I'm so glad that you are checking out songs from the 50s and 60s. This was real music with no auto tune and all of that junk. There are so many good groups and individuals from the 50's and 60's. The Five Satins, Danny and the Juniors, Bobby Darin, Bobby Vinton and so so many more. Love to hear these.

This is one you slow dance to with your spouse after the kids are asleep. Or on a date night. Love to sing along with these songs when you hear them. Thanks for this reaction!

The Penguins were an American doo-wop group from the 50's-60's. "Earth Angel" is their biggest hit & was used in the "Back To The Future" movies.

The Doo Wop era was characterized by these romantic songs and, yes, this was the beginning of the black/white crossover and everyone listened. And remember this was before all the computer aided recording techniques. Every sound is made by a talented human. Check out The Platters...'Only You', 'Twilight Time', 'The Great Pretender' or 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes'. Tony Williams had one of the greatest voices ever.

I'm 78 and this song was popular during my time ... just so you know ... in my part of the South, this song was popular with all white kids and played on all the stations we listened to. Even though Hollywood would have you believe otherwise, believe me, we didn't care what color they were.

At high school dances, the last song of the night was either "Earth Angel" ...... or..... The Five Satins "In the Still of the Night". And that was true in the 1950s and still in the 1960s. Two classics of the era. I was lucky enough to be in high school at the time..... great memories.

Imagine slow dancing with your beloved to this song. Another similar song (for slow dancing) is "Angel Baby" by Rosie and the Originals. Many times I danced to this and similar songs with my beloved who awaits me in heaven. We were married 50 years.

A Classic! I’m 45 so I grew up hearing this on my parent’s oldies station (at that time it was 50’s/60’s) we had NYC stations. I’m pretty sure it was on all stations.
    👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
You should check out Back to the Future. Great movie. Lots of good tunes!

Do Bobby Darin singing "Beyond The Sea". Another great choice from the era of my youth. "Earth Angel" was of course first played on black stations on the west coast and soon became a hit here on the east coast. Ultimately it was played white stations and became a huge crossover hit.

I was from Brooklyn, NY. I grew up with Doo Wop music. In NYC, it was all we cared about, plus Elvis. That song may have come out in 55 but it was still popular in the 60s. How do i know? Look at my name. 🥰

This song is an example of a style popular in the first wave of rock and roll (1950s and early 1960s) known as doo-wop or streetcorner harmony. Most of the doo-wop groups were black (although there were white groups such as the Duprees and Dion and the Belmonts). They featured close harmony (influenced by the 1940s group The Mills Brothers) and most singers were high tenors (influenced by The Inkspots' Bill Kenny). Many of the groups got their starts singing on city street corners, where they might compete with other neighborhood groups. "Earth Angel" and the Five Satins' "In the Still of the Night" were often the last songs played at 1950s dances. My own personal favorite is The Five Satins' "To the Aisle."
You might want to investigate the Drifters, a group that produced many hits in the 1950s, such as "Fools Fall in Love" and "Save the Last Dance For Me".

I was born in 1962 and grew up basically in the 1970s (from age 8 to 18). While there was rock and disco, yes, we had plenty of beautiful love songs from artists like Barry Manilow, Neil Diamond, John Denver, Jim Croce, and many more. I have also gone back to "catch up" and learn hundreds of songs of the 1920's through 1960's. I am SO sad for young ladies of the last 20 years or so who don't know what it is to have love songs in their present day music. None...or damn little. Every song objectifies them and is derogatory towards them. So demeaning. My heart breaks that they don't get romance or are made to feel special through their music.
