Love it! Way back in about 1970ish, I got lost from my parents at Universal Studios and Frankenstein's monster found me crying and panicking. He assured me he liked little girls and helped me find my folks. This little 4-5 year old started a lifelong love for him that day.
Best dinner party fact, best episode of idkat and most knowledgeable expert, and the only expert I looked for their work, and you just got a new podcast subscriber, to whoever picks the guests i need more episodes like this
Great episode. Never had any interest in Frankenstein but I paused the show to buy the book. Great chemistry with the guest. Possibly the best episode yet.
Oh, did you get around to reading it? I sort of ignored it as a kid just because I put it down to the movie, etc., and then I ended up having to teach it (after studying literature and all that first, haha), so I ended up teaching it to teens when I was in my early 30s, and it blew my mind. Hope you enjoyed/are enjoying it! Good thing for me on this episode is I actually could answer most of the questions, as opposed to most episodes where I probably do somewhere on par with Jim.
I thought this podcast started off boring and was about to go on to another one but then I read the reviews and it convinced me to keep watching. I love Dawn Brodey as a guest she was fantastic! I learned so much about Frankenstein and that dinner party fact was AMAZING!!
I really liked the Frankenstein story line in Penny Dreadful. At least The Monster is intelligent, and torments Dr. Frankenstein kinda like in the book.
I think there's a hidden one two punch to the AI stuff; lots of people are worried about an imminent self aware juncture. There's no risk of that whatsoever with any form of AI we have. Self awareness isn't required for a program to emulate the stuff we consider uniquely us, like visual art and responding to ideas. I'm willing to bet that's way, way more unsettling to most people than the idea of having to deal with a self aware digital intelligence
This was my favorite episode of all. Jim was hilarious as usual, Forest wasn't too much of an asshole and Dawn was so incredibly entertaining and knowledgable. Off to HILF I go!
Frankenstein is an allegory about Judgement as in "Don't judge a book by it's cover", it looks like a monster but is in fact a gentle nature loving soul and the judgement of the people who made him, drove his badness and also Gods judgement on Dr Frankenstein playing God.
Audioslaves show me how to live is about Frankenstein and now the lyrics to me make more sense especially the part where he says : and in your final hours I will stand, ready to begin. Nail in my head from my creator, You gave me lyfe now show me how to live. Please listen to the song. Masterpiece!!!
the best rendition of Frankenstein I ever saw was a theatre play with Benedict Cumberbatch & Johnny Lee Miller by Danny Boyle... (also: it was Lugosi who hung out with Ed Wood)
I read all of the "American Classics" (I believe that was the name?)" books, including Frankenstein. I'm just now realizing that they changed a lot to make it family friendly...thats a bummer 😅
43:02 the London Underground / "Tube" is supposedly the oldest underground train system in the world, a few years older than NYC's Subway... (although Budapest's system claims to be older than London's, IDKAT.... haha see what i did there?)
Percy Shelley (Mary's husband) & friends (including Byron) were the hellraising bohemians of their time. Drugs, freelove, alcohol, seances (although atheists)... everything to extreme. I mean, to the extreme. Nothing was out of reach. Mary was obviously part of this via her marriage. Now! Percy was a handful. Percy could be sweet & gentle (he was a romantic poet after all) but also wild/reckless & cruel & in the midst of this Mary comes up with one of the most chilling & famous horror stories of all time; It's very telling. Also. Many Americans can't use, cunt, properly. Naturally.
Firstly, methner ;p Sencondly regarding the intersting dinner facts, I wonder if Brahm Stroker new the bona fide of the short story or was it just a coincidence dracula had a familiar ie the doctor. Thirdly, Now I get the newer movies & stories interaction / relationship between Dracula and Frankenstein
Have you ever been on Stern? If not you should try because you'd blow up if he took a liking to your material and interviewed you. He'd likely replay your content afterward often even when you're not on. I think he'd like your work. Just send some of your best material to Richard, Sal, or any of his other underlings that are easier to contact and are always looking for content and talent to pitch to Howard.
The lawyers had to get DJ's ok on the story? Does that mean you had to get Mariah Carey, Packer, DiCaprio, Pacino and Beatty to sign off on the birthday gig?
Jim That hair medication ain’t working buddy, but still loved the last special.., Forest as a sneaker head I can promise you, bro there is no such thing as a cool Velcro Jordans, ask Jack for a double check he can validate
Now I have to go find a Frankenstein movie. You guys give the best (earworms?) for shit. Sorry, I'm not super intelligent. I get all my knowledge here.

Best dinner party fact, defo using that one.

And he looks exactly as described in the original literature
"I'm very peaceful...except for my revenge killings." -Frankenstein's Monster
I think that's peaceful, it's a don't f with me and I won't f with you kinda peaceful, but as long as you don't f with him you'll be fine
If "Catnip Pants" isn't the name of your next special you'll have fumbled the ball on the 1 yard line of life
This was awesome, what a great guest.
Definitely one of the best episodes!
yeah? i didnt find it much amusing :)
48:25 they did a pretty close rendition in the series "penny dreadful" it has many of these original story beats

Missed opportunity for "Al franken" as a scoring category 😂
Best dinner party fact ever!👹

Best episode ever 🙏
Dawn Brodey was great. Fun episode!
My standout favourite episodes, off the top of my head, in no particular order, are:
Bread
The Royals,
Cars
and now Frankenstein.
Link to the bread episode homie, I cant seem to find it
Frankenstein is an allegory about Judgement as in "Don't judge a book by it's cover", it looks like a monster but is in fact a gentle nature loving soul and the judgement of the people who made him, drove his badness and also Gods judgement on Dr Frankenstein playing God.
Cutting the ads out is bold AF
Should probably check out that Velcro documentary Kelly found. I just did. It takes a turn you probably won't be expecting.
I am not lying, my grandpa helped that dude build the original pacemaker. My gpa is now 94 and still lives in Minnesota.
Audioslaves show me how to live is about Frankenstein and now the lyrics to me make more sense especially the part where he says :

Nail in my head from my creator,
You gave me lyfe now show me how to live.
Please listen to the song.
Masterpiece!!!
The journey to the moon gave us velcro. Imagine the kind of fascining products that the mission to Mars will yeild
22:44 that was the funniest line I've heard in ages.
A faithful adaptation mini series would be great.
Jim should have Jackson Galaxy on the show and teach him about cats behaviors hahaha
There was a Frankenstein family. They owned a castle near Damstadt Germany, which can be visited. And is loads of fun during the Halloween season.
Darmstadt ist mir leider ein bisschen zu weit entfernt
@@nartouzumaki8232 Understood, but the Frankenstein castle is still located there.
Never knew that Frankenstein was set in Ingolstadt. If so: not Switzerland but Germany. Audi has a big factory there.
Is Edward Scissorhands technically a Frankenstein monster? Tim Burton
Yes, the difference is people initially liked Edward, and he didn't destroy his creator.
the best rendition of Frankenstein I ever saw was a theatre play with Benedict Cumberbatch & Johnny Lee Miller by Danny Boyle... (also: it was Lugosi who hung out with Ed Wood)
Absolutely agree!
In "young Frankenstein" they actually reference "victor" (grandfather) as the originator of bringing life to a creature.
She was an excellent guest
She is so compelling! Great eppy

Finally the first, as my fandom should represent. Thanks for always being amusing and irreverent 😊
I keep visualizing Forrest as a spider person because of those mic stands.
forest's anxiety > guessing games
another great one
While Sgt. Pepper was out dropping acid and making music with his Lonely Hearts Club Band, Dr. Pepper was studying hard to get his degree. Respect.
Thank you for your service, Sarge.
it's honestly disgusting though
I think both directions lead to knowledge that cannot be found in the other 🤔😜
I thought Daniel Day Lewis had settled the question of Lincolns voice
Bela Lugosi (Dracula) is the one who hung out with Ed Wood, not Boris Karloff.
Were you there?
@@theabraham8164 Yep. Now go look into it and educate yourself before you look even more foolish.
Best ep
Frank's brother Albert was a theoretical physicist.
Jack, I have a very funny chatgpt about jim. Where can I send it. Worthy of podcast. Promise.

With your cats mate. Be the one that feeds them. That’ll bring them round.
Kelly laughs at anything Jim pays, wait I meant ‘says’
Lincoln's voice was reported to have been "reedy".
Just starting; I feel like this will be something Jim knows bizarrely little or loads about.
Her Podcast HILF is pretty 👍
Frankfurter Würstchen und Bohnen .. na ja dann lieber mit Senf und Toast

Goddamn can Dawn finish a damn sentence? lol
I like pothead Jim. He seems more ahh, than AAHHH!
I had no interest in this topic but the guest was sooo good
Robocop
Sneaking in a rape joke while talking about cats :DDD
No. The Robert De Niro one is really good!
Jim That hair medication ain’t working buddy, but still loved the last special.., Forest as a sneaker head I can promise you, bro there is no such thing as a cool Velcro Jordans, ask Jack for a double check he can validate
Catnip cat pants, lol, say’s Kelly
Abby. Abby Normal.
😮
I want to know who this DJ is
DJ Qualls. He stars in Road Trip (2000), The New Guy (2002), and The Core (2003).
Dr Pepper tastes like toothpaste. Not nice at all.
I can have a DR Pepper every now and then but otherwise it’s too much
Now I have to go find a Frankenstein movie. You guys give the best (earworms?) for shit. Sorry, I'm not super intelligent. I get all my knowledge here.
The Robert de Niro movie follows the book well. The book is great too, and it's not too long or complex a read.
I was really impressed with her until she said COVID was created in a lab. Americans are so mental when it comes to conspiracies.
🤡🤡☝️☝️
its actually a fact dummy lol
Does Jim really need four co-hosts?
does anyone really care what you comment? (no)
First like bro
That'll be something to tell the grand kids.
Ah you wernt first. Lol 😂
