Cayley, the jacket you've shown as an example of a blazer is actually a suit jacket. In other words, it was made to be worn with a matching pair of trousers. It's got flap pockets, is tapered in slightly at the waist, and has a chest pocket for a pocket square. A suit jacket worn without the matching trousers is considered inappropriate. A true men's blazer has patch pockets, a fuller cut, is made to be worn with mismatched trousers (or jeans) and is often navy blue with gold buttons (but can be other colors). It can have a chest pocket but often does not. It is usually lighter weight than a suit jacket because it has less tailoring. A sport coat is a more heavyweight blazer in a plaid, tweed, houndstooth or other sporty or nubby weave. All of these can be single- or double-breasted.
I often wonder how important the exact terminology is because the average person doesn't know all this info and will usually search general terms. I usually put all the key words in there even if they aren't exact for this reason. Wondering what everyone else's thoughts are??
My method for searching through them is to lift the sleeve and examine the buttons and material by feel. I'm looking for a few things here: 1. Whether the buttons actually undo (referred to as surgeon's cuffs), it's usually the sign of a high quality jacket as most manufacturers can't bother to take the extra effort to make them unbutton. 2. Quality and weight of the material - I'm looking for wool, and blends with cashmere, silk, or linen and avoiding polyester blends. Look out for Mohair blends as these can have good resale value - James Bond himself can often be seen wearing Mohair suits. 3. Gold buttons. Gold buttons can sometimes signify a high quality blazer and give me a reason to look for the brand etc. (They can also be cheap rubbish, but it is worth checking). Things to look out for....: 1. Dry cleaning tags - bingo, this item has been dry cleaned. It can also signify that the previous owner looked after it, and considered it worth the cost of dry cleaning. 2. Tailor made. You might think a suit made specifically to fit the person who bought it would not resell well, but so long as you get the measurements right in your description, these often sell better than off the rack sizes. 3. Holes - they often are worn just once and sit in wardrobes unchecked and become the victim of moths. 4. Lining dropping below pockets/hem. This can signify the item has been machine washed and shrunk. 5. Anything Harris tweed, if can pick up cheap enough, always sell very fast. 6. High quality evening jackets/tuxedos seem to do particularly well.
Caylee, You are so helpful! Thank you for your videos and for sharing information that you’ve learned over the years with us. God Bless you with health, happiness and abundance
I found money in a men's blazer twice. One time was $40 and the other was $60! I think it's because they have hidden pockets that thrifts don't check. I'd love to see another video talking more about men's blazers. Great video, thank you!
@@edieandmemiller4649 same here! Just last week I picked up a blazer and felt something papery in the pocket. It has one of those stitched closed pockets that had only partly been unstitched. I squeezed my fingers in expecting, if it was money, to just be a few bucks. It was 3 $20 bills. Woohoo! It covered my thrift haul for that trip and I had 11 bucks to spare. 😜
Thank you so much, this came at the perfect time. I just started reselling as a hobby. I bought a beautiful wool and cashmere blazer online for 5 euro last week, I wanted to wear it myself. When it arrived I found the Loro Piana label in the blazer, I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked it up. I'm a little overwhelmed, I love this blazer so much, it feels amazing and fits me perfectly. But I'm afraid to ruin it. On the other hand, I want to see how much I can sell it for, but I don't know how to price it. I can't find this exact blazer anywhere. It has 3 buttons, so maybe it's a vintage piece.
I love selling men’s blazers. If you definitely don’t price them right and/or charge absurd shipping, they will sit. I have found the pattern and color definitely can improve or slow the STr. Some keywords that I have found really juice my blazer sales are tweed, patch pockets, vintage, peak lapel, and surgeons cuff. Except maybe vintage, these other keywords can get your item sold quickly and for good money usually. I tend to play in the smaller size spectrum 38-46.
Thank you for sharing some key words! I remember one time I really went into the history of a suit's label (it was a Scottish wool brand of some sort). It was actually really fun and I think that help sell it because it sold overnight! All the suits are handmade at an old-fashioned mill on the island and they support local farmers. They pick the way you do wool that's more complicated- it's a slower process, but makes the wool feel more soft and not itchy (from what I gathered in my non-wool expert mind). They have not changed their practices for well over 100 years and refuse to join big corporations and only will do family-run or community-run.
Thanks for making this video. I am one of those resellers who mostly passes up jackets and blazers. I also appreciated the comment section too. I think I need to start going through this section again when out sourcing.
Thanks for the info! I would listen to 20 more minutes of it...hahaha! I love learning more in-depth information on specific categories like this! Thank you!
When I started listing blazers, suits, etc the hustle couple on you tube taught me how to do all the measurements. Its a lot of learning in this category in general but worth it. Thankyou for all you do and all your videos!!
I feel like blazers are usually long tail, take up more space in storage, and can cost a lot to ship. Also- lots of tiny moth holes to watch out for. All of those reasons, plus stained underarms keep me away from Blazers (most of the time).
I love jackets, suits, and blazers. When I worked retail my area was men's wear and I had to learn how to fit for suits and tuxedo. I loved it and had since I was a kids seeing how the ladies in my family sewed and made clothing and did alterations.
A tip on finding size and material tags is to look inside the men's hidden chest pocket. A label is often sewn there with the size and information you need.
This is amazing timing! I just picked up two LRL men’s blazers with adorable fox lining. Keep up the great work. I love watching your channel and will check out your what not show.
Cayley, you have provided so much invaluable information for beginners to seasoned sellers. I can't tell you how much I've learned from you! Rooting for your continued success! I watch your videos while I make my drafts, list, all that stuff and every time I go back to the bins I have more knowledge. I do too just went right past the blazers as everyone else at the bins here - but now I think I'll have to do more looking. I don't know anything about men's blazers either so I had no idea how to even begin listing them. Now I have no excuse to not try at least one after your video!
I just found a Peter Millar Loro Piana blazer with a Linen/silk/wool blend. I hadn’t heard of Loro Piana before but found it to be a BOLO so I definitely snatched it up. I have it ready to list but noticed stains on one sleeve cuff. How do you handle stains on the dry clean only fabric of blazers?
I try not to pick up things that need work that are dry clean only. I have at times tried gently spot cleaning the area with cold water and detergent but you never know how to fabric could reacr.
Perfect timing. I listed a VTG union made (had the union tag in an inner pocket),100% linen Brooks Brothers sport coat today that I got at GW last week for $4.89. 😂
this is my favorite category after outerwear and lingerie. So much good stuff. Got lucky today with a wool, silk and linen blend Brooks brothers blazer with Loro Piana fabric.
I just pushed through drafting all the suit jackets/sport coats I've been stock piling. I waited 2 long 2 list last year and most have not sold that I had listed. I follow the same tips you listed in your videos so if they don't sell this year then I'm clearly doing something wrong
Great info! I wonder about storing and shipping them. I put things in bags and stick on a shelf, don't have "hanging room". Won't they be a wrinkle mess after a bit of time? Ship in bag or box or.....?
Another great men’s brand to flip fast is Bonobos! Bought about 6 at a church sale for $2 apiece and sold all but one within a few weeks between $60 and $80

It actually can be a sports coat, blazers usually have metal buttons. The terminology is important

What is the best and most economical way to package a suit coat?

Men's Blazers, Sports Coat and Suit Jacket. I think for men using Sports Coat sells better than saying men's blazers.
I don’t like selling clothing I can’t wash first and I’m not going to spend cash on dry cleaning, so anything like that is not for me.
