A musician that shall remain nameless once said to me something much like "God dammit, every time I think I catch up, Peter puts me in my place again." Literally every time he does something, it's a whole new level.
What an awesome song! You had me from "That little F***er". Yes it's not a good idea to drop the 'F Bomb' in a song but in this case it describes that one kid we all picked on while trying to grow up and I knew immediately who he was talking about. I could visualize his every being. The truth sometimes requires truthful language and this 'gem of a song' it is an exception to the rule. You inspire me Peter!
Peter what a wonderful song. You have always inspired me from the first time I saw you open for Greg Brown in Bellows falls, VT. Thank you so much for your contribution to what music is all about.
Lyrics: We used to hate that little fucker, we used to beat him up, and when he cried, it made us hate him more... I mean, Jesus, kids are awful, boys especially. We used to taunt him all the way to his screen door... But all of this was just before the war... Our little town would get all lit up on a tall summer night. The high school girls would smoke behind the store... And if you could get a car, you could go out and drive around, down to the lake, sit down by the shore... But all of this was just before the war... All of this... Everything changes, that's what they say... But oh, you believe it when the world falls away... That little fucker was brave... Turns out I wasn't. And you look what that means and what it doesn't. And the years go like they go... You rake leaves, you shovel snow... And probably you're no different than before. And the town still gets all lit up on a tall summer night. The light shines down through my window to my floor... And I think about time before the war... I think about the time...
First of all I'm totally obsessed with this song. Second of all, I can't tell if it's a mistake or the intended lyric when Peter says "and when it cried it made us hate him more" but I find that use of the word it so incredibly effective, the way it describes the dehumanization of this little boy. Thirdly, I love that when he says the phrase "down by the shore", A car passes and the sound gives the effect of waves at the shore. I fucking love this fucking song.
You are the first person to even point it out. So I guess you are in a small club. I am not at all offended by the word and don't know of anyone who would be. So speak for yourself. Anyway, I just shoot and post these songs. You might want to go to Peter's website and express your concern for language there.
Nice song, good performance, and compelling story. That being said I would have used a different word for your subject as it probably offends have your audience. But that’s just me. Otherwise good song.
Fkn perfect. I love the melody
Great song Peter- The accidental car passing by at 2:41 accents that line and
effect perfectly
