Spiderverse spoilers ahead: Hobie being a variant of the original 616 Prowler makes his connection to Miles and his decision to help him much deeper. In my second time watching the film, it was very interesting watching the subtle ways he tries to help Miles, from teaching him new ways to control his powers, trying to persuade him to go home, and casually collecting scrap parts to create the bootleg watch.
When they announced who would be playing Spider-Punk, I thought for certain it would just be stunt casting like Nicholas Cage in the first movie. Imagine my surprise when he turned out to be critical to both the plot and character development. He was only on screen for a very brief time, but boy did they maximize every moment. It's only on repeat viewings that you realize he was nudging people toward rebellion from the beginning. He wasn't stealing tech just to cause chaos, he knew his little insurrection was going to need a watch.
