      @lako lako Maybe.... The company that retails them for $225 may have spent a ton of money R+D. Maybe the $25 stole the design. These are all questions that we have to ask. If this was a VCDS tool, Id happily spend the money. Here I am mixed. And probably a hypocrite LOL

    I'm 99% sure they came from the same factory. Both are made in China by factory we'll call X. The cheap ones were ordered in bulk from X by some company A that sells them on ebay. The second was ordered by some company B to be made to higher standards and the X just polished it (removing some metal, hence wiggle) and painted it gloss. Afterwards the B decided that their paddle shifters are the best on the market and require a hefty premium. Also since they're more expensive it means less customers, so smaller orders, so more expensive, you get the feedback loop. In the end B ends up charging a lot more than A for a product that's marginally better. That's how those things happen.

      No I don't think they are. The cheaper ones are likely cast and pressed however the expensive ones are likely CNC Milled. These processes are vastly different and while casting is much cheaper, it is only feasible for high quantity production. My guess is that the expensive ones were a specially milled, low production design and model which the cheaper ones copied and mass-produced for a lower cost.

    I'm surprised more manufacturers don't put more effort into paddle shifter design and quality on performance vehicles. That's one thing Alfa got right on the Giulias equipped with paddles. The OEM aluminum paddles look and feel amazing. Also, $250 for those paddles is ridiculous. Even if it's entirely manufactured in the U.S. it shouldn't be anywhere near that price. For $240 I bought an entire coolant reroute kit that was CNC machined and anodized in the U.S.

    I got the stick on kind (look exactly like the ones you didn't install, but mine had the right cup shape) for $10 on aliexpress. The machined edge gives a glare at certain angles, which I don't like, otherwise I think they fit in nicely with the Mk7 GTI since it has that brushed aluminum style finish where the R has the piano black. I was also worried about them falling off, especially with this summer heat. But I gave the factory ones a good cleaning with alcohol to get all the dirt and oil off before the install, and the 3M has served me well for 6 months so far. Of course, they're probably going to fall off when I get back into my GTI later today - but if that happens I think I might snag a set of those $25 ones.

    The stick-on paddle extenders in the video are for a Mk6 style steering wheel. Sadly, on Mk6 all paddle extenders are stick-on because the shift button design prevents punching out the paddle retainer hinge without removing an airbag, then media-button assembly, and finally unscrewing the paddle shifter assemblies. Not every driver is ready to do all this in order to install a convenience accessory, so manufacturers stick to a stick-on option.

    Does each paddle button card have two actual buttons wired in parallel for redundancy? It looked like it.

    • @FeralEngineer
      @FeralEngineer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, it's an interesting design. On Mk6 there is a single big button on the PCB. By the way, speaking of redundancy - the paddle shifters on MK6 are interestingly overengineered. They have a logic PCB inside them that modulates a signal within a 3-wire LIN-bus, dedicated for each shifter and controlled by "media buttons / paddles controller" that further converts all the inputs i to CAN-bus signals. The controller governs two completely separate LIN-buses, one for the left shifter and the other for the right shifter, but also has resistance-measuring circuits for multimedia buttons. This way, the electronic protection against paddle shifter malfunctions (switch stuck on, switch stuck off, unstable signal, paddle shifter disconnected, more than 1 wire is broken) is made on program level. If the controller detects such an event, it will immediately deactivate the problematic paddle shifter and write down an error with the exact cause of malfunction.

    The glue-on shifters shown in the video are for Mk6 paddles. I've used exactly the same ones for some time, but got rid of them because they were offset too far towards the dashboard. So, while downshifting in turns, my hand inavoidably interfered with a turn signal lever. "Shift, blink, turn - choose two" - that's not an ideal combo for daily driving.

    the chap express versions fitted super fast and feel magic, I do not see the point in spending another $200 for the more expensive set when there both aluminium and the same profile,. For $225 id expect carbon fibre

    Hi, thanks to your video I managed to get mine installed lol. But they’re a little wiggly. Now I was wondering how could I correct that issue, do you have any ideas? Thanks in advance for your answer and thank you again for the video!

  • @braddowns17

    For $225 I could paint the $25.00 one gloss black or even powder coat it.
    Heck I could by a powder coating system and a small oven to bake it on for less than $225.00

    I think the cheaper one looks better as well plus like you said it doesn't wobble plus 200+ is ridiculous for a set of aluminum paddles

    I have the double sided tape ones. And I love them! I haven’t had any issues with them. They are on there. I have hit them getting out & in my GTI and they haven’t came off lol... if you have a DSG I would recommend them! It looks good and it is so much easier to shift. I guess the weight of them but it is easier to push. If you know what I mean.

    • @damiendegrasse
      @damiendegrasse 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Some of them use proper 3M tape and I'd never recommend using that stuff unless you want to ruin the factory parts, just spend the 10min to remove the pins and get a much better result.

    Holy crap I can’t believe someone can actually charge over $200 for something so simple and cheap to manufacture. I mean I could literally make the same exact thing in my garage with the tools and materials I already have, for free.. Even if I had to buy the material and paint it would still be under $10. That just blows my mind.

    If the expensive one had the R&D put into it.
    Why does it wobble?
    even accounting for the coatings, this is apart of the R&D cycle.

    Great video, AWESOME upgrade ve the stock ones...
    Quick question though, since I don't see anyone mentioning it. I have a VW CC and the paddle shifters illuminate at night at + & -.
    Don't they illuminate on this Golf too, assuming it has the digital cluster and its a newer model and all?
    So replacing these will it take off that feature?

    I have an audi a3. I bought 20$ ebay stick on shifters 3 years ago. Never came unstuck, never had an issue, they dont wiggle or anything. Paying 200+$ for a stupid paddle shifter is just ridiculous when the cheap ones work exactly the same if you stick them on carefully
