45 years ago, I worked 112 countries with .2 watts CW on 20 meters with a backyard vertical using a Heathkit "FleaPower" (anyone else remember building those kits?) rig and 102 countries (Legal limit at the time) on 15 meters on it with the same Hi-Gain 1/4 wave vertical before the shitty of Tulsa made me remove my antenna for zoning ordinances. Now it's considered a feat to work 50 countries with 5 watts SSB or digital and a 16 element boom up 40+ meters on a mountain!!! I worked 163 countries with a tube 40 meter .05 watt CW rig and blew people's ears off with a long wire during the 1990 period of the dead Sun. My "secret"; listen until the kilowatts shut-down and have the band in peace!
Hi Roly… ah, we’ve got to love 20 metres! For mine, it’s the real magic band. Regardless of solar cycle it’s open to somewhere for at least a couple of hours per day… unlike the ‘other’ magic band which is/can be dead for months at a time! You’re having fun there! Cheers, & 73. Peter, VK3ACZ
hi Roly, wondering if you can shed some light, callum at dx commander said you might know some people at icom. ive just bought my first radio and ive got it from a fella in japan, its a JDM version, ive bought it and its already on its way. seller tells me you cant change the display to English but the manuals all say you can. ive emailed just about everyone to try find out anything on these Japanese domestic versions. ive hit a dead end. hoping you could maybe ask someone that would know more about this version? thanks Graeme
