    I recently started working at the Kempton Steam Museum near London UK. Here we have two fine examples of the Triple Expansion Steam engine that were used to pump water supplies to London. One of them, named Sir William Prescott, was restored and has been run regularly for the public's enjoyment and education. The other engine named after his wife will soon also be restored to working order. Our engines feature two flywheels each of which has a gear embedded to allow the steam barring engines to get it started. Oil is pumped up to the top so that gravity can feed the bearing oil via adjustable valves.

    Senor, I have been looking thru dozens of videos tonight, searching for a clear view of the eccentrics and reverse linkage for an engine of this type. Your work thrilled me to no end to find ! I shouted "EUREKA!" at 0100 in the morning! Such a wonderful, simple and clear illustration!

    Thank you for sharing this with us. It was very educational and a very beautiful way of explaining how this type of steam engine work. The old steam engineers would be proud of you. Those guys did amazing feats of engineering with slide rulers and drafting equipment. Both of which is a almost art now. Granted we have better equipment. But we are losing the ability to imagine and draw things on paper.

    Thank you Jose. I became interested in the Triple expansion engine from the one installed in the 1912 Battleship USS Texas. It seemed so enormous and complicated when I first saw it. I then became fascinated by the use of the design in similar ships, both large and not so large ... and in land base uses such as powering large water pumps. But I still had difficulty understanding how the steam was distributed and how the pistons worked. Your video makes those operations very clear. Thank you. Where I first saw complexity I now see simplicity. Like you, I am in awe of the early engineers who designed these magnificent machines. Thank you so much for taking the time to explain these engines. :)

    2:56 I wish to point out that RMS Titanic used a steam turbine to drive her centerline screw. Reciprocating engines turned her port and starboard screws only.

    Nice! Capturing the power of expanding steam in three successive stages reminds me a bit of how jet engines work -- the exhaust gasses driving the high pressure turbine which spins the high pressure compressor, then passing through to a mid pressure turbine which drives the mid pressure compressor, and finally to the low pressure turbine which drives the front fan. Each stage extracts the remaining energy from the exhaust gasses as they expand and pass through.

    This was not the exact same Double Acting Triple Expansion Engine that was installed on the WWII Liberty Ships. The Throttle Wheel did not influence the ship's Propeller Speed or it's Propeller Rotation Direction through the Stevenson's Reversing Gear Linkage. Rather, the Throttle Wheel controlled the Throttle Valve located up towards the HP Cylinder's Steam Valve Chest. To put the ship in Ahead, Neutral or Astern, there was a Reversing Wheel that activated the direction of the Stevenson's Gear.

    On marine steam engines that I have sailed with the ahead and astern eccentrics were not used to control the engine speed,a separate steam regulator wheel and valve was used.cheers Roly 🇬🇧.

    I'm modeling one of these in Blender that will be used in my ship I'm building.The ship will be a Roblox showcase game that you can walk through the go into a bunch of different rooms. One of things I want is for people to able to go into the engine room and for there to be a working, mechanically accurate engine.I spent a long time trying to find info on the reversible slide valve mechanism.This is the most helpful thing I've come across in terms of how the engine's linkage works.

    Excellent for showing the valve gear. You did a good job of that. You didn't show the sequence of steam being allowed into and out of the cylinders, and show how the valve gear in half speed position would allow less steam into the cylinders. No video has shown me that yet. I want to also see what happens to the steam at the cylinders when in neutral; it must bypass the power piston cylinder to allow no piston stroke motion. Could you show this to me. In the Titanic, steam intake started before the piston reached the end of it's stroke, therefore increasing steam pressure before the power stroke was started in either direction. Also, please use Google to get the spelling of the words correct; it will correct you if you misspell it. CYLINDER, NOT CILINDER. Aarre Peltomaa of Mississauga, Ontario

    Great effort... One of the best available video on internet about triple expansion engine... However if you have shown that slide valve or piston valve mechanism in a little bit more details, it would have been phenomenal.

    Me alegra ver que vuelves a las andadas, Pepe. A pesar de tu merecido reposo estival no dejaba de temer que hubieras podido tener algun arrechucho, pero veo que sigues en forma. Estupenda presentación la de las máquinas de vapor de triple expansión. Al igual que tu, admiro a los ingenieros del XIX y de la primera mitad del siglo XX, aunque eso no quiere decir que los que hemos venido detrás fueramos peores, aunque sus logros nos hayan servido de inspiración.
    Supongo que el hecho de que hayas escrito el vídeo en inglés se deberá al aumento de subscritores que usen ese idioma. Y respecto a la propia animación, me permitiría hacerte un par de consideraciones que me gustaría que comentases: Una es que no creo que sea definitorio el decalaje a 120 º de los cilindros para iniciar el movimiento del motor independientemente de su posición. Lo digo por dos motivos; el primero porque el inicio de la llegada de presión a los cilindros no es simultáneo. El que inicia el movimiento (por las buenas o por las malas) es el de alta presión, que es el primero que recibe el vapor al ponerse en marcha (a no ser que exista un sistema que inicialmente alimente a los cilindros al alimón con los flujos y presiones de vapor nominales para cada uno). El otro motivo es que pienso que el decalaje - debido a su simetría - está previsto para minimizar las vibraciones, al igual que ocurre en el caso de los motores multicilindro de combustión interna.
    Otra consideración es que no me parece necesario el control de velocidad en cada cilindro. Si el cilindro de alta presión ya lo tiene, él mismo ira gobernando el transvase de vapor a los demás cilindros en función de la rapidez de su carrera.
    Te comento además que, en el caso del Titanicse implementaron aún más mejoras en este sistema. En el Titanic existían dos motores (uno para cada una de las dos hélices tripala laterales) que eran de triple expansión, pero de cuatro cilindros. La zona de baja presión se repartía en dos cilindros para mejor aprovechamiento - y supongo que de paso, evitar un excesivo aumento del diametro de los cilindros. Pero no sólo eso: además el vapor remanente a 9 psi era dirigido a una turbina que movía la hélice central cuadripala. Así que el vapor entraba a 215 psi y salia a 1 psi ¡A eso le llamo yo ordeñar bien la vaca! ¡Chapeau por los ingenieros eduardianos!
