      Been watching and loving sumo since 2016. I am 76 and my sumo buddy was 65. We first saw a vid of an interview with Yokazuna HAKUHO. We were intrigued; started watching videos on TH-cam and NHK World TV's GRAND SUMO HIGHLIGHTS during tournaments. We were instantly hooked (as are most people who are exposed to this great sport).
      Sumo has so many levels of interest past the wrestling: spiritual ceremonies, traditions of the different clothing, 82 wrestling techniques, the new names rikishi get and the whole history of sumo which is ancient.
      Sumo naturally becomes an addiction. Enjoy the journey.

      A small warning, the majority of sumo is boring tradition and long winded talks, a match can take dozens of minutes to start. Most of what we see on tv is purely highlights and severely trimmed down. Basically 90% of watching sumo is sitting there and waiting for matches.
      Edit: not to say the tradition isn’t interesting but watching it over and over gets old, and it gets old quick.

    Fascinating sport and cultural tradition. Sumos are athletes more like skilled strategists than just relying on brute force or strength. They must be disciplined and mindful of their art and skill. All honorable and respectful of the discipline. Amazing.

    Some years ago, there was a official sumo basho in Vancouver, all the top rishi were there, including Akebono. Everything was just as would have been done in Japan, including the proper clay, straw and other materials, all flown in in advance. I attended the first day, and it was packed with Japanese flown in on charter flights just for the occasion, there was no English spoken and virtually no English signs... As you approached the venue, there were all sorts of flags flying and the sound of the particular drum to call in the crowds on the tannoy... The whole day was spectacular and completely immersive in Japanese culture.... Amazing

      @@jlim003 When did I say leave Sumo to the Japanese?... The most successful sumo of all time is Mongolian not Japanese, no one stopped him from doing that. There is also no one stopping an organisation from outside Japan setting up a professional Sumo League, but no body does because they don't want to. You can't expect Japanese Sumo to change their hundreds of years of tradition to make it more accessible to foreigners, why should they? If people outside of Japan really cared enough about professional Sumo for everyone they would set up their own bashos, but they don't because there isn't enough interest. There is still Sumo outside of Japan though, there are championships and open tournaments all the time. But no one gets paid professionally because not enough people watch it... its simple economics. Its not up to Japan to do anything about this, why should they care.

    • @tomrl6674
      @tomrl6674 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@jlim003 There are countless other sports that are practiced in national leagues that heavily restrict foreign entry, because they are national leagues. The ones that are popular enough outside of those countries have leagues in many other countries too along with international competition. Professional Japanese Sumo is not a international competition, it is Japan's national sport.

      They have been in training since they were 15. In their sumo training they are taught how to get the body flexible and how to fall without injury.

      Some people here have commented that it's from the same composer as Narutos music. Maybe that will help to find it.

    chunko nabe? where can I get the recipes?

    • @joannaedwards6325
      @joannaedwards6325 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically chanko nabe is chicken stew. But it is usually more than broth, chicken and vegetables. It can contain scrambled egg, tofu chunks and many different kinds of veggies.
      Every sumo stable ( where the wrestlers train and live ) has their own recipe for chanko and it may vary depending on what vegetable is in season.
