Charley was such a great man! Proud to know that he was a fellow Mississippian! Hank Williams died on January 1, 1953. Charley was playing minor league baseball at that time, so that probably explains why he never met Hank.
Lord we lost a good one when we lost Charley.💔💔💔 I've lived in Tennessee my whole 66 years and his music has been a part of my love for country most of those 66 years.
Charlie Pride was only 10 years old when Hank, Sr. died. What many don't know or remember is that Charlie played professional baseball for about a decade before an injury turned him toward his music career. I had the joy of seeing him perform at least 5 times at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in the old Astrodome. The craziest party in town in the skyboxes each year. Mink western cut vest, diamond studded, dinner plate size belt buckles and boots and hats worth more than my salary. Wouldn't trade the experience and memories for anything. Happy Sunday everyone.
@@RockN2Country Very lucky. He performed annually at the Rodeo. My company and many of my clients had skyboxes for the entire week of the Rodeo and I usually had invites to attend every evening. I always made sure I had an invite the night Charlie Pride performed. Gotta support my fellow Mississippian (not that he need another fan!)
Reminds me of growing up singing at work. As teens friends and I would just break out in song, whatever was popular on the radio at the time. Stocking groceries, building homes, working on equipment. All the old scenes come back to mind. What a feel good song.
Hank inspired all the great country artists. Every once in a while you have to listen to a light hearted song. “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road” by London Wainwright Is one you have to hear!
Oh, stop everything. Dead Skunk was our closing number. We also sang Roll in my Sweet Baby's Arms and In the Pines. My husband and I are still laughing. Don, you must play Dead Skunk.
I've been a Charlie Pride fan forever. The first time I saw him was in Norfolk Va. in the late 60's or early 70's. He was still in his uniform. Wished I had had my picture taken with him. He came outside where the fans was lined up and talked to us. So nice. Never heard this song before. TY
My favorite Charley Pride song is I'M JUST ME. I used to pick and sing his songs A LOT. I'm not able much anymore but how I loved singing them and Merle Haggard songs. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Charlie was only 19. when . Hank died. Charlie’s early life was spent as a semipro baseball player and did not begin his music career until after Hank’s death.
Hank died in 1953. Charly was probably in his early teens at the time. He wasnt a big country star until the sixties, so no way to get to know Hank except thru his music.
Since you’re on a roll with Hank SR pleassssse check out “The ghost of Hank Williams” by David Allan Coe...btw it’s not the popular song “The Ride” which is also about Hank also sung by David Allan Coe.....th-cam.com/video/5KsA_ylC_5k/w-d-xo.html is the version you should react to

Such a beautiful song and Charlie's voice is one that always outshines others.
They never met because Sr died in ‘53 and Charlie didn’t record his first song until ‘66

Aslo! Many don't know that it was Red Sovine that invited Charlie to come to Nashville....
@Tupelo Honey Five times? You're the leader in the clubhouse with those numbers. :-)

There’s a little bit of Hank in every country singer. After nearly 70 years, the biggest stars are still doing tributes to Hank Williams.
Thank you again Don! Keep up the wonderful work!
I still love to hear Charley sing. I'm working on putting all my music in our spare room so I can enjoy it.
