    The impression I get from the world map teleport, is that SMB3 might have originally meant to have had much more of a board game motif. It seems very similar to the kind of thing that would have been in the later Mario Party games. I kind of wonder if the original idea of Mario Party came out of such scrapped ideas.
    Of course, this is pure speculation on my part.

      The die roll lends credence to that. Of course, if Mario was originally intended to jump around a map according to rolls that is a much different game with a different design. Probably too risky to pull off and be fun.

    Wow, this was amazing. It made this so easy to understand. I'll admit I got a bit confused when I first read the page about the unused bonus games but I understand it now.

    Possible insight into the dice game text: "kagi" is translated as "key" by GlitterBerri, which *is* the most likely translation in context, but it could also mean "lock" or "hook" due to the ambiguity of the writing system the game uses.
    No clue as to what "roll a 1 to get 1" means, though. A native speaker might have more insight.
    Edit: The placeholder text on modes 3 and 4 also indirectly implies how the dev team did placeholders: they're う and え repeated, which are the third and fourth letters of the Japanese alphabet respectively (sort of - the Japanese alphabet "order" isn't really set in stone like in English)

      Interestingly, I imagined that if it was "key" (and "lock" would work here as well) that it might have applied to the "locks" that exist on the world map (that are generally broken by e.g. defeating Boom Boom.) It's possible that was the originally intended way to break locks.
      Also interesting about 3 and 4, because coincidentally, if you're using the English font, the letters are all Cs or all Ds, respectively. So I had a feeling it was a "3" and "4" sort of marking.

      Probably not a coincidence! The English font probably just overwrites the Japanese font in order. I wonder what character 0 is - space maybe?
      Incidentally, if the "kagi" isn't an item but rather an action, it's more likely to mean locking rather than unlocking - my guess would be that it gave you a key for those gates, rather than unlocking them directly (or you were supposed to be able to block off Hammer Bros or something by locking the gates back I guess)
      Edit: When thinking about what "roll 1 to get 1" might mean, specifically your hypothesis that it's a somehow unfinished form of "roll 1 to get a 1-up", I think I may have stumbled on an interesting space-saving measure in the Japanese version - is there any chance you have a complete text dump of the JP version? Or failing that a screenshot of one of the letters from Peach, which would be most likely to confirm or deny my hypothesis.
      Edit 2: Looked it up, my hypothesis was false - which means it's extremely unlikely that that was in fact an unfinished/placeholder version of 1-up. It's a bit complicated to explain if you don't know Japanese, but the short version is that the only reason you'd need to abbreviate that is if your font doesn't have a certain character - Mario 3's font does, and if they changed the font at some point to include it (after they scrapped the minigame) then the text would most likely just be unreadable due to remapping.
