The way Barnes moved into the middle from the wing, later in his career, shows he’s a proper professional.

A lot of the media attention was on the new signings for Liverpool but for the wider audience who were watching Liverpool for the first time that season - it must have been mind blowing when you realized Hansen, McMahon and Whelan were still there, in top form and in a determined mood. And Nicol and Lawrenson were back fit. What a team. Nicol unlucky to have a goal ruled out here.
It makes sense now how they coasted to the title. I never rated that Everton team of 1987. Liverpool threw the title away the previous season (Walsh & Molby loss of form and were dropped essentially - injuries to Lawrenson, Nicol and Beglin were a factor too). Once these things were ironed out, Liverpool would always win it back but in this case the forward line was so exceptional, they steamrolled the opposition.
if I had one retro criticism of this team and the players in this era - it would be that the finishing could have been better for the amount of chances created. The best performance I saw was the 4-0 v Derby (no cameras so I have to say it was the best!). If it wasn't for Shilton and poor finishing it should have been 10. The famous Forest game should have at least 8 as well.

I joined the Royal Navy the following day. Remember reading the match report about Nicol's hat-trick in the 'Today' newspaper the following day on the train down to Plymouth. I still have the paper as a memento!!

Was in the Gallowgate Corner to watch us get an absolute schooling. Liverpool on another planet. Sad to hear some of the chanting that Barnes and other black players used to attract at SJP. Thank God that remnant of the old days is gone, even if I do miss the terraces.

I wonder what colour they thought Mirandinha was...

Have to laugh at Malcolm McDonald's opinion that Mirandinha was a better player than Peter Beardsley. Err no, he wasn't.

I remember this well. Newcastle were quite well fancied because of Mirandinha but we completely destroyed them. Sir Trevor talking about so many match-winners but I doubt any of us expected it being Steve Nicol.

Mirhandinha was a breath of fresh air to late 1980s English football, what a terrific player he was.

Miradinha could have been a terrific player. Compared to the huge expectations laid on him his career in Newcastle was kind of a disappointment at the end. 19 goals in 54 games was not such a bad performance, though.

Venison, Beardsley and Barnes all future Newcastle United players in the next 10 years. Sadly Barnes WAY past his best by 10yrs from when this was played. Crazy to think this half the capacity of SJP the 21st Century, but still packed and with WAY WAY more atmosphere than under the ownership of that Cockney Sports Direct bastard

`Sadly Barnes WAY past his best by 10yrs from when this was played` give your head a wobble. It was his 1st season for Liverpool and he was superb.

How odd does the leazes end look...they added seats to improve the capacity while building a new stand yet the terrace below is empty and disused so they haven't actually added anything really

F me, slipping and miss-controlling everything.
P.S. I am a Liverpool follower from this period and so have total respect for the great 87-88 side, but jeez...
