AS AN SANTA FE EMPLOYEE 1964/95 I HEARD STORIES OF THIS EVENT, BUT THIS TIME I HEARD THE COMPLETE STORY! WORKING IN THE LOCOMOTIVE DEPARTMENT , I HAD A RELEIF JOB OF RIDING PASSENGER LOCOMOTIVES AS AN TROUBLE SHOOTER IN EVENT OF MECHANICAL OR OPERATING PROBLEMS! MY TERRITORY WAS KANSAS CITY AND NEWTON/ MARCELINE MO. IN THOSE DAYS THE SPEED LIMIT WAS 90 MPH, WITH THE OVERSPEED TRIP DEVICE ON LOCOMOTIVES BEING SET AT 100 MPH. WHEN BEHIND SCHEDULE, THE SPEED LIMITS WERE FUDGED A BIT TO MAKE UP TIME, RUNNING AT SPEEDS THAT WOULD MAKE THE 100 MPH WARNING WHISTLE PEEP A BIT AT 99 MPH! THESE DAYS I SIT IN MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT /BAR NEAR MILEPOST 34 , AND LISTEN TO THE FREIGHTS ROLLING BY, 50 FEET AWAY! I WONDER, HOW DID 99 MPH SOUND IN THERE AT THAT TIME??
Well done, interesting story. I really enjoyed your including newspaper accounts and scenes from the movie. Your channel just keeps getting better and better and I look forward to the next adventure.
As an avid collector of unusual trivia facts, I cannot believe that this little gem of knowledge was unknown to me for so long! John I appreciate your work here with the video, I’ve enjoyed all that I’ve managed to watch. Speaking of railroads, have you been to the Kansas Railroad Museum in Old Town in the player piano building? They’re only open Saturdays I believe. I haven’t made it yet myself, it’s on the “to do list” 😂. Take care!
I started riding Amtrak when I retired , it’s a great way to travel if time isn’t that important, it’s relaxing and no pressure travel I been from New York to Portland in a sleeper it’s a great way to see the county ❤
Goodness, what a bizarre story. You went to Kent state, that's nice. My wife used to (long time ago) sit in large cadillacs, with the top down and she (and other females) would ride for the parade, all the stuff done there. But, that was a long time ago. Very interesting video, be good, be safe !
John, what a fantastic story! I worked on ATSF 17 & 18 back in the 60's, but had never heard that story. The old TV clips were great. Your research is topnotch.
You co tinie to amaze me with your subject matter and video quality. I was looking for a continuation of your Iowa trip, but wasn't disappointed with this in any way. They were really cooking those rails for that time period!
Ha ha, thanks! I like to be the first person to ever have a video on a certain topic. I’m pretty sure this is the first time Kent and the Scott special have ever been connected publicly. I think my next Iowa video will be next Thursday 😊
@@TravelwithaWiseguy I will watch regardless come Sunday. But I will be here next Thursday with my Hawkeye gear on! Have a great weekend. Could be a good weather weekend for a road trip!
I was born/raised in Madison, OH, about an hour drive north of Kent and along the shores of Lake Erie. I've been in Kansas since 1993 and am still exploring the state, which NEVER gets old. I have a sister that lives in nearby Ravenna, OH. I go to Hutchinson periodically and will have to make a detour home someday to visit this historical site!!!
Very interesting about Kent. I visited Kent State (Ohio) in my early years, I was a teenager, I went with my boyfriend to visit his sister. Have you ever heard of East Liverpool Ohio? I attended high school there. They have a Kent State Campus downtown. Well tag along here is now 71 😎
I have a genealogy mystery in East Liverpool. I discovered that the only person who was an exact match to my brother’s paternal dna earliest ancestor was born there. (Mouthful) My earliest ancestor is in Highland County Ohio. I have not made all the connections yet. I hope to travel through Kansas, Missouri, Illinois & Ohio to do further research. Which is one of the reasons why I love these videos. Someday it will be me driving around taking in the sights.
Wow, I can't believe all that history happened in Kent and now there's nothing there. The town is completely gone, no remnant at all except for the tracks. All lost to history if not for you dredging it up again. I grew up in Kansas and I had no idea about any of this! It's too bad there is absolutely nothing left of the town, not a foundation, not an old shack, not a plaque commemorating the event, nothing! Just a nondescript set of tracks.
What a story! I was thinking they could have made money selling tickets to passengers for this historic run, but passengers may have slowed them down. Wondering what happened to Scott and his "gold mine". Enjoyed this one!❤ Stay safe and GOD bless
I think you’re right they were trying to keep it as light as possible! Scott was a wild guy - lots of stories about him online. What happened after this is even more interesting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_E._Scott
Thanks for another ghost town installment! The Cyclopedia of Kansas-1912 (available online) called Kent a "hamlet" with rural mail out of Hutch by that time. Valley Township map shows Dist. 94 schoolhouse was in the clump of trees just south of the tracks on the east side of Kent Road. The map shows a side track almost a mile long on the north side with a depot. Kansas Corporation Commission records say the station at Kent closed in 1907. The siding remained and was called Solvay by the Santa Fe until it was removed in 1957. The Kansas Historical Society has a photo online taken in 1931of a Santa Fe section house at Solvay built in 1882 (to house RR workers). The one house currently there does not match this unfortunately. I found the Arkansas Valley Interurban went through here, too. It ran towards Newton right alongside the Santa Fe on the south side 1915 until 1940. Kent was listed on tickets in the early days, maybe a simple little shelter at the road intersection
Very interesting. I can remeber the old steam engine.....with the black smoke billowing out of the smoke stack. On anoter subject. There is a ghost town near Wichita that you might check out. It is Millerton, Kansas, It is located about five miles SW of Clearwater. There are still a couple of houses there and an old grain elevator.
Think there may have been a whole town of people in the middle of that empty field to watch that train. Crazy that it's all gone and nothing is left except the tracks@@TravelwithaWiseguy
Everyone likes a "good" story. Thanks for sharing with us.
Thank you 😊
What a Cool 😎 history lesson. That was "gitten-er done!" back in the day.
Thumbs up 👍
Some fascinating times, indeed! Amazing to think of the things that people thought of, and set out to do!
A hustler really got them hustling. great video John. love all the old included tv black and white inserts.
Thanks! There’s a whole episode about Death Valley Scotty on TH-cam if you’re interested in more!
You told that great. Looking forward to the next video
Thanks 👍 much appreciated!

WHERE WAS HE BASED AT, AND WHAT WAS HIS JOB ??
Such an interesting story! Love those old trains! Thanks for giving us the history here!
Glad you enjoyed it! Fun little tidbit to find!
An interesting part of history. Thanks for bringing to us.

Thank you for a good story. You always find good things.
Thanks! Glad you found it interesting too 😊
Good show as usual 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome story! At the speeds that train was moving(at that time in history) I'm surprised it didn't derail. Thanks for sharing.
Good point! I’m sure they were cutting it close!
Interesting video thanks for sharing always learn something from your videos. ❤
So nice of you! Thanks!
Very interesting and well done. Great video, thanks!
Many thanks!
Great story ❤
I thought it was kind of interesting and quirky - thanks!
Great story! I might stop by Scotty’s Castle over Thanksgiving. I’ve been meaning to visit for a while and you inspired me to take a side trip.
I’ve heard it has been closed so make sure before you go! I’d love to visit too!

I had never heard about it until this summer and spent an entire night going down this rabbit hole 😂😂 yes I’ve been there and it’s really great!
Passenger trains should make a comeback in America.
I agree, Amtrak is not helping our transportation problem.

What a thing to learn in a place like that!
I thought so! 😊
Great human interest story. A little bit of history worth mentioning.

What a fascinating story! Prior to seeing this video, I had never heard of Scott or the Scott Special. What an amazing character.
He also lived in a castle in California or Nevada somewhere that is now a tourist attraction. Interesting character!

Yes I remember East Liverpool vaguely. I coached at Kent State so I was all over those areas too. Always enjoyed my time in NE Ohio!

nothing like ghost towns the buildings and people may be gone but only if the land could talk!
Absolutely!
Thanks for the story.
You bet!
I've been to Scotty's Castle a few times, but never knew about the train. Scotty was a character, no doubt.
I would love to go there! I heard it might be closed now 🤷🏼♂️
@TravelwithaWiseguy I just looked, Scotty's is closed until "late 2025"
Flood damage in DVNP was no joke.
Dang that’s too bad
Hutchinson changes its name to "Smallville" in honor of being Superman's hometown, so the Kent part is very fitting...
Haha nice!
the Southwest Chief takes that same route even through what was Kent?
I believe so!
Yes one way each direction every night
good to know it .

Cool History ,
Long train running 😊
😊
Wish I knew what happened to Kent. What led to its downfall
I tried really hard to find out. I even emailed the Reno County historical society and got no response. I’d love to know!
