This episode is very helpful.
Sounds great that you are still focusing on it even 7 years later.

Absolutely love this channel and would never have dreamed of learning what it offers. Without being nitpicky just want to point out 8 mins deep in the episode its doing the math for the mass of sucrose and the oxygen mass is wrong 11mol x 16.00g/mol is actually 176g not 171g potentially putting the sucrose mass out. It may bug you it may not just pointing it out.
Is linear algebra used in stoichiometry?
I dropped chemistry when I was 15. Now that I'm 32 - and all the pressure is off - I just like to watch these videos to learn. It makes me wonder how school can be so ridiculously ineffective. I just wished someone had explained to me then that we were trying to uncover the mysteries of the universe and it is an ongoing adventure - instead of making it feel like I just had to cram boring information into my brain....
Now I just love what John and Hank do!
Andromeda2803 I know what you mean.. I'm 26 and I want to gather as much information as I can.. because I started asking questions. In school they just put the information on the table and you have to eat it.. without really knowing what you are actually putting in your head.
The education systems really must change. They must compel children to seek the knowledge.. not force it in their heads.
Andromeda2803 I'm a sophomore in high school and I get what you mean. The entire school system is just centered on mindless interminable homework assignments, and I (and many other students) would do so much better if there was no homework, and we were just watching the Crash course videos. The world would be a much better place if John and Hank were teachers.
Andromeda2803 Same here. I watch it on lunch time. I'm 28.
Andromeda2803 just passed my high school exams. Watching this video, i remembered everyone that followed chemistry complain about how dang complicated it is, molar equations being one of the major issues. just through looking up a couple videos since i need it for university, i already understand so much of chemistry with only like 10-15 hours put in, while they've had 400+ school hours and extra work at home. School is so bloody ineffective, i actually feel really fucking embarassed that our school system (Holland) is rated really high and that STILL in this system all kids/teens spend so many years in school while basically everything could be taught within a single year. It's just a fucking waste of 10+ years of a kids' life that could be spent on work, discipline, self-improvement and far deeper knowledge and understanding of all subjects now taught.
+Yuri Nate ikr especially math classes
they give you random formulas w/o proofs
Shout out to all the students watching this series coming up to their chemistry exam XD
+TheGamerWith(No)Brains yup AS level/A-level chem anyone? :/

i have my practical for AS chem on thursday
School systems suck. I can watch these chemistry crash course videos and learn more effectively in less time.
Thankfully, my physical science teacher agrees but has to follow the system to keep his shirt.
The only homework he gives us is to watch these videos.
+Jose Martinez Are you from Singapore? bc your dp hahaha x
whats dp? And, its you're*.
+Jose Martinez it's 'your' bc 'dp' refers to display picture and is a noun, hence 'your' as it shows possession.
Stephanie Lim that makes sense. no, i just really liked the picture.
+Jose Martinez Its the funding that is the problem. Here in Mississippi we are trying to get our public schools funded with "Initiative 42" which, if it passes, will force the legislation to provide the exact amount of money that the law states we should receive. At the moment, public schools in MS receive far less than the law says we should have. And yet you still see people actively putting out advertisements that slander Initiative 42 because people are stupid.
Is it weird that I find Hank so relaxing and will literally choose to watch these videos without an exam deadline to consider?
Keeps my sanity too.
Indeed, I am watching this and taking down notes while being home quarantined.
My chemistry teacher is really mean so I keep waiting for you to yell at me and get mad but then I remember this is a video. And you are a nice person. And suddenly chemistry isn't as scary so thank you.

Im Onkaar did you gain what you wanted from that?

I wish I could have had someone like you as a chemistry professor. You do a great job of making these lectures easier to understand.
***** still, I like they way he lectures.
Most instructors are just following a set of lectures on a textbook. This is why most f them don't really understand what they are teaching. How is it hard to have a degree in education when all you have to do is go to class everyday, but professors who have a PhD are another case.
Its a shame its only a crash course, ynow? I can't imagine how much I'd learn if he actually gave the class xD
It would be so awesome to have a teacher woth thia teaching style.
Agree, though I am afraid that I won't be able to catch up since there is no replay button in class. 😂
The key to all scientific advancement: many many strokey beard meetings
If there was no beatdstroking, we would have been in bronze age now..
ha ha
women too.
i'd give this a like, but it's copied =-=
@@KingOfShenanigan All women have light fluffy facial hair. Its not profoundly dark and thickened (terminal hairs) like it often happens in men due to testosterone. But women have some facial. Vellus hair.

What I learned from this video:
Hank can't drink tea properly
It should be 384g (12 mol of 0_2) at 11:36 not 348g (12 mol of 0_2) right?
Uzumaki Naruto That's what I'm getting as well.. Easy mistake transposing numbers I suppose?
Uzumaki Naruto I got the same result, it's a shame that this kind of comments aren't the most popular, maybe because not everyone is pausing the video every second just to check and recreate all the data.
Uzumaki Naruto Typo, probably.
Uzumaki Naruto 11*16 is 176, not 171. That's one issue.
Octavio Reyes well at least right now this comment is the second top comment in the section, so i guess there's that... though the top comment goes to Planes for saying _"I struggled so hard with this shit my sophomore year in high school."_ so i totally understand.
".. bunch of guys stroke their beards..." . Poor Marie Curie, everybody forgets about her ;(

She probably stroked her beard too

Face it, you're here because you didn't study for your preAP chem final tomorrow. Welcome to cramming hell.
I do have a preAP chem final tomorrow omfg

yup
I actually don't start the class until next week
actually its a fuckin college level intro class and my teacher can't speak fucking english
He should do a crash course for algebra and higher

Stoichiometry is the bane of my existence, so thank you for this! And yes, I'm definitely cramming last minute by binging these videos!
I struggled so hard with this BULLSHIT my sophomore year in high school.
Same right now
Amazingness in Progress I never understood what's so hard about this. The most complicated portion of Stoichiometry is equation balancing, the rest is pretty self explanatory

There is a calculation error here at 8:03 . 11 mol x 16.00 g/mol is 176 g. However, for whatever reason, your grams for sucrose were correct
As I'm learning about chemistry, I find it really cool when I can look at the ingredients in a food or even the back of the water I drink and find out what's in it with my new found knowledge.
You just explained thus better in a 13 minute video then my teacher has in 4 weeks.
I have a feeling your videos are going to be saving me this year.
At 11:39s there is a typo guys, it almost caught me out. Instead of writing 384g as the mass of oxygen the animated slide says 348g. My calculation does work with the 384g though. Thank you very much Hank it's fun studying with your teams videos! :)
You sir are about 70% of the reason I just passed my chemistry placement exam. Thank you sir! I haven't touched a lick of chemistry in years.

Don't be:
Remember two things:
1 Mol is 6.022 * 10^23
and that AMU is basically how much it weighs in grams after multiplying by one mol.
Confused? One mole of an element with an AMU of 57 would weight 57 grams, one mole of water is one hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms, which equals 34 grams.
hey dude, you actually seems to get this lol. do you know much about naming compounds?
I could help with naming compounds, depending how difficult they are.
I'm stuck on trying to learn how to name covalent compounds specifically. Like sufulric acid, and phosphorus acid, stuff like that
I have no idea how to name any compounds, but for acids, to name any acid:
For binary acids(containing two elements, hydrogen and the other element)
*Add the prefix _hydro-_ , and change the element's ending from anything to _-ic_, and then add _acid_ as another word.
For example
HCl becomes _hydro_chlor_ic_ acid
HBr becomes _hydro_brom_ic_ acid
HI becomes _hydro_iod_ic_ acid
Not sure about polyatomic ions though. If the ion contains an _ate_ as a suffix, change that to _ic_ and add the word acid.
If the acid contains a polyatomic(molecule) ion with the suffix _-ite_, simply change _-ite_ to _-ous_ and add the word acid.
For example
H2SO3 becomes sulfur_ous_ acid
HNO2 becomes nitr_ous_ acid
Naming bases is easier. Just use the name of a chemical and then change the ending of a non-metal element to _-ide_
For example:
NaCl becomes Sodium Clor_ide_
If the base contains OH-, then simply name the metal, then add hydroxide
NaOH is Sodium _Hydroxide_
KOH is Potassium _Hydroxide_
For bases without Hydroxide Ions(OH-), then you're on your own.
Anything else, that's the limit of my knowledge.
Try these handy resources

If you don't get the terms, a quick google search will help.
If these videos had been around in 2007, I wouldn't have failed my AS Chemistry exam by 3 points, and my life would have probably taken a massively different direction.

"the mole is like our chemical rosetta stone"
I really like the way Hanks talkes about chemics sometimes.
starting a crash course playlist at midnight is dangerous...
This was so helpful. I'm so glad these videos exist honestly, my chem teacher somehow manages to make simple concepts super hard so now that we're at stoichiometry... let's just say I am super thankful that these videos are available.
it is hard to focus on the material in the video because i am in awe of how much effort goes into these videos
I am here because I have a stoichiometry test in 15 minutes. I love you, guys. Thank you, thank you, thank you. 😭😭🙏🏿
If I really burn 5g of sugar every couple of minutes then I could eat the whole willy wonka chocolate factory in a day and chemistry says i be fine lmao
Next make a video about how to stay awake during chem lectures....
You guys made a mistake. at 11:40 the 12 mols of O2 is supposed to be 384, not 348
+Jsunshine013 I caught that as well. there is another error at 8:03 it says 11mol x 16.00 g/mol is 171 g, when it is 176 g. However, his overall calculation was somehow correct.
it's probably a typo
I thought I was wrong thanks so much!
the way you built up to the explanation of the mole and actually included the connection between AMU and Avagadros number was exactly what I needed. Thank you crash course. Thank you for not making me a chemistry equation robot.
We worked on stoichiometry for a year in class. At the end of the year, there were still a significant amount of students who didn't know what a mole is or why a mole of an element weighs that certain amount. This video could have taught any student , who really wants to learn, all of that which they have been unable to learn in a full year, in 30 minutes and perfectly. Thank you for these videos. Your lively approach, organized descriptions and the amazing presentations work wonderfully together to really make education "come alive".
Im studying for my entrance exams for university and this is helping SO MUCH. I haven't done chemistry since 10th grade. Thank you!!
This channel is legitimately my favorite thing ever. Being able to A. Procrastinate my homework like I (stupidly) tend to do, while B. Actually figuring out what's going on in class, and C. learning by on of my favorite people in the world as I D. Can use it to actually do my homework for real is unbelievably fantastic. Thanks, Hank!
Hank, I am doing chemistry through correspondence and had studied for the unit 1 test using my readings and supplementing your course to help whet my appetite for chemistry. I ended up watching your entire chemistry series and went in to write. Unbeknownst to me I accidentally received the unit 2 test which I had NOT studied for whatsoever and finished it by grasping at topics I had remembered from your videos. I got a 92% on a test because of you and your brilliant team.
Thank you
Jasper
I cried during my last chemistry test. Hopefully this will help?
Me too just now once I realized how bad I did
I don't comment on a lot of videos but this has without a doubt saved my grade in Chemistry! I am learning more from these 12 minute videos than I have in my entire Chemistry course. Thank you crash course, and thank you Hank!
Did... Did hank just comment on the fidelity of a carbon isotope? That carbon isotope can bond with whatever it wants without your judgments!
Crash Course is our quarantine savior.
This is the only way that I can feel prepared for my tests. I feel like I remember so much more from CrashCourse that I do from worksheets and practice problems.
Words cannot describe how much i hated this in chemistry
lol got my final tomorrow still cant do it, this is my last hope
I took AP chem this year and without these videos I would be completely lost. Thank you for making these videos!
I've never taken chemistry before so this series has been great, but this episode confused me. Something tells me I am going to have a rough time moving forward.
trust me it's alot worse in a REAL chem class
We chem teachers don't usually throw this stuff at you until at least halfway through the year, so don't feel bad.
@@coloraturaElise Got thrown it at the start.
I love these videos! He just explained in 12 minutes what took my teacher literally two and a half months to finish with, and he explained it in more detail!!
I am taking the PCAT today and I am using this as a refresher for general chemistry. Crash course is a lifesaver!!
I feel like a part of you made this video to justify adding another packet of sugar to your tea. Even if you didn't, I'll definitely use it as such.
Next time you eat sugar: hyperventilate
I know I definitely will. High five.
I have to admit, I find the first type of mole - the tunnel digging kind - easier to understand.
I have watched soooo many videos on stoichiometry, and this is the first video where I actually understood what’s going on completely
I´ve only been following you for 3 months and I have to say that i have learnt more with you than a whole year and a half with my chemistry teacher
I took my AP chemistry my junior year and watching all these videos helped me get a 5! Thank you so much ❤️ I’m currently re-watching all these videos to help me prepare for college lol
You saved my chem grade this whole year
You made being a chemistry teacher a lot easier with these videos. THANK YOU!
Hank, I love your creativity, hilarity and wit in every one of your videos! I sometimes wonder what the process is for making these. I can see how much you effort and dedication you put into these videos, and your passion for science and teaching. Although I cannot remember even 1/3 of what I'm initially taught in class, I've come to really enjoy chemistry because like you say, it is the foundation of everything. I'm taking chem 100 in college and I believe I'll be watching these until (and after) I graduate. I'll also be showing these to my future kids, and by that point we'll all be old fashioned. Also, where is that shirt from?
The method of teaching you use in your shows makes it easy to follow up and understand.
I only wonder if you can try and give some form of exercise, so we can practice what you taught us.
Watching these videos while taking my college chem class is so helpful! Thanks Hank!
I think the thing I admire most about Hank is his elevation of trolling to a fine art form with a skill and subtlety that would have made Mozart blush. Especially knowing how a lot of high school classes watch these, he walks right up to the edge of a dirty joke, winks, and walks away. I love it!
Great video! So glad I stumbled across your channel!
There is a typo at 11:40 as 12 mol of O2 is 384g (as you did say), not the 348g written on the slide.
nothing was understood by me
hope you’re doing well, hank! i’ve been watching your (and john’s) videos since forever
12:46 Video told me more than one hour and 30 min of chemistry in high school. thank you TH-cam
I liked this video a lot better than the previous one explaining electrons. I get math, but electron shells and orbitals are confusing!

The best way to approach stoichiometry in a few easy steps..1. balance the equation (if its not already) 2. convert the amounts given (usually grams) into moles
3. while everything is in moles you can determine how much moles would be used or formed for the compound in question. Straight forward. No confusing conversion table. Your welcome.
ugh my chem teacher takes points off if we don't use that stupid conversion table. I wish I could just go with this.
Thank you Hank really. I never understood my chemistry teacher and I WAS lost on this part of the course. Thanks to you now I can easily understand what it is about.
Bless this channel for helping me understand things that I don't when it comes to science

Don't worry, like arsenic, eventually you'll build up a tolerance to that stuff. Drink up!
Sir Francis Actually you don't build a tolerance to arsenic. Arsenic is a heavy metal, and heavy metal poisoning builds up over time to kill you slowly. It was in fact the advantage of that toxin in the renaissance era; the fact that it would seem like a slow death to disease. The only things you can build a resistance are the receptor mediated toxins, or the toxins that can be flagged and destroyed by the immune system; something like proteins. Definitely not arsenic.
Although of dubious source

I'd think you are right though, not safely.
Currently using your videos to refresh over quick general chemistry for the MCAT. They’re fast enough that I can watch while I eat or during my scheduled breaks! Crash Course far exceeds Khan Academy...much more exciting and full of meaningful images to help teach you through everything! Thank you!
I'm in 7th grade and I can completely understand this guy. He does such an excellent job explaining the topics. I just hope what I'm learning now will stick because from what I've seen public school chem. teachers don't seem like the best and I want to be prepared.

These videos are amazing! I took chemistry in secondary school, but this series had helped cleared up what I misunderstood :D

I don't know if anybody else with Auditory Processing Disorder is watching this but if you are I would definitely recommend putting on the captions and playing the video at 0.5 speed. it may sound like he is kind of drunk but it really helped me :) at first I couldn't understand a word he was saying because he talks so fast but after I made these changes, I finally understood. Hoping to ace my stoic test tomorrow!

I was doing the math, following along, but at 8:00, shouldn't Oxygen figure out to 176?
The sum total of the grams when I use 176 comes out to 342.296g, like your sum total there, but when I use 171 grams of oxygen, like you wrote in the video, it only comes out 337.296.
