    Guys dont listen to him if u have a smiths sharper like the one in the video do the same as he is doing but apply little pressure while pulling thru. After 10-20 reps through the carbide course side switch to the ceramic side and do same 10-20 reps your knife will be sharpened if not try again trust me this guy is destroying his knives

    the steel does not put the edge back on the knife, it removes loose burrs and straightens the thin edge of the blade, which can get bent over to one side or the other when dragging it across a sharpening stone. this may be what you meant, but it doesn't sound it with the way you worded it. as for those knives being sharp they are not even close, If they were sharp you wouldn't have to hold the paper like you do, with a "razor sharp" knife you could hold up a piece of paper with 2 fingers and the knife would slice though the paper with no resistance with a smooth slice all the way through, not jagged like the cuts you were making.
    Using a lot of pressure when sharpening is ok to take off a lot of metal to rebuild the edge, but once it is close to sharp you only want to use a little bit of pressure to take off small amounts at a time to make the edge as thin as possible, too much pressure when it is really thin will only crush the edge and dull it.

      Thunder Chicken a sincere thank you. I own a large collection of Microtech's standard OTF style pieces as well as a few other "designer" knives, and need to sharpen several. Someone bought me this two-stage Rapala sharpener a few years back, and I was just about to start grinding away before I figured I should check and see what people think about them. Based on the comments here, it sounds like I'm better off waiting to buy a better kit, then practicing on a few cheap knives first.

    Reallly bad. That's not how you hold the paper for the paper test. The Gerber seemed to be sharper before you messed with it. You really should watch some the other videos - maybe actually learn before you try to teach.

  • @rickangus
    @rickangus 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I hope not to cause offence by disagreeing but this advice is contrary to everything I have ever learned about blade sharpening - namely that very little pressure is required to sharpen a knife blade. This is born out in the paper cut test - that blade is not sharp and is tearing the paper rather than cutting it. Best advice - view other vids on knife sharpening!

    • @dimitrijekrstic7567
      @dimitrijekrstic7567 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +rick warner you are doing better than this guy, thats for sure :D. You can use more pressure for taking off more steel, but to create a fine and straight edge that can push cut you should use little pressure and turn the knife to the other side every turn. This guy knows nothing about sharpening knives, you can see that when he says that he doesnt use the fine side when he is sharpening harder steel, thats complete nonsense because you need fine sharpening to get finer edges...not to mention that he uses carbide sharpeners... thats basically using harder metal to sharpen metal, he is really really bad and you can see that also when he cuts the paper, you are not supposed to hold the paper tightly and try to cut between you fingers...that even looks stupid. You should be testing the knife edge by lightly slicing the paper, if your edge is super fine you wont even have to slice, you will just push and it will cut.
      People please dont ever take any advice from this guy, he hasnt even tried to learn how to sharpen properly, he is destroying his knife and he just has no idea what he is talking about, steel, knives, sharpening, he knows nothing.

    there is no correct way to use a carbide v-sharpener, they take chunks of metal off the blade destroying it ( even with light pressure), like Rhys Garton said sandpaper or get yourself a spyderco sharpmaker, you won't regret it.

    To all the people saying don't use a pull through sharpener that you will mess it up is 100% WRONG if you messed up a blade using a pull through sharpener than you have no idea what you are doing even though its 100% easy to use. Are whetstones better? course they are but that is also an advanced method of sharpening. i can get my schrade knife just about razor sharp with a smith pull through sharpener no its not razor sharp but close enough. Not everyone needs a $50-200 dollar knife sharpening kit, these are perfect for the beginner. However i would say to still get a whetstone or even a whetstone kit and learn and practice.

      You are soooo wrong on this using these pull through sharpeners rips a lot of steel off your knife deforming the shape of your knives edge and it feeling and cutting sharp is just a very course wire edge that bends and rolls and chips and doesn't stay sharp long at all

    a pull through sharpener destroy knife blades. if you want a sharp knife use a flat stone I thought that this thing made a sharp edge until, I used a sharpening stone for the first time. I was cleaning it afterwards and sliced my two of my fingers. I know I was being careless but I had no prior experience with a real sharp knife. Just get a decent sharpening stone. I am using my great grandfathers oil stone guessing it is over 100 years old. Still works a treat. much better than these pieces of crap.

      This video is a terrible example of how to sharpen a knife. I'd suggest looking up how to use flat stones rather than a garbage pull-through. If you've got a garbage knife with soft steel and *softly* pull it through, you might get.. something. Most decent steels are just going to get rippled and cut like shit.
