanism, as no part of my hand was covering the trigger guard. But I also thought it was possible that it was actually just blowing the action open. (A disturbing concept at best)
    So I was wondering if anyone else ever had an experience with anything like that. And in case you were wondering, yes, I backed off my loads with cast bullets after that experience. I just always wondered about it, because my jacketed loads were (according to the load data) supposedly even hotter, and I never had a problem with those. I was never tempted to try any other caliber barrels, as my .41, and my buddy's .44 mag were pretty stout. I wasn't sure if I wanted to go with something like a .30-30, or some of the other fun stuff they had back then.

      I have had that happen on not just the T/C, but other break action single shots. From what I can figure out, it's do to a combination of inertia on the locking lugs and the frame stretching and then springing back. I also back off loads for all break actions now, no point it racing speed and destroying a action.

      I had a Super 14 30-30 AI barrel at one time, it was a cannon. Just wondering if the 7x30 Waters would benefit from the Ackley Improved configuration as the standard 30-30 cartridge did ??

      @@kennethhowell1272 I suppose it would, Its one of those cartridges that would see an increase in capacity by improving it more than it already has been. With everything being relative, one should see a velocity increase. There are a few improved cartridges on the 7X30 waters case out there. Of course some of these were already done before the Waters became a Factory offering. So they were original, like the Waters, done on the 30-30 case. I believe SSK did one as well as some kind, very personable fellow 🙄somewhere in Arizona, Flagstaff I believe has his name on one also. The search button on your favorite browser should give you what your asking for. FWIW, My particular barrel was to accurate to rechamber and find out, although I was there at one time in my life. I'm glad I realized, before I did do anything, that 100 fps doesnt kill them any deader.

    Ryan.. i have a question. The stainless G1's were released just before TC was sold to S&W, i believe. The very last change to the TC's were the interchangeable block under the interlock safety. Can you confirm for me whether the SSK 50 follows this pattern? I have several TC's and as far as I can tell only the stainless last issue frames had this feature. From what i could see from your video.. i do believe the ssk 50 has this block. Will this part be available for sale? I can see from some of the comments that few people understand the genius design of the G1 TC. It was chambered in some really monster cartridges, like the 444 marlin.. something the original cast frames STRUGGLED to contain. I believe the solid billett machined SSK 50 frames will be superior in strength to any of the existing original TC frames. I cannot wait to get one of these. Do you have any idea when stock will be available for sale?

    • @handgunhuntersint
      @handgunhuntersint  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes! The interlock and safety are available from SSK. We can't comment on availability, sorry. It seems that SSK is trying to ramp up production numbers, but their reliance on other shops for some of the components has created some delays.

      While we can't speak to what SSK has planned, it seems unlikely at this point. Since T/C just announced that they're going to begin production again, they will probably wait to see what's going to happen with that, first. it makes sense to keep making a clone of the original Contender, because T/C will probably only bring out the G2 Contender only. It's all just speculation at this point, though.

    So my biggest question is, what working pressure limits of the ssk action? Currently I am experimenting with a black powder cartridge on a 47 colt walker however I also rechambered a 10" contender for it and a 16" barrel sleeve for it in which I will approach the cartridge as a smaller. .452 diameter 45-70 . The cartridge is the 45-55 walker. Also I want to work a .50 caliber cartridge or two.

    • @Bhartrampf
      @Bhartrampf 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      If you are sticking with black powder, you are fine, if not, I would contact SSK, as bolt thrust, head size as well as pressure come into play.

    • @StevenMMan
      @StevenMMan 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @Bhartrampf ahh sorry I didn't say this in the comment the 45-55 walker cartridge will be loaded in the TC, and barrel sleeve for me similar as I did the 12-14" smokless powder 45-70 back in the day. The contender of the day by no stretch of the imagination is capable of 60,000 +psi of a casull. Hence my question as to the strength of the SSK action.
      By now I've completely confused everyone

    • @Bhartrampf
      @Bhartrampf 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't remember off hand what the pressure rating of the action is, I know it's pretty low, think 44 mag, 30-30 or black powder pressure 45-70. Or, about what you would do with a 45 colt or 45 colt pressure in the casuell case not Ruger loads either.

    • @handgunhuntersint
      @handgunhuntersint  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      There are multiple considerations for how powerful a cartridge the Contender/SSK-50 frames can handle. It's not only about pure pressure, but also case thrust. This is a combination of pressure and case head size. That's why a Contender can easily handle a .223 but not a .308, even though they operate at similar pressures. The best course of action when considering a specific cartridge is to contact SSK.

    • @Bhartrampf
      @Bhartrampf 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@handgunhuntersint yep, basically what I said also case head thrust and bolt thrust is the same thing. Their are formulas for this, but as we both said, call SSK!

    dangerous design with grip attached to single prong on frame, have G1, 444 marlin, few handle bolts broke, 14" bull barrel is now free to swing back & crack the shooter in the head, bad design, it's now never to be fired again!😭😭
