Key to why this county is so Ineffieceint, backwards, falls behind most of Europe and less developed countries, falls behind the economies of even 'developing countires' in progress and technology is examples such as the WASTEFUL time spent at level crossings due to the Pathetic timespan between the gates down and train arrival and gates up period; at least 3 minutes before a 20mph train arrives, sometimes longer ! There are approximatley 225,000 RR grade crossings in United States where the gates / barriers are deployed 30 SECONDS to 1 Minute before the train crosses; not 3-5 minutes. There are approximately 6,000 level crossings in the UK. So you can assume they have much expertise about level crossings in the US! This is an example of why this country is crap; it's not about the excuse of 'safety' it's wasteful inefficiencies, and a backwards mindset of 'we've always done it this way so we'll keep doing it'. They might as well go back to having little lineside huts with someone to manually open a set of heavy wooden gates, than the BS of what there is now in the UK. At least it would provide many jobs. There is not a single (Britsh owned) car or truck manufacturer remaining, they're all foreign owned. You can see why.

Or just take a different route and stop complaining

@@SouthWestCrossingsUK its not about this route, it's that the gates do not need to be down that far in advance of the train. It works in far less time in other countries, so it should work here. And yes, I know a lot about railways and how signalling works.

@waynemiller7382 Well, you clearly don't know shit. If the level crossing went down later and the crossing was not clear (someone stuck in the middle, ect), then the train needs enough time to stop before the final signal, trains obviously don't stop like cars Einstein. They need at least one yellow signal before a red one in order to give them enough time to stop before the crossing.
